Independent thermal roof surveys in Fyfield

Thermal roof survey in Fyfield

Our thermal survey records how the surface temperature varies across your roof. The patterns can suggest wet insulation, gaps in insulation or places where heat is getting out. It is important to know that the camera shows temperature, not water, so findings are checked with moisture readings. It comes as part of our Premium Survey, from £400. Conditions on the day affect the results, and the report explains how. Typical surveys look at leaks that are hard to trace and cold spots on ceilings under the roof, on loft conversions, pitched roof slopes and commercial roofs.

Somewhere as small as Fyfield, older roofs are frequently steep and partly hidden by trees or outbuildings. Close-up drone photos and thermal images help show what can’t be reached safely. Weather and airspace are checked ahead of the visit. Older roofs with steep slopes and tall chimneys are where the extra view helps most.

The Standard Survey adds moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey goes further, with thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

DIY checks: what’s safe

If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.

What you can’t do safely is get up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery, and a fall can be serious. That part is for a survey.

What we do, step by step

After the inspection, everything we found is written up as a written report with photographs, sent to you by email. On timing, most surveys take an hour or two for a house, and longer for a large or complex roof. Older roofs in small places like Fyfield can have low, tight loft spaces, so tell us about the loft hatch and any ladder. Only areas that can be reached safely are inspected.

  1. First we discuss the roof, any damp and the forecast for the visit.
  2. The roof is inspected visually from safe positions.
  3. We take thermal images of the roof and of the loft where we can reach it.
  4. We take moisture readings where the images suggest a problem.
  5. Each image is set beside a normal photo and explained in the report.

Getting ready for the survey

  • Check pets are kept safely away
  • For flats, check roof access has been agreed
  • Leave side gates unlocked

Advice

What we can’t see

Our findings are based on what we can see safely on the day, so some things are outside what a survey can do:

  • Confirming water without moisture readings
  • The condition of timbers we cannot see
  • Reliable images in rain, strong wind or on a wet roof surface

If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we will point you to the right survey. The full list of what we check.

For landlords and managing agents

If you own several properties, surveys can be booked for more than one address. To discuss a number of properties, phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the addresses.

For a freeholder or residents’ company, a roof report is a sound basis for a maintenance plan, putting the urgent items at the top.

Before and after the survey

Some practical points come up on survey after survey. They’re worth knowing whatever the roof:

  • Move stored items away from the loft hatch
  • Clear leaves from outlets and gutters each autumn
  • Check from the ground or a window, never by climbing
  • Do not switch the heating off ahead of the visit

You also get an in-person consultation with a Premium Survey, so you can go through the images with us. A follow-up 12 months later is included as well.

Keep outlets and gutters clear so water drains off the roof quickly. Less standing water means less chance of it getting under the covering.

Common questions in Fyfield

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Fyfield?

Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it is worth checking before planning any.

Is Fyfield within the area you cover?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We cover the whole of London and South East England. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route as you book.

What can thermal imaging tell me about my roof?

A thermal camera shows differences in surface temperature. Those patterns can point to trapped moisture, missing insulation or heat loss. We check what it shows with moisture readings.

Is this a RICS survey?

No. It is a specialist roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 building survey. It focuses on the roof and can sit alongside a RICS survey.

Do you survey roofs on blocks of flats?

Yes, once whoever controls the roof agrees access. On a shared roof we can only inspect the parts we are allowed to reach, and the report makes that clear.

How long will you be at the property?

Most surveys take roughly 1–2 hours at most homes, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. We’ll confirm the timing when booking.

Do you carry out surveys on Saturdays and Sundays?

Visits run seven days a week in the daytime, which suits people who work during the week. Let us know your preferred days when booking.

Thermal roof surveys around Fyfield

If the drone is used for your survey, the flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. Listing and conservation areas can both shape what roof work is allowed on an older home. The council is the place to check, along with Historic England’s list, before anyone quotes for re-roofing.

In and around Fyfield, as anywhere, a roof is easiest to deal with when its problems are found early. If you own one of the older houses in the streets near Church of St Nicholas, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.

Fyfield is about 4 miles west of Andover, in Hampshire. In Fyfield, as across Hampshire, every roof gets the same careful survey. Fyfield is one of the places in Hampshire we cover. We also survey roofs in Southampton.

We also cover Mullenspond (1 mile south-east), Thruxton (1 mile south), East Cholderton (1 mile south), Weyhill (1 mile east) and Appleshaw (2 miles north-east). Why act early in Fyfield

Trapped water can harm decks, timbers and ceilings the longer it stays. Surveying sooner gives you more choice about what to do. Older and listed buildings around Fyfield may need consent and matching materials for repairs, so leaving a defect until it is urgent leaves less time to plan.

A Basic Survey starts from £150, inc. VAT. Standard is from £250 and Premium from £400, both with VAT included. You’ll know the price for the job before booking.
