How a storm damage roof report works in Lower Slackstead

Each roof is looked at from the safest viewpoints available: from the ground, from windows and higher points, from the loft space and from the roof where it is safe. We photograph and describe each area of damage. If part of the roof can’t be seen, the report says so. The report, with photos, is yours to pass to your insurer. If you’re worried about gaps where slates or tiles have gone and roofs hit by falling trees, a survey will tell you what’s going on, on chimney stacks, ridges and hips and flashings alike.

Many homes in small places like Lower Slackstead face open ground, where storms hit ridges, verges and chimneys hardest. Once water gets into older walls, it takes a long time to dry, which makes finding the cause quickly worthwhile. A record with photographs is useful if you need to show the damage to anyone else.

We write the report in plain English, so you don’t need to be a roofer to follow it. Photos show what each point refers to, and recommendations are put in order of urgency where relevant.

The survey, step by step

The visit typically starts outside and finishes in the loft: outside views come first, then the loft space if there’s safe access. All told, expect between one and two hours for most houses, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. Somewhere like Lower Slackstead needs a little journey planning: let us know about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. On the day, we inspect everything that’s safely in view, inside and out.

  1. We note the date of the storm and the damage you’ve seen.
  2. We look at the roof from wherever it is safe.
  3. Each area of damage is photographed and described.
  4. The report notes whether the damage fits a storm, older wear or both.
  5. We send you the report by email for your insurer.

Preparing for the visit

What a storm damage roof report looks like in Lower Slackstead

Historic houses like Mottisfont Abbey, about 4.3 miles west, show how far back building in the area around Lower Slackstead goes. Older homes in the wider area often have features worth a closer look, like lead valleys, tall stacks and roofs that have been patched over the years, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material. A number of Hampshire villages keep thatched roofs on their older buildings. Older houses in the South East often have slate or clay tile roofs, while many later estates have concrete tiles. Different coverings let water in at different points, which shapes where the search starts.

Before and after the survey

A survey works best with a little help from you, before and after. Some tips:

  • Photograph the damage safely from below
  • Read your policy wording on storm damage
  • Record any water damage in rooms and the loft
  • Keep a note of the date of the storm

If you’re unhappy with how your insurer handles the claim, you can complain to them first. After that, you may be able to take it to the Financial Ombudsman Service.

A well-maintained roof stands up to storms better. Have loose slates, tiles and flashings seen to promptly.

Honest limits

Some things can’t be seen without opening up the roof, so a survey has limits:

  • Areas we cannot see safely
  • Acting for you with the insurer
  • What your policy covers, which depends on its wording

If you are not sure which survey you need, call 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll give you a straight answer before you book. What a survey covers and doesn’t.

Your questions about storm damage roof reports in Lower Slackstead

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Lower Slackstead?

The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. It is worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.

Is Lower Slackstead in the area you cover?

Yes, Lower Slackstead is within the area we cover. Our area covers London and South East England. Just phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form and let us know about the property.

Is wear and tear covered by insurance?

Most policies do not cover wear and tear. Our report records storm damage and any older wear we see, so you know what the roof shows. How the policy applies is up to your insurer.

How experienced are you?

We have more than 20 years’ experience and have completed over 5,000 surveys.

Will you check the loft?

If there’s a loft and safe access to it, yes. The roof space can show things the outside cannot, like damp timbers, staining or daylight.

How are storm damage reports priced?

Prices start from £150, including VAT. Bigger roofs are quoted on size and access. Repair costs are not included, so ask a roofer to quote.

Is this an asbestos survey?

No. Asbestos surveys and testing aren’t part of what we do. We flag materials that could contain asbestos, such as cement sheets or soffits on pre-2000 buildings.

How the survey changes by roof type

Slate roofs

Natural slate can last 100 years or more, but the nails frequently fail first. We look at whether slipped slates suggest storm damage, older wear or both.

Lead flashings

Old flashings that were already loose can give way in a storm. We record what looks recent and what looks older.

Common roof problems in Lower Slackstead

Landlords and building managers often need a written record after a storm. The report can be shared with owners, tenants or insurers.

Typical things we’re asked to look at include:

  • Stains appearing after strong winds
  • Slates and tiles blown off the roof
  • Holes or cracks caused by debris
  • Loose or torn flashings

The streets around a church like Church of All Saints are often among the oldest in a place, and if your house is among the older ones nearby, lead flashings, valleys and old chimneys are typical places for water to get in.
