About our storm damage roof report in Grateley

Wear and tear is typically excluded from home insurance. That makes the difference between storm damage and old wear important. Our report records both: fresh breaks and recently moved slates or tiles, and older problems such as corroded nails or worn mortar. We give an honest view of what we see. Your insurer then decides how its policy applies. We are often asked to look into water coming in after the storm and holes or cracks caused by debris, across flashings, gutters and fascias and flat roofs.

Many homes in small places like Grateley face open ground, so storms hit ridges, verges and chimneys hard. Once water gets into older walls, it takes a long time to dry, which makes finding the cause quickly worthwhile. A record with photos is useful if you need to show the damage to anyone else.

The report records the roof as we found it on the day. That makes it useful now and a handy reference later, for example when you want to check whether anything has changed.

What we look for on each type of roof

Chimney stacks

Stacks with existing defects tend to suffer more in storms. We record both the storm damage and the older wear.

Slate roofs

Slates often outlast the nails that hold them. We check whether slipped slates suggest storm damage, older wear or both.

Prices for storm damage roof reports in Grateley

Survey packages start from £150, with VAT included. What you pay for your roof depends on:

  • House, block, shop or office
  • Which survey package you book
  • Whether thermal imaging or a drone is needed
  • Chimneys, valleys, parapets and other details

Larger roofs, taller buildings and commercial roofs take longer, so the price reflects that. The price is confirmed before booking.

Getting in touch

To price your survey accurately, we’ll ask about:

  • Any marks or damp showing indoors
  • Any deadline, such as an exchange date
  • Anything about access we should know
  • The property’s address and postcode

A quick phone call is normally the easiest start: phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form, and we will ask about the building and what you need. The price is agreed before a date is set.

Questions from Grateley

Is Grateley in the area you cover?

Yes, Grateley is one of the places we work. Every survey there gets the same written report with photos.

Do you cover smaller places like Grateley?

Yes, Grateley is on our map. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one, with the route planned beforehand.

How strong does the wind have to be for a storm claim?

There’s no single figure. Many use gusts of about 55 mph, but each policy sets its own definition. Your policy document will say.

How much is a storm damage roof report?

Prices start from £150, including VAT. Larger or more complex roofs are quoted for their size. It doesn’t include repair costs, so you will need a roofer’s quote for those.

Which days do you carry out surveys?

We survey on any day from Monday to Sunday, during the day. Just say which days work for you.

Are you loss adjusters?

No. We’re not loss adjusters, and we don’t negotiate claims. We provide an independent record of the roof, which you can pass to your insurer.

My storm claim was turned down. What now?

Raise it with your insurer first. The Financial Ombudsman Service may look at it if that doesn’t resolve it. The Ombudsman looks at whether there were storm conditions, whether the damage fits a storm and whether the storm was the main cause.

How the survey works

On the day, we begin with a quick chat about the roof and anything that’s worrying you. After that, we look at everything we can see safely. The survey normally takes between one and two hours for most homes, depending on how much of the roof was hit. Older roofs in small places like Grateley can have low, tight loft spaces, so it helps to know whether there’s a loft hatch and how easy it is to reach. Only areas that can be reached safely are inspected.

  1. We start with what you’ve seen and any temporary repairs.
  2. Inside, we look for signs of water in the loft and rooms below.
  3. The roof is inspected from ground level, windows and the roof where it is safe.
  4. Storm damage and older wear are recorded separately where we can.
  5. The report, with photos, is emailed to you.

Advice

Before and after the survey

From years of surveys, a few habits stand out:

  • File receipts for anything you pay for
  • Record any water damage in rooms and the loft
  • Don’t go onto the roof to take pictures
  • Check your policy for how to report damage

Questions about the findings are always welcome. Standard Surveys come with a follow-up consultation, and Premium Surveys with an in-person one.

Ask a tree specialist about branches over the roof. Branches can hit or scrape the roof in a storm.

What a storm damage roof report doesn’t cover

Without opening up the roof, some things stay hidden, and that sets some limits:

  • What your policy covers, which depends on its wording
  • Repair costs or quotes for the work
  • Whether your insurer will pay the claim

If in doubt, ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we’ll point you to the right survey before you book. What our survey covers.

What we check

  • Flat roofs
  • Chimney stacks
  • Ridges and hips
  • Slate and tile slopes
  • Gutters and fascias
  • Flashings

Storm damage roof reports in Grateley: local notes

If your home is older, it is worth knowing whether it’s listed or in a conservation area before planning roof work. Listed building consent covers changes to a listed building’s special interest, and an Article 4 direction can bring extra controls in a conservation area. Thatch survives on some older buildings in Hampshire’s villages. Older houses in the South East often have slate or clay tile roofs, while many later estates have concrete tiles. Where water gets in depends a good deal on what the roof is made of and how it is detailed.

If you let a flat or house near Grateley station, tracing a leak quickly matters when a tenant is living with it. Anyone responsible for a site like Grateley Primary School will know that water through a big roof can travel a long way before it drips, so the search covers more than the obvious spot.

What we’re asked to look at in Grateley

Others book after an insurer has queried a claim. You get an independent record of what the roof shows. We cannot say whether the decision will change.

People typically book a survey when they’ve noticed one of these:

  • Ridge tiles that have come loose
  • Slates and tiles blown off the roof
  • Damaged gutters and fascias
  • Water coming in after the storm

If your house is among the older ones in the streets near Church of St Leonard, leaks on older roofs often start at lead flashings, valleys or around old chimney stacks.
