About our storm damage roof report in Mullenspond

The Financial Ombudsman asks three questions when it looks at storm complaints: were there storm conditions on or around the date, is the damage consistent with a storm, and was the storm the main cause. Our report focuses on the second and third points. You or your insurer can check the weather for the date. If you are worried about gaps where slates or tiles have gone and cowls or aerials dislodged in the wind, we can find out what’s behind it, whatever the roof.

Many homes in small places like Mullenspond face open ground, so storms hit ridges, verges and chimneys hard. Once water gets into older walls, it takes a long time to dry, which makes finding the cause quickly worthwhile. A written record also helps if you need to explain it to anyone else.

We write the report in plain English, so you do not need to be a roofer to follow it. Photos show what each point refers to.

Should I look at the roof myself first?

It helps to keep a record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Send it with your enquiry, as it helps us focus the survey.

You can learn a lot from ground level. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Please don’t climb up for a closer look.

Mullenspond: your questions answered

Is my home in Mullenspond listed or in a conservation area?

The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it is worth checking before planning any.

Do you cover smaller places like Mullenspond?

We do. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one.

Can you inspect my roof with a drone?

Where it helps and the rules allow, yes. Our sub-250g drone is flown by a CAA-registered operator with a Flyer ID and Operator ID, and the airspace and weather are checked before every flight.

Do you test for asbestos?

No. We can flag materials that might contain asbestos, but only a specialist asbestos surveyor can confirm it. Buildings built or refurbished before 2000 may contain it.

Can you survey at the weekend?

Visits run seven days a week in the daytime, which suits people who work during the week. Let us know your preferred days when booking.

What do I do if water is coming in?

Emergency cover over a damaged roof should be arranged with a roofer. Take photos from the ground first if it is safe. Keep receipts for any emergency work.

Will my insurer pay out if I get a storm damage report?

That is not something we can promise. The decision rests with your insurer and its policy. Our report gives you an independent record of the damage and its likely cause.

What affects the price in Mullenspond

All our prices include VAT. What changes the price is:

  • The use of thermal imaging or a drone
  • Features like valleys, chimneys, dormers and parapets
  • Height and safe access
  • The type of building, from a house to a block or an office

The Premium Survey includes thermal imaging and drone inspection where it applies, from £400 inc. VAT. We will tell you which package suits the questions you have.

What we need to know

Before you get in touch, it’s useful to have:

  • Any stains, drips or damp patches you’ve seen indoors
  • What made you get in touch
  • Any photos you have, taken from ground level or a window
  • How the loft is reached, if there is one

A quick phone call is normally the easiest start: ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form. You will have a price before anything is arranged.

What this survey can’t tell you

We only report what can be seen safely on the day, so there are some things a survey cannot cover:

  • The outcome of a claim
  • Your insurer’s view of the claim
  • Negotiating a claim settlement

If you are not sure which survey you need, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll give you a straight answer. What a survey covers and doesn’t.

Why it is worth a survey now in Mullenspond

A clear, independent record helps you explain the damage to your insurer. It sets out what we found and the likely cause, alongside any photos you took yourself. Matching old materials, such as handmade tiles or stone slates, can take time to source. That’s one more reason to find defects before they become urgent.

What a survey costs comes down to the roof itself: its size, its height, how many sections it has and how safely it can be seen. Our price is from £150, including VAT.

Why choose Independent Roof Survey in Mullenspond

Tips from our surveys

Most of what helps is simple and safe from ground level. Our suggestions:

  • Do not go onto the roof to take pictures
  • Get a roofer to make the roof safe if needed
  • Look at what your policy says about wear and tear
  • Report the damage to your insurer as soon as you can

If you’re unhappy with how your insurer handles the claim, you can complain to them first. After that, you may be able to take it to the Financial Ombudsman Service.

Keep the roof in good order between storms. Have loose slates, tiles and flashings seen to promptly.

The survey, step by step

We work from the outside in: outside views come first, then the roof space if there’s safe access. All told, expect between one and two hours at most homes, rising to roughly 3–4 hours on a commercial building. Older roofs in small places like Mullenspond can have low, tight loft spaces, so it is useful to know whether there is a loft hatch and how easy it is to reach. We only go where it is safe.

  1. First we go through when the storm hit and what you’ve noticed.
  2. The roof is inspected from safe positions.
  3. We record and photograph the damage.
  4. The report notes whether the damage fits a storm, older wear or both.
  5. You get a written report to pass to your insurer.

Getting ready for the survey

  • Check pets are kept safely away
  • Let us know where we can park nearby
  • Leave side gates unlocked

Wind, rain and roofs in Mullenspond

Thatch survives on some older buildings in Hampshire’s villages. Older houses in the South East frequently have slate or clay tile roofs, while many later estates have concrete tiles. Where water gets in depends a good deal on what the roof is made of and how it is detailed. England has around 10,000 conservation areas and about 500,000 listed buildings. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material, so check with the council.

If you live in an older home near Church of St Nicholas, old mortar, worn lead and slipped slates are the usual suspects when water gets in. If you look after a building like Amport Church of England Primary School, on a building that size, finding the source of a drip means looking well beyond the stain. If you let a flat or house near Grateley station, a tenant living with a leak needs the cause found, not just the stain painted over.
