About our chimney survey in Hatchet Green
A chimney survey looks at the stack and everything around it: the pots and cowls, the flaunching on top, the pointing, the brickwork and the flashings where it meets the roof. We also look for damp on chimney breasts and in the loft where there is safe access. The findings come in a written report with photos and recommendations. It suits a single stack on a house as well as several on a larger building. Common reasons to book are loose, cracked or missing pots and signs that a stack is leaning, on chimney breasts, lead flashings and chimney pots and cowls.
In a village or hamlet like Hatchet Green, older cottages and farmhouses frequently sit alongside barns, outbuildings and a few newer houses. Older roofs may be clay tile, slate, stone or thatch, frequently with chimneys that have stood a long time. Each needs checking in its own way, and thatch is a specialist material we report on as far as it can be seen. Chimneys and lead flashings on old roofs frequently need the most attention.
Where we can’t see part of the chimney stack, the report says so. You’ll know exactly what was inspected and what wasn’t.

How the survey changes by roof type
Chimney breasts and the loft
Where a breast has been taken out, we check what supports the stack. Confirming the support is a job for a structural engineer.
Brick stacks
Many older stacks were built with lime mortar. We note where repairs should match the original mortar.
The survey, step by step
On the day, we start by asking what you’ve noticed and what you’d like to know. After that, we look at everything we can see safely, from the ground, from windows, in the loft space and by drone where applicable. The survey usually takes roughly 1–2 hours at most homes, while a commercial roof takes nearer three to four hours. Rural addresses near Hatchet Green can be hard to find from a postcode alone, so a few directions, or a note of a nearby landmark, help us arrive on time. The visit itself is the same as anywhere else.
- We go through the chimneys, any damp and any work done on them.
- Each stack is inspected from safe positions outside.
- Pots, cowls, flaunching, pointing and flashings are checked and photographed.
- Inside, the chimney breasts and the loft are checked for damp where there’s access.
- The report, with photographs and recommendations, is emailed to you.
Getting ready for the survey
- Leave side gates unlocked
- Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at
- If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building

Common questions in Hatchet Green
Is my home in Hatchet Green listed or in a conservation area?
Your council is the best source, with Historic England’s list for listed buildings. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.
Is Hatchet Green in the area you cover?
We do. The survey and report are the same in Hatchet Green as anywhere else, and visits run on weekdays and weekends.
How many surveys have you done?
We have more than 20 years’ experience and have carried out more than 5,000 surveys.
Does the report include photos?
Yes. The report includes photographs of what we found.
Do you carry professional indemnity insurance?
Our surveys are covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance. If you need details for a managing agent or a building owner, just ask.
How long is the visit?
Expect it to take about one to two hours for most homes, a little longer where there are several stacks. The written report follows by email.
Do you inspect shared chimneys?
Yes. Shared stacks are common on terraced and semi-detached houses. We record the stack as far as we can see it and flag anything on the neighbour’s side.
Do you need a chimney survey in Hatchet Green?
Stacks that were used for open fires for many years can weaken from the inside. Mortar can deteriorate unevenly from flue gases and moisture, which is one reason stacks start to lean.
A survey can pick up problems such as:
- A stack that appears to lean
- Flaunching that has broken away
- Disused chimneys trapping moisture
- Pots or cowls that look unsafe
Anyone responsible for a site like Hale Primary School will know that its roofs, gutters and any chimneys need the same checks as a house’s, just on a bigger scale.
Choosing a roof surveyor

- Are they insured for the work?

What a chimney survey looks like in Hatchet Green
With Breamore House about 2.6 miles west, Hatchet Green sits in an area with a long building history. If you own one of the older houses, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material. Thatch survives on some older buildings in Hampshire’s villages. Across the South East, older homes tend to have slate or clay tiles, and many later ones concrete tiles. Whichever you have, the details that tend to fail before the covering itself get the closest look.
If your house is among the older ones in the streets near Church of St Mary, old fixings, lead flashings and tall chimneys are typical of older roofs.

Useful tips for Hatchet Green property owners
You do not need to be a roofer to help. What helps most:
- Look at the chimneys with binoculars after a storm
- Check that disused chimneys can still breathe
- Note any damp on chimney breasts and when it appears
- Leave close inspection to people with safe access
With a shared stack, the report can help when talking to next door. The photos show the problem and which side it’s on from the viewpoints we used.
Watch for damp or staining on chimney breasts. The sooner damp is spotted, the easier the cause is to find.
Leave it or get it looked at?
Loose pots and bricks on a stack are a safety concern. A survey picks them out so they can be made safe by a suitable contractor. For older village homes like those around Hatchet Green, the right replacement materials aren’t always easy to find quickly. That is one more reason to find defects before they become urgent.
