How a gutter survey works in Oliver's Battery
Most blocked gutters are full of leaves, moss or silt. Buildings near trees collect more, and moss washing off a tiled or slate roof adds to it. Our survey shows which gutters are blocked or standing full and where outlets or hoppers are choked and whether overflows are working. Photos show each problem clearly. It is an easy job to put off, but they rarely get better. Typical surveys look at downpipes that are split or coming away and gutters overflowing in heavy rain, on downpipes, eaves gutters and fascias and soffits.
Village roofs often face open fields and take the full force of wind and rain, which is hard on ridges, chimneys, flashings and gutters. Damp in old walls is slow to dry, so a small leak can do a lot of harm. A written report sets out what to deal with and in what order. Lead flashings and old chimney stacks are often where weather gets in first.
The written findings come by email, easy to pass on to a roofer, an agent or an insurer. Turnaround is within 48 hours for Basic, 24–48 hours for Standard and same day for Premium.

Signs you need a gutter survey in Oliver's Battery
Overflowing gutters in a downpour are a common reason to book. Others notice a damp wall, a stained ceiling or a green streak down the brickwork. The survey helps pin down the source before more damage is done.
Look out for signs like these:
- Leaking or loose downpipes
- Rotten fascias or stained soffits
- Blocked outlets and hoppers
- Water spilling over the gutter edge
If you live near a park like St. Cross Park, or anywhere with mature trees, autumn leaves can block gutters and valleys.

Landlord and commercial surveys in Oliver's Battery
A roof problem in a let property affects your tenants as well as the building. A survey helps you spot issues early and plan the work.
Where a roof is shared: we need access agreed with the building owner or managing agent. Let us know about it when you book and we’ll plan the survey around it.
How the survey changes by roof type
Cast iron gutters
Cracks often open on the back of cast iron downpipes, so we look closely at the walls around them.
Aluminium and other metal gutters
On big buildings, one blocked outlet can affect a long run, so we check the outlets carefully.
Local roofs in Oliver's Battery
Before planning roof work on an older home, find out whether it is listed or in a conservation area. Listed building consent covers changes to a listed building’s special interest, and an Article 4 direction can bring extra controls in a conservation area. Some Hampshire villages still have thatched roofs. Slate and clay tile are the usual coverings on older South East houses, with concrete tiles on many later estates. Whatever the covering, it’s frequently the fixings, flashings, valleys and gutters that give out first.
The streets around a church like Saint Mark's are often among the oldest in a place, and if yours is one of the older homes nearby, its chimney, valleys and lead work are likely to be the parts that need attention first. For landlords with property near Shawford station, a roof report helps you deal with small faults before they turn into a call from a tenant.

Your questions about gutter surveys in Oliver's Battery
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Oliver's Battery?
Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. It is worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.
Can a landlord with a rental near Shawford station book a roof survey?
Yes, rented property is part of what we cover. You can call 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the address and a few details.
Will the survey check for asbestos?
No. We do not test for asbestos. Where gutters, downpipes or soffits could be asbestos cement, we flag them and recommend a specialist asbestos surveyor checks them before they’re disturbed.
What’s the price of a gutter survey?
Our packages start from £150 for Basic, £250 for Standard and £400 for Premium, including VAT. Just call 07833 053749 or drop us an email for a price.
Do you climb onto every roof?
Only when it’s safe. Most of what we need can be seen from safe viewpoints, the loft and, where it applies, a drone, and the report notes anything we couldn’t see.
Do you need to get into the loft?
Where it is relevant to the survey and there’s safe access, yes. A clear path to the hatch helps, and if the loft can’t be reached safely, the report says so.
Will you check if gutters are causing damp inside?
We check whether rainwater from the gutters is reaching the wall, through overflows, drips or damaged downpipes. We can’t see inside walls, so we report on what’s visible.

How the survey works
When we arrive, we begin with a quick chat about the roof and anything that is worrying you. We then inspect everything that can be seen safely, using the ground, windows, the loft and a drone where it applies. Most surveys take roughly 1–2 hours at a house, depending on how many gutter runs and downpipes there are. Older roofs in small places like Oliver's Battery can have low, tight loft spaces, so let us know about the loft hatch and any ladder. We only go where it is safe.
- We start with what you’ve noticed, like damp or overflowing gutters.
- We walk round the building and check the gutters, downpipes and fascias from the ground.
- Valleys, parapets and box gutters are inspected where they can safely be seen.
- The loft space is checked for staining, where it can be reached safely.
- You receive a report with photos and recommendations.

Checking the roof from ground level
It helps to keep a record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Send it with your enquiry, as it helps us focus the survey.
Your own check is a good start, but it is not a survey. From the ground, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are frequently out of sight, and those are details a survey looks at closely.
What this survey can’t tell you
A survey is a careful look at the gutter, but it cannot do everything. The main limits are:
- The inside of a downpipe along its whole length
- Underground drains, which need a CCTV drain survey
- Parts of gutters that cannot be seen safely
