Storm damage roof reports in Oliver's Battery

How a storm damage roof report works in Oliver's Battery

The Financial Ombudsman looks at three things when it considers a storm damage complaint: were there storm conditions on or around the date, is the damage consistent with a storm, and was the storm the main cause. Our report focuses on the second and third points. You or your insurer can check the weather for the date. If you’re worried about loose or torn flashings and slates and tiles blown off the roof, we can find out what’s behind it.

Many homes in small places like Oliver's Battery face open ground, where storms hit ridges, verges and chimneys hardest. Once water gets into older walls, it takes a long time to dry, which makes finding the cause quickly worthwhile. A written record also helps if you need to explain it to anyone else.

You receive the findings by email, easy to pass on to a roofer, an agent or an insurer. Turnaround is within 48 hours for Basic, 24–48 hours for Standard and same day for Premium.

Leave it or get it looked at?

The sooner the damage is recorded, the clearer the evidence. Later weather and temporary repairs can make it harder to see what happened. In a small place like Oliver's Battery, homes can be exposed to wind and rain, which finds any gap, and older walls, once damp, take a long time to dry.

Thermal imaging and drone inspection (where applicable) come with the Premium Survey, which starts from £400, with VAT included. We will tell you which package suits the questions you have.

Why us?

  • Thermal imaging and drones used where they help
  • CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID)
  • An independent look at the roof
  • Clear package prices, with VAT included

How it works

Where it’s relevant and can be reached safely, the roof space is checked as well as the outside. In the loft, the signs we look for are staining, damp, daylight and sagging. All in, the survey normally takes roughly 1–2 hours for most houses; commercial roofs usually need 3–4 hours. For a village or hamlet like Oliver's Battery, the journey is planned beforehand: tell us about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. The roof is looked at from ground level, from windows, from the loft where there’s safe access and from the roof where it’s safe.

  1. First we go through when the storm hit and what you’ve noticed.
  2. We look at the roof from wherever it’s safe.
  3. Each area of damage is photographed and described.
  4. The report notes whether the damage fits a storm, older wear or both.
  5. We send you the report by email for your insurer.

Your questions about storm damage roof reports in Oliver's Battery

Is Oliver's Battery within the area you cover?

Yes, we do. We cover the whole of London and South East England, and smaller places are part of that. The journey is planned ahead, so it helps to know about access.

Do you cover Oliver's Battery?

Yes, Oliver's Battery is within the area we cover. We work right across London and the South East. You can phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the address and some details, and we’ll talk through which survey suits.

How are storm damage reports priced?

A storm damage report starts from £150. Commercial and larger roofs are quoted on size. The report doesn’t include repair costs.

How long is the visit?

It usually takes between one and two hours at most homes, or half a day or so for a commercial building. You will then get the report by email.

Are you loss adjusters?

No. We aren’t loss adjusters and don’t act for you with the insurer. We give you an independent report of the damage for you to send to your insurer.

Do you survey on Saturdays and Sundays?

Visits run seven days a week in the daytime. Let us know your preferred days when booking.

Can you tell me if my roof has asbestos?

No. We don’t sample or test for asbestos. The report may flag materials that could contain asbestos on buildings built or refurbished before 2000, with a recommendation to have a specialist asbestos surveyor check before it is disturbed.

Practical tips

Most of what helps is simple and safe from ground level. Our suggestions:

  • Arrange temporary cover with a roofer if rain is getting in
  • Keep a note of the date of the storm
  • Tell your insurer about the damage promptly
  • Keep fallen slates or tiles as evidence if safe

If anything in the report is not clear, just ask us. The Standard Survey includes a follow-up consultation and the Premium Survey an in-person consultation.

Keep records of roof work and surveys. They can help show the roof was looked after.

Should I look at the roof myself first?

During heavy rain, look at the gutters from the ground or a window. Overflowing water can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.

What you can’t do safely is get up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way. That’s where a survey comes in, using safe viewpoints and a drone where applicable.

Storm damage roof reports in Oliver's Battery: local notes

Older buildings may be listed or sit in a conservation area. Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the council can say whether a street is in a conservation area. In either case, a change of roofing material may need consent. Thatch survives on some older buildings in Hampshire’s villages. Across the South East, older homes tend to have slate or clay tiles, and many later ones concrete tiles. Different coverings let water in at different points, which shapes where the search starts.

If you own a rental within reach of Shawford station, finding the cause of a leak fast keeps a tenant’s home dry and the work focused. If you look after a building such as Olivers Battery Primary School, a leak through a large roof is often found some distance from where the water shows inside. Living close to St. Cross Park is pleasant, but mature trees mean leaves in gutters and valleys each autumn.
