What you can safely check yourself

What you can’t do safely is get up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery. That part is for a survey.

During heavy rain, look at the gutters from the ground or a window. Overflowing water can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.

Storm damage roof report in Monxton: what you get

The Financial Ombudsman looks at three things when it considers a storm damage complaint: whether there were storm conditions around the date, whether the damage fits a storm, and whether the storm was the main cause. We record what the roof shows about the damage and its likely cause. Weather records for the date are for you or your insurer to check. We’re often asked to look into gutters pulled loose in the wind and holes or cracks caused by debris, on flat roofs, chimney stacks and flashings.

For a small place like Monxton, the inspection is the same as anywhere: we simply plan the journey and access ahead. It helps to know where the water appears, in what weather, and what you’ve seen outside, plus any earlier repairs. Photographs of the stain and of the roof from outside are helpful too.

The report works through the roof section by section, from the coverings down to the gutters. You’ll see the good as well as the bad.

How we price storm damage roof reports

Not every roof costs the same to survey, and it comes down to:

  • Building height and the viewpoints available
  • Any need for thermal images or a drone flight
  • The package you choose: Basic, Standard or Premium
  • The type of building, from a house to a block or an office

Larger roofs, taller buildings and commercial roofs take longer, so they’re priced to match. You’ll know the figure before booking.

Getting in touch

Getting the details right at the start saves time. Please include:

  • Your timetable, like an exchange date
  • Your postcode, so we can check access and travel
  • Pictures from the garden or a window, if you have them
  • The kind of building and roof involved

Getting a price is simple: just call 07833 053749 or use the contact form and give us some details about the property and we’ll explain which survey suits. We confirm the price before anything is booked.

What happens on the day

We check the roof from outside and, where it is relevant and there’s safe access, from inside the loft space too. In the loft, the signs we look for are staining, damp, daylight and sagging, as far as the space allows. All in, the survey usually takes about one to two hours for most homes, depending on how much of the roof was hit. Older roofs in small places like Monxton can have low, tight loft spaces, so it is useful to know whether there is a loft hatch and how easy it is to reach. We only go where it’s safe.

  1. We note the date of the storm and the damage you’ve seen.
  2. The roof is inspected from safe positions.
  3. Each area of damage is photographed and described.
  4. We note the likely cause and any signs of older wear.
  5. You get a written report to pass to your insurer.

Getting ready for the survey

  • Check pets are kept safely away
  • Move anything stored under the loft hatch
  • Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed

Roof problems in a rented home affect tenants as well as the building. A survey shows what needs attention, so you can plan the work.

Monxton: your questions answered

Will you come out to Monxton?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We work right across London and South East England. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route as you book.

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Monxton?

You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it’s in a conservation area. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.

What if my insurer declines the claim?

Start by complaining to the insurer. The Financial Ombudsman Service may look at it if that doesn’t resolve it. The Ombudsman looks at whether there were storm conditions, whether the damage fits a storm and whether the storm was the main cause.

Do you test for asbestos?

No. Our report may flag materials that could contain asbestos, but confirming it is a job for a specialist asbestos surveyor. Buildings built or refurbished before 2000 may contain it.

Does someone need to be in?

Not always. An outside-only look can be arranged beforehand, but anything inside needs someone there to give access.

Who handles emergency protection after a storm?

Emergency cover over a damaged roof should be arranged with a roofer. Take photos from the ground first if it’s safe. Keep receipts for any emergency work.

Is wear and tear covered by insurance?

Insurers usually exclude wear and tear. Our report gives an honest view of what’s recent damage and what’s older wear. The claim decision is your insurer’s.

Storm damage roof reports in Monxton: local notes

Some Hampshire villages still have thatched roofs. Slate and clay tile are the usual coverings on older South East houses, with concrete tiles on many later estates. Knowing the roof type helps narrow down where water may be getting in. What can be done to an older roof may depend on listing or a conservation area. Your council and Historic England’s list will tell you where you stand, before anyone quotes for re-roofing.

For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Amport Church of England Primary School, on a building that size, finding the source of a drip means looking well beyond the stain. If yours is one of the older homes in the streets near Church of St Mary, leaks on older roofs frequently start at lead flashings, valleys or around old chimney stacks. For landlords with property near Andover station, a tenant living with a leak needs the cause found, not just the stain painted over.

Monxton is about 3 miles west of Andover, in Hampshire. Monxton is one of many places we visit across Hampshire, for houses, flats and commercial buildings. Monxton is one of the places in Hampshire we cover for storm damage roof reports. You can also see our page for Southampton.

Different roofs, different checks

Ridge and hip tiles

Worn mortar under ridge tiles can let them lift in a storm. We note whether the mortar looks recently broken or long worn.

Flat roof coverings

Edge trims and laps are often where flat roof coverings start to peel back. We check whether the damage is recent or older.

Why act early in Monxton

A clear, independent record helps you explain the damage to your insurer. It records the damage and what seems to have caused it, so you’re not relying only on your own photos. For an older or listed building in a place like Monxton, repairs may need matching materials and consent, so a defect found early gives time to plan the work properly.

Price depends partly on the package: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 or Premium from £400, all with VAT included. The roof’s size, height and access matter as well.
