How a storm damage roof report works in Nately Scures
Each roof is looked at from the safest viewpoints available: the ground, windows and vantage points, the loft where there’s access, and the roof itself where that is safe. Every area of damage is photographed and described. We note any part we couldn’t see. You get a written report with photos to give to your insurer. We survey slate and tile slopes, chimney stacks and ridges and hips, and common reasons people get in touch are damaged gutters and fascias and flat roof edges peeled back.
Many homes in small places like Nately Scures face open ground, so storms hit ridges, verges and chimneys hard. Damp in old stone, brick or timber walls is slow to dry out, so it pays to find the cause quickly. A record with photos is useful if you need to show the damage to anyone else.
The report works through the roof section by section, from the coverings down to the gutters, each with a short note and a photo. You will see the good as well as the bad.

Questions from Nately Scures
Is Nately Scures in the area you cover?
We do. Every survey there gets the same written report with photographs.
How do I find out if my home in Nately Scures is listed?
Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it is worth checking before planning any.
How experienced are you?
Over 5,000 surveys so far, across 20+ years of surveying roofs.
Do you act for me with my insurer?
No. We write an independent report, and you decide how to use it. The insurer may send a loss adjuster of its own.
Which days do you carry out surveys?
We survey seven days a week: Monday to Friday, Saturdays and Sundays. Tell us which days suit you when you book.
Do you use drones?
Where it helps and it’s safe, yes. Flights depend on the weather on the day and airspace rules, and we check for restrictions near airports before flying. We hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID.
Is there a set wind speed for storm damage?
It depends on your policy. Many use gusts of about 55 mph, but each policy sets its own definition. Your policy document will say.

Rented homes, blocks and businesses
A roof problem in a let property affects your tenants as well as the building. A survey shows what needs attention, so you can plan the work around your tenants.
For a freeholder or residents’ company, a roof report is a sound basis for a maintenance plan.
How the survey changes by roof type
Flat roof coverings
Wind can lift the edges of flat roof coverings or tear them. Damage is photographed and described.
Ridge and hip tiles
A lifted ridge tile can let water into the roof. Each one is recorded with photos.
The survey, step by step
Photos are taken throughout the visit, so the report shows exactly what we saw. We take close-ups from wherever is safe. A typical visit takes an hour or two for most homes, depending on how much of the roof was hit. Older roofs in small places like Nately Scures can have low, tight loft spaces, so it helps to know whether there’s a loft hatch and how easy it is to reach. We only go where it is safe.
- We start with the details: when the storm hit and what damage you can see.
- We view the roof from wherever it can be seen safely, including the loft where there is access.
- The damage is recorded with photographs, area by area.
- The likely cause is recorded, along with any evidence of older wear.
- The findings are written up with photographs for you to share with your insurer.
Before we arrive
- Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at
- Keep pets inside or away from the areas we’re looking at
- Make sure the loft hatch can be reached

Can I check my roof myself?
Your own check is a good start, but it is not a survey. From the ground, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight.
If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.
Storm damage roof reports in Nately Scures: local notes
The wider area around Nately Scures has a long history of building, with The Vyne about 4.9 miles north-west. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material. A number of Hampshire villages keep thatched roofs on their older buildings. Slate and clay tile are the usual coverings on older South East houses, with concrete tiles on many later estates. Knowing the roof type helps narrow down where water may be getting in.
For an older house near a landmark such as Church of St. Nicholas, old mortar, worn lead and slipped slates are the usual suspects when water gets in. Anyone responsible for a site like Robert May's School will know that a leak through a large roof is often found some distance from where the water shows inside. If you let a flat or house near Hook station, a tenant living with a leak needs the cause found, not just the stain painted over.

Tips from our surveys
Some practical points come up on survey after survey. They apply to most roofs:
- Note the date and time you first saw the damage
- Keep any slates, tiles or debris that fall, if it’s safe to do so
- Keep invoices for temporary repairs
- Ask a roofer for emergency temporary protection if water is coming in
Once we have been, the findings are written up with photos. It sets out what is damaged, the likely cause and any signs of older wear. Basic reports arrive within 48 hours, Standard reports in 24 to 48 hours and Premium reports the same day.
Ask a tree specialist about branches over the roof. Branches can hit or scrape the roof in a storm.
