Gutter survey in St Cross: what you get
Your gutters take the rain from the roof and lead it away from the walls. If they clog, drip or sag, the water ends up somewhere it shouldn’t and that normally means the walls or the inside of the building. We check the full rainwater system above ground, including gutters, valleys, outlets, hoppers and downpipes. The findings go into a written report with photos. If you’re worried about fascia boards damaged by overflowing water and cracked or loose downpipes, a survey will tell you what’s going on, on fascias and soffits, valley gutters and downpipes alike.
In a smaller place like St Cross, some roofs stand more exposed to wind and rain than in a built-up town. That weather tells first on ridges, verges, chimneys and flashings. Checking those edges shows whether anything has begun to work loose. A loose ridge tile or slate gives the wind something to catch, and others soon follow.
What you get is a clear record of the gutter on the day we saw it. It is useful straight away, and a good reference for later, for instance when you want to check whether anything has changed.

Should I look at the roof myself first?
Keep a simple record: dates of leaks, photos from ground level and any work done on the roof. Share it with us when booking, as it helps us focus the survey.
Look up at the roof after a storm, from the ground: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Do not go up yourself.
What happens if roof problems are left?
A blocked valley or parapet gutter does not spill harmlessly. It can back up into the loft space and the rooms below usually during the worst downpours. It’s worth having these gutters looked at before the wetter months. Tradespeople may need to travel further to a smaller place like St Cross, so it helps to plan roof work rather than call someone out in a hurry. Knowing early gives you time to get the right people in.
What a survey costs comes down to the roof itself: how big it is, how high it is, the number of separate roofs and how it can be reached and seen safely. Our price is from £150, including VAT.

Signs you need a gutter survey in St Cross
Many people get in touch after seeing water pour over a gutter in heavy rain. Others notice a damp wall, a stained ceiling or a green streak down the brickwork. A survey helps show where the water is coming from before more damage is done.
Look out for signs like these:
- Soffits marked by water
- Choked outlets or hopper heads
- Dripping or leaking gutter joints
- Leaking or loose downpipes
Anyone responsible for a site like St Faith's Church of England Primary School will know that its roofs, gutters and any chimneys need the same checks as a house’s, just on a bigger scale.
Before booking anyone
- Which viewpoints they use to see the roof
- How long they’ve been surveying roofs
- Will they check the loft as well as the outside?
- What the report includes, and whether it has photos
Before and after the survey
From years of surveys, a few habits stand out as worth the effort:
- Include valley, parapet and box gutters when clearing
- Watch ceilings under valley gutters for fresh marks
- Watch for green marks down the brickwork
- Get trees that overhang the gutters trimmed
Landlords and managing agents can keep the report with the building’s records and use it to plan upkeep. The photos help when you explain the work to others.
Don’t forget valley, parapet and box gutters. They collect leaves and silt just like eaves gutters but they’re much harder to spot, so ask for them to be included when gutters are cleared.
St Cross homes and their roofs
An older home may be listed, or stand in a conservation area. Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the council can say whether a street is in a conservation area. In either case, a change of roofing material may need consent. Some Hampshire villages still have thatched roofs. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. Whichever you have, the details that tend to fail before the covering itself get the closest look.
For an older house near a landmark such as St. Cross Church, old fixings, lead flashings and tall chimneys are typical of older roofs. Homes near green spaces like St. Cross Park can get more leaves in their gutters in autumn.

The survey, step by step
Before we start, let us know why you’ve booked: buying, a leak, storm damage, new work or just wanting to know where things stand. It helps us focus on what matters most to you. The visit usually takes an hour or two at most homes, rising to roughly 3–4 hours on a commercial building. A visit to St Cross is planned like any other: the time, the access and where to park are agreed in advance. Weekday and weekend visits are both possible. If there are outbuildings or garages you want looked at, mention them.
- First, we agree the areas to focus on.
- We look along each run for debris, sagging and drips.
- We check the outlets, hoppers, downpipes and any overflows.
- We check fascias, soffits and walls for water damage.
- Findings are photographed and set out in a written report.
Getting ready for the survey
- If it isn’t your property yet, arrange access through the agent
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Keep pets out of the way during the survey

Your questions about gutter surveys in St Cross
Is my home in St Cross listed or in a conservation area?
The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it’s worth checking before planning any.
Do you cover smaller places like St Cross?
Yes, we do. We survey roofs across London and South East England, and smaller places are part of that. Longer journeys are simply planned in advance.
Does someone need to be in?
If the survey includes the loft or the inside of the building, someone needs to let us in. We will talk about access as you book.
How many surveys have you done?
We’ve completed more than 5,000 surveys, over more than 20 years.
What will the report tell me?
It sets out what we found, why it matters and what we recommend, backed by photos. It also says if any part of the roof couldn’t be seen safely.
Are hidden gutters like valleys and box gutters included?
Yes, as far as they can be seen safely. We use the ground, windows, the roof space and the roof where it is safe, and by drone where it’s applicable.
Does the season matter for a gutter survey?
Whenever suits you. If you’ve already seen a gutter overflowing, it is best not to wait, because the walls take the water.
