Ridge and hip tiles

The ridge and hips are among the most exposed parts of a roof. The survey notes loose, cracked or missing ridge and hip tiles.

Lead flashings

When flashings lift, water can get behind them. We note where this has happened and any damp inside.

About our storm damage roof report in Anthill Common

Most policies don’t cover wear and tear. So it matters whether the damage came from the storm or from a roof that was already worn. Our report records both: recent damage alongside any older defects, like nail fatigue on slates or eroded pointing. We describe what we see, whichever way it points. How the policy applies is for your insurer to decide. If you’ve noticed damaged ridges and hips and broken or displaced guttering, we can find out what’s behind it, on flat roofs, slate and tile slopes and ridges and hips alike.

For a small place like Anthill Common, the inspection is the same as anywhere: we simply plan the journey and access ahead. Tell us where the water shows, when it appears and anything you’ve noticed outside, along with any repairs done before. If you have photos of the water coming in, they help as well.

It is not only a list of defects. For each finding, it explains what it is, why it matters and what we’d recommend, so you can plan your next steps.

Landlords, agents and block managers in Anthill Common

Managing agents and residents’ management companies use roof surveys to plan maintenance. The report sets out what needs attention now and what can wait, which helps when budgeting.

Where a roof is shared: access has to be agreed with whoever owns or manages the building. Mention it when you contact us and we will plan the survey around it.

What happens on the day

We check the roof from outside and, where it’s relevant and there is safe access, from inside the roof space too. In the loft, the signs we look for are staining, damp, daylight and sagging. All in, the survey normally takes between one and two hours for most homes, depending on how much of the roof was hit. Around Anthill Common, older homes can have small or awkward roof spaces, so let us know about the loft hatch and any ladder. Only areas that can be reached safely are inspected.

  1. You let us know what happened and whether a roofer has made the roof safe.
  2. Inside, we look for signs of water in the loft and rooms below.
  3. The roof is inspected from ground level, windows and the roof where it is safe.
  4. We record fresh damage and older defects.
  5. The report, with photos, is emailed to you.

Advice

Checking the roof from ground level

Look up at the roof after a storm, from ground level: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Don’t go up yourself.

A lot can be seen from the ground. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Please don’t climb up for a closer look.

Common questions in Anthill Common

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Anthill Common?

Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.

Does being near the coast affect roofs in Anthill Common?

Yes, coastal weather is harder on roofs: there’s more wind, and more salt in the air. Ridges, verges, flashings and fixings are where it typically shows, and Anthill Common is within about 5 miles of the coast.

Who handles emergency protection after a storm?

Emergency cover over a damaged roof should be arranged with a roofer. Take photos from ground level first if it is safe. Keep receipts for any emergency work.

How should I record storm damage myself?

Stay off the roof. Take photos from ground level or from windows. Note the date and time, and photograph any damage inside.

Do I have to be there for the survey?

If the survey includes the loft or the inside of the building, someone needs to let us in. Access is agreed with you when you book.

Can I challenge a declined storm claim?

Complain to your insurer first. After that, the Financial Ombudsman Service may be able to look at it. An independent report can add to your evidence, but we cannot say how it will turn out.

I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?

Yes, once whoever controls the roof agrees access. On a shared roof we can only inspect the parts we are allowed to reach.

What a survey costs

Our packages start from £150, including VAT. The price for your roof depends on:

  • The number of roofs, including extensions and garages
  • The use of thermal imaging or a drone
  • The package you choose: Basic, Standard or Premium
  • How complicated the roof is, with its valleys, chimneys and parapets

For a price for your roof in Anthill Common, phone 07833 053749 or email us and tell us about the roof. The price is agreed before a date is set.

Booking your survey

To price your survey accurately, we’ll ask about:

  • Photos of the roof, taken safely from ground level or a window
  • Where any leaks, stains or damp patches show inside
  • Whether there is a loft hatch, a shared roof or tricky access
  • The reason for the survey, like buying, a leak or storm damage

Our price is from £150, including VAT. The exact figure depends on the roof and the package, and you can phone 07833 053749 or send us an email to find out.

Honest limits

Before booking, it’s worth knowing what a survey won’t do:

  • What your policy covers, which depends on its wording
  • Negotiating a claim settlement
  • Repair costs or quotes for the work

If you’re not sure which survey you need, phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you book. What our survey covers.

What a storm damage roof report looks like in Anthill Common

Anthill Common is within about 5 miles of the coast, so there’s more wind and more salt in the air than further inland. Driving rain off the sea can be pushed into gaps that stay dry in calmer weather. Some Hampshire villages still have thatched roofs. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. Where water gets in depends a good deal on what the roof is made of and how it’s detailed.

Take an older house close to Church of All Saints: leaks on older roofs frequently start at lead flashings, valleys or around old chimney stacks. If you own a rental within reach of Portchester station, tracing a leak quickly matters when a tenant is living with it.
