About our storm damage roof report in Martyr Worthy

Each roof is looked at from the safest viewpoints available: from the ground, from windows and higher points, from the loft space and from the roof where it is safe. We photograph and describe each area of damage. We note any part we couldn’t see. You get a written report with photographs to give to your insurer. If you are worried about roofs hit by falling trees and torn or lifted flat roof coverings, we can find out what’s behind it, on slate and tile slopes, flat roofs and flashings alike.

For a small place like Martyr Worthy, the inspection is the same as anywhere: the journey and access are just planned beforehand. Tell us where the water shows, when it appears and anything you’ve noticed outside, along with any repairs done before. If you have photographs of the water coming in, they help as well.

The report works through the roof section by section, from the main slopes down to the gutters and outlets, with a note and a photo for each point. You’ll see the good as well as the bad.

What we look for on each type of roof

Slate roofs

After strong winds, we often see cracked and slipped slates. Each area is photographed and described.

Chimney stacks

Wind can pull the flashings away from a chimney. We photograph any we find.

Why get it checked now?

Leaving storm damage can let water into the loft space and rooms below. Further water damage can blur what the storm actually did. Emergency temporary protection should be arranged with a roofer. Older and listed buildings around Martyr Worthy may need consent and matching materials for repairs, so a defect found early gives time to plan the work properly.

Larger roofs, taller buildings and commercial roofs take longer, so they’re priced to match. You’ll know the figure before booking.

Storm damage roof reports around Martyr Worthy

A number of Hampshire villages keep thatched roofs on their older buildings. Slate and clay tile are the usual coverings on older South East houses, with concrete tiles on many later estates. The covering and its details give the first clues when tracing where water is coming from. If your home is older, it is worth knowing whether it is listed or in a conservation area before planning roof work. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, and councils can also use Article 4 directions to control changes in conservation areas.

Landlords with a home close to Winchester station may find that tracing a leak quickly matters when a tenant is living with it. The streets around a church like Church of St Swithin are frequently among the oldest in a place, and if you own one of the older houses nearby, old mortar, worn lead and slipped slates are the usual suspects when water gets in. Anyone responsible for a site like Itchen Abbas Primary School will know that water through a big roof can travel a long way before it drips, so the search covers more than the obvious spot.

When you need someone else

Our survey isn’t a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. Other limits to bear in mind:

  • Negotiating a claim settlement
  • Repair costs or quotes for the work
  • Your insurer’s view of the claim

If you’re not sure which survey you need, ring 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll give you a straight answer. What our survey covers.

Roof types and parts we check

  • Chimney stacks
  • Flat roofs
  • Gutters and fascias
  • Ridges and hips
  • Slate and tile slopes
  • Flashings

The survey, step by step

There isn’t much for you to do on the day. Show us any stains, drips or problem areas you know about, and we’ll get on with the inspection. A typical survey takes about 1–2 hours at most homes, and more on a big or complicated roof. Somewhere like Martyr Worthy needs a little journey planning: let us know about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. On the day, we inspect everything that’s safely in view, inside and out.

  1. You tell us what happened and whether a roofer has made the roof safe.
  2. We check inside, including the loft where there’s access, for water damage.
  3. The roof is inspected from the ground, windows and the roof where it is safe.
  4. We record fresh damage and older defects.
  5. You receive the written report with photographs.

Before the survey

  • Unlock side gates and any roof access doors
  • Check the loft hatch can be reached
  • Check pets are kept safely away

Advice

DIY checks: what’s safe

After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Take a photo and write down when you saw it, as it helps a surveyor trace the cause.

If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.

For landlords and managing agents

For a freeholder or residents’ company, a roof report is a sound basis for a maintenance plan, putting the urgent items at the top.

If you own several properties, you can book surveys for several addresses. To arrange surveys for several addresses, ring 07833 053749 or email us with the addresses.

Martyr Worthy: your questions answered

Is Martyr Worthy in the area you cover?

Yes. We cover the whole of London and South East England, and Martyr Worthy is part of that. Just call 07833 053749 or use the contact form and let us know about the property.

Is Martyr Worthy within the area you cover?

Yes. Martyr Worthy is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. Our area covers London and South East England. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there as you book.

Will my insurer pay for an old roof?

Insurers normally exclude wear and tear. Our report gives an honest view of what’s recent damage and what’s older wear. Your insurer decides the claim.

Is this an asbestos survey?

No. We do not carry out asbestos surveys or testing. We flag materials that could contain asbestos, like cement sheets or soffits on pre-2000 buildings, and recommend a specialist asbestos surveyor checks them before they’re disturbed.

Can I challenge a declined storm claim?

Raise it with your insurer first. If it isn’t resolved, the Financial Ombudsman Service may be able to help. The Ombudsman looks at whether there were storm conditions, whether the damage fits a storm and whether the storm was the main cause.

Who handles emergency protection after a storm?

Emergency cover over a damaged roof should be arranged with a roofer. Take photos from ground level first if it’s safe. Keep receipts for any emergency work.

How long is the visit?

Expect it to take roughly 1–2 hours at a typical home, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. The written report follows by email, on the timescale of your package.
