Independent thermal roof surveys in Hatchet Green

Thermal roof surveys for homes and businesses in Hatchet Green

A thermal survey can point to places where heat is escaping through the roof. Gaps in loft insulation and poorly insulated areas can stand out on the images. It works best when the building is heated and it’s colder outside. Our report points out what the images suggest and where to look more closely. We don’t give energy ratings or heat loss calculations. We survey loft conversions, insulated roof spaces and ceilings below the roof, and the problems we’re asked to look at most are gaps in loft insulation and wet insulation beneath the membrane.

Older buildings in small places like Hatchet Green may be listed or in a conservation area. Neither a drone survey nor a thermal survey involves any work on the roof, which suits a building where any change needs care, before anyone decides what work it needs. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, so check with the council first.

Where we cannot see part of the roof, the report says so. That way, it’s clear what was covered and what wasn’t, and what we’d suggest next.

For landlords and managing agents

We also survey roofs for businesses and commercial landlords. Bigger roofs take more time, and they’re priced for the size.

If you own several properties, you can book surveys for several addresses. To arrange surveys for several addresses, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the addresses.

Checking the roof from the ground

Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Water spilling over the edge can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.

Your own check is a good start, but it isn’t a survey. From the ground, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight, and those are details a survey looks at closely.

The survey, step by step

The visit has one job: to see as much of the roof as can safely be seen and record it clearly. Everything we note and photograph goes into the written report. The visit typically takes an hour or two for a house, rising to roughly 3–4 hours on a commercial building. Older roofs in small places like Hatchet Green can have low, tight loft spaces, so let us know about the loft hatch and any ladder. We only go where it’s safe.

  1. We go through the roof, the problem and the weather expected on the day.
  2. We look over the roof from wherever it’s safe.
  3. Thermal images are taken across the roof and, where there’s safe access, in the loft.
  4. Patterns that stand out are checked with moisture readings.
  5. Each image is set beside a normal photo and explained in the report.

Preparing for the visit

  • Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand
  • Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at
  • Let us know about parking before the day

What this survey can’t tell you

This is not a RICS building survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. It also has these limits:

  • The condition of timbers we can’t see
  • Insulation values or heat loss calculations
  • Whether the deck or roof structure is strong enough

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can call 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we will tell you before booking. The full list of what we check.

What we look at

  • Commercial roofs
  • Insulated roof spaces
  • Loft conversions
  • Ceilings below the roof
  • Pitched roof slopes
  • Flat roofs

Practical tips

Over many surveys, some simple habits stand out:

  • Move stored items away from the loft hatch
  • Check outlets after heavy rain
  • Photograph damp patches with the date
  • Let us know where and when you’ve seen damp or stains

The report explains the conditions on the day and how they affected the images. It helps you judge how firm each finding is.

Deal with small splits and lifted seams promptly. Once water gets under a membrane, it can travel far before it appears inside.

Hatchet Green: your questions answered

Is Hatchet Green within the area you cover?

Yes, Hatchet Green is on our map. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house.

Is my home in Hatchet Green listed or in a conservation area?

We cannot confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.

Is thermal imaging included in your surveys?

Our Premium Survey, from £400, includes thermal imaging. You also get an in-person consultation and a 12-month follow-up. Larger commercial roofs are quoted for their size.

What will the report tell me?

It explains what we saw, what it means and what we’d suggest, with photos throughout. Anything we couldn’t see safely is noted too, so you know exactly what was covered.

Is thermal imaging useful on pitched roofs?

It can show heat loss and some damp, but it has more limits there. Our report is clear about what can be read from them, and we check them with a visual inspection and moisture readings.

Is it a structural engineer’s report?

No. We note visible signs like sagging or deflection, but we do not carry out calculations or give an engineer’s opinion. Where an engineer is needed, we say so in the report.

What insurance do you have?

We hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance, for every survey we carry out.

Why get it checked now?

If a big flat roof may need replacing, knowing the wet areas first is useful. Thermal imaging, checked with moisture readings, gives a clearer picture before you spend. For older village homes like those around Hatchet Green, the right replacement materials are not always easy to find quickly. Spotting a problem early leaves room to find them.

Price depends partly on the package: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 or Premium from £400, all with VAT included. Size, height and access can affect the price too.

What you get with us

  • More than 20 years surveying roofs
  • Surveys seven days a week
  • Drones and thermal imaging where applicable
  • Over 5,000 surveys carried out

Flying and imaging in Hatchet Green

Some Hampshire villages still have thatched roofs. Across the South East, older homes tend to have slate or clay tiles, and many later ones concrete tiles. Many roofs like these can’t be judged properly from the pavement, and that is where a view from above or a thermal image earns its place. If the drone is used for your survey, the flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first.

Historic houses such as Breamore House, about 2.6 miles west, show how far back building around Hatchet Green goes. Aerial photos and thermal images let an old roof be checked without anyone disturbing it. For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Hale Primary School, a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it. For an older house near a landmark like Church of St Mary, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.
