Thermal roof surveys for Tidworth homes and businesses

What we look for on each type of roof

Felt and asphalt flat roofs

Water under felt or asphalt can stay hidden for years. Thermal imaging helps suggest where it is, given suitable conditions on the day.

Loft insulation

Loft insulation is easily disturbed when people store things or run cables. The camera can show where it no longer covers the ceiling.

Thermal roof survey in Tidworth: what you get

Thermal imaging is part of our Premium Survey, which starts from £400. It also includes a drone inspection where it applies, a structural analysis and a same-day report. An in-person consultation and a 12-month follow-up are included too. To book, just ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email with the address and what you’ve noticed. Larger commercial roofs are quoted for their size. We’re often asked to look into wet insulation beneath the membrane and damp that repairs haven’t cured, on flat roofs, pitched roof slopes and commercial roofs.

Older cottages and houses around Tidworth may have little insulation, and some have extensions with their own roofs. Thermal patterns and close-up photos together give a fuller picture of the roof. Anything that looks like moisture is checked with a meter. Results depend on the weather, so the visit is planned around the forecast.

We keep jargon out of it: where something needs attention, it says so plainly, and where it can wait, that is said too.

Questions from Tidworth

Is Tidworth within the area you cover?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. Our area covers London and South East England. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when booking.

Do you cover Tidworth?

Yes, Tidworth is one of the places we work. The survey and report are the same in Tidworth as anywhere else, and visits run on weekdays and weekends.

How soon will I get the report?

Basic reports arrive within 48 hours, Standard reports in 24–48 hours and Premium reports on the same day. All of them come by email.

Is this a RICS survey?

No. Our survey is a roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey of the whole building. It focuses on the roof, so it sits alongside a building survey rather than replacing it.

Can a thermal camera see water?

Thermal imaging shows temperature rather than water. Wet insulation holds heat longer than dry, so it can stand out, but we check each finding with moisture readings.

Do you climb onto every roof?

Only where it’s safe to do so. We inspect whatever is safely visible: from ground level, from windows and vantage points, from the loft space, from the roof itself where safe and by drone where applicable. Anything we cannot see is noted in the report.

How long have you been surveying roofs?

We have more than 20 years’ experience and have completed over 5,000 surveys.

What you can safely check yourself

Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.

A DIY look is useful, but it is not a survey. You will not see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from ground level.

Airspace, weather and Tidworth roofs

If your home is older, it’s worth knowing whether it is listed or in a conservation area before planning roof work. Listed building consent covers changes to a listed building’s special interest, and an Article 4 direction can bring extra controls in a conservation area. Thatch survives on some older buildings in Hampshire’s villages. Across the South East, older homes tend to have slate or clay tiles, and many later ones concrete tiles. A drone or thermal camera adds most on the steep, tall and hidden parts of roofs like these.

The streets around a church such as Church of the Holy Trinity are frequently among the oldest in a place, and if your house is among the older ones nearby, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.

Signs you need a thermal roof survey in Tidworth

Not every roof problem shows on the surface. Wet insulation, gaps in insulation and heat loss are frequently invisible from outside. A thermal camera adds another way of finding them.

Here are some of the things we see often:

  • Wet areas near outlets and upstands
  • Damp around chimneys and parapets
  • Gaps in loft insulation
  • Leaks that are hard to trace

Take a building like The Wellington Academy: thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof.

What to expect from a roof survey

Why get it checked now?

Heat lost through a roof costs money every winter. Thermal images can show where insulation is missing or has slipped, so improvements can go where they’re needed. Tradespeople may need to travel further to a smaller place like Tidworth, so it helps to plan roof work rather than call someone out in a hurry. A survey gives you that notice.

All our prices include VAT. Prices start from £400, including VAT. We confirm the price for your roof before booking.

Tips that help

Getting the most from a thermal roof survey starts before we arrive and carries on afterwards. Tips:

  • Don’t climb onto the roof to look for leaks yourself
  • Photograph damp patches with the date
  • Remember the conditions on the day affect the results
  • Clear a path to the loft hatch before we arrive

If you’re buying, the report gives you specific points to raise with the seller or agent. What you do with it is up to you, whether that is asking for work or discussing the price.

Clear outlets and gutters regularly, so water does not sit on the roof. The less water sits, the less can find its way beneath.

The survey, step by step

A survey visit follows a simple order: we listen to what’s been worrying you, inspect the roof from every safe viewpoint, take photos as we go and record our findings for the written report. Most visits take between one and two hours for a house, or half a day or so for a commercial building. With a bit of garden around a house, as there often is around Tidworth, the roof can be viewed from several angles. Mention any side of the property we cannot get to. The loft, where there is safe access, completes the picture.

  1. First we discuss the roof, any damp and the forecast for the visit.
  2. We look over the roof from wherever it is safe.
  3. Thermal images are taken across the roof and, where there’s safe access, in the loft.
  4. We take moisture readings where the images suggest a problem.
  5. Each image is set beside a normal photo and explained in the report.

Getting ready for the survey

  • Leave a clear route to the loft
  • If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building
  • If you are buying, let the agent know when we’re coming
