Thermal roof surveys near Picket Piece

Can I check my roof myself?

Your own check is a good start, but it is not a survey. From the ground, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight, and those are details a survey looks at closely.

Look up at the roof after a storm, from ground level: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.

Thermal roof survey in Picket Piece: what you get

Our Premium Survey, from £400, brings together a full roof inspection and thermal imaging. You also get a drone inspection where applicable, structural analysis and a report on the same day. There is an in-person consultation as well, plus a follow-up 12 months later. To book, just call 07833 053749 or drop us an email with the address and what you’ve noticed. For big commercial roofs, we quote on size and access. If you’ve noticed moisture around outlets and upstands and stains that keep coming back, we can find out what’s behind it.

In smaller places like Picket Piece, many homes are bungalows and houses with roofs you can partly see from the ground. Chimney tops, valleys and rear slopes are where close-up or thermal images help most. The forecast decides the day, as calm, dry conditions suit both. Even so, a close-up image often shows wear on ridges and flashings that a view from ground level misses.

Findings are set out part by part, from the main slopes down to the gutters and outlets. You will see the good as well as the bad.

What a thermal roof survey looks like in Picket Piece

If the drone is used for your survey, the flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. Thatch survives on some older buildings in Hampshire’s villages. Slate and clay tile are the usual coverings on older South East houses, with concrete tiles on many later estates. A drone or thermal camera adds most on the steep, tall and hidden parts of roofs like these.

Practical tips

Getting the most from a thermal roof survey starts before we arrive and carries on afterwards. Some tips:

  • Keep outlets and gutters clear to stop water sitting
  • Heat the home normally on the days before
  • Check from the ground or a window, never by climbing
  • Remember the conditions on the day affect the results

Many people send the report to roofers, who can then quote for the areas shown. Each thermal image is matched to a normal photo, so the areas are easy to locate.

Deal with small splits and lifted seams promptly. Once water gets under a membrane, it can travel far before it appears inside.

FAQs for Picket Piece

Do you cover Picket Piece?

Yes. We survey roofs across London and South East England, and Picket Piece is part of that. Just call 07833 053749 or send us an email and let us know about the property.

Is there anything to prepare before you come to Picket Piece?

Very little. Unlock side gates, keep pets in another room and dig out any invoices from past roof work.

Can you use a thermal camera on a sloping roof?

On pitched roofs, the camera can point to heat loss and some damp patterns. Our report is clear about what can be read from them, and we check them with a visual inspection and moisture readings.

I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?

Yes, as long as access is agreed. The roof of a block or converted house is often shared, so we need permission from the building owner or managing agent. We can only inspect what we’re given access to.

Will you go up on the roof?

Only when it’s safe. Safe viewpoints, the roof space and a drone where it applies cover most of what’s needed, and anything out of sight is recorded in the report.

Do you survey on Saturdays and Sundays?

Surveys run on any day of the week. To find a day that suits you, ring 07833 053749 or email us.

Does the report include photographs?

Yes. Photographs are taken throughout the survey, and they go into the written report alongside our recommendations.

What affects the price in Picket Piece

Several things affect the price of a survey:

  • How many separate roofs there are, such as extensions, dormers and garages
  • Whether it is a home or a commercial building
  • Whether you choose the Basic, Standard or Premium Survey
  • How tall the building is and how easy the roof is to see

One thing that affects the price is the package: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 or Premium from £400, all inc. VAT. Size, height and access can affect the price too.

What we need to know

If you can, have these to hand when you contact us:

  • The property’s address and postcode
  • The style of property, from a terrace to a block
  • What’s prompted the survey
  • Any marks or damp showing indoors

Photos help, if you have them. Take them safely from ground level or a window, and please do not climb up for a closer look. To send them or to book, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form.

How the survey works

We don’t take risks to get a closer look. Everything that can be seen safely is inspected, and anything we cannot see is noted in the report. The survey normally takes about one to two hours for most homes, plus time to check any thermal findings with moisture readings. Homes around Picket Piece often have gardens on more than one side, which gives us room to step back and see the roof. Let us know if any side is fenced off or hard to reach. Inside, the loft is checked where it can be reached safely.

  1. We go through the roof, the problem and the weather expected on the day.
  2. We look over the roof from wherever it is safe.
  3. We take thermal images of the roof and of the loft where we can reach it.
  4. We take moisture readings where the images suggest a problem.
  5. Each image is set beside a normal photo and explained in the report.

Before we arrive

  • Note where any stains or damp appear
  • If it isn’t your property yet, arrange access through the agent
  • Dig out any old roof reports or invoices

Advice

Honest limits

Without opening up the roof, some things stay hidden, and that sets some limits:

  • Seeing water directly, as the camera shows temperature, not moisture
  • A formal energy assessment
  • Structural calculations, which need a structural engineer

If you are not sure which survey you need, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we will give you a straight answer before booking. What a survey covers and does not.

Roof types and parts we check

  • Insulated roof spaces
  • Commercial roofs
  • Flat roofs
  • Pitched roof slopes
  • Loft conversions
  • Ceilings below the roof

Signs you need a thermal roof survey in Picket Piece

Once a leak has been fixed, people frequently ask whether the roof is still wet. Thermal images and moisture readings can suggest whether moisture is still trapped when the conditions on the day are suitable.

We’re often asked to look at:

  • Water that travels before it shows
  • Cold areas below the roof
  • Damp around chimneys and parapets
  • Areas of a flat roof that may hold water

Take a building like Pilgrims' Cross CofE Aided Primary School: a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit.

Questions to ask before booking

  • How they plan to inspect the roof safely
  • Which limits apply to the survey
  • Do they have a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID for drone work?
  • Is there a chance to talk the report through?
