What we are asked to look at in Ashlett

Others book after an insurer has queried a claim. You get an independent record of what the roof shows. What happens next is up to the insurer.

Signs worth acting on include:

  • Damaged gutters and fascias
  • Loose or torn flashings
  • Holes or cracks caused by debris
  • Water coming in after the storm

Landlords with a home close to Hamble station may find that a tenant living with a leak needs the cause found, not just the stain painted over.

About our storm damage roof report in Ashlett

When a storm has damaged your roof, a written record can help you explain it to your insurer. We photograph the damage, describe it and note whether it fits storm damage, older wear or both. We are not loss adjusters, and we can’t say whether a claim will be paid. What we give you is an independent record of the roof. If you are worried about slates and tiles blown off the roof and roofs hit by falling trees, a survey will tell you what’s going on, on ridges and hips, flat roofs and flashings alike.

Being in a small place like Ashlett makes no difference to how a leak or storm damage is looked at: the journey and access are just planned in advance. It’s useful to know where the water appears, in what weather, and what you’ve seen outside, plus any earlier repairs. Photographs of the stain and of the roof from outside are helpful too.

We keep jargon out of it: if work is needed, the report says so clearly, along with how urgent it is.

Tips that help

From years of surveys, a few habits stand out as worth the effort:

  • Read your policy wording on storm damage
  • File receipts for anything you pay for
  • Tell your insurer about the damage promptly
  • Arrange temporary cover with a roofer if rain is getting in

You get the report by email and pass it to your insurer yourself. We do not deal with the insurer on your behalf.

A well-maintained roof stands up to storms better. Fix slipped slates, loose ridges and lifted flashings when you spot them.

DIY checks: what’s safe

After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.

A lot can be seen from ground level. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Never climb onto the roof to look.

What happens on the day

Time on site depends on the size and shape of the roof, but as a rough guide the survey takes between one and two hours on an ordinary house, while a commercial roof takes nearer three to four hours. If you have questions on the day, just ask. For a village or hamlet like Ashlett, the journey is planned in advance: tell us about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. On the day, we inspect what can safely be seen, inside and out.

  1. We start with what you’ve seen and any temporary repairs.
  2. Inside, we look for signs of water in the loft and rooms below.
  3. The roof is inspected from the ground, windows and the roof where it is safe.
  4. Storm damage and older wear are recorded separately where we can.
  5. The report, with photos, is emailed to you.

Before the survey

  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Have keys ready for side gates, garages or roof access doors
  • Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed

Booking a survey

If you have photos of the roof, send them over. Take them safely from the ground or a window, and please don’t climb up for a closer look. To get started, phone 07833 053749 or send us an email.

Advice

FAQs for Ashlett

Is my home in Ashlett listed or in a conservation area?

Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it’s worth checking before planning any.

Is Ashlett within the area you cover?

We do. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one, with the route planned beforehand.

Who handles emergency protection after a storm?

A roofer should handle temporary protection. If it is safe, take photos before it goes on. Our report then records the roof.

What wind speed counts as a storm?

Each policy has its own definition. About 55 mph is a common figure in many policies, but check your own wording.

Do you look in the loft space?

Normally, if there’s one and it can be reached safely. From inside, the underside of the roof often shows damp, staining or daylight that can’t be seen from outside.

How should I record storm damage myself?

Safely, from the ground or a window. Never climb onto a roof after a storm. Binoculars can help you see damage from below, and we’ll record the rest.

Does someone need to be in?

That depends on the survey. For inside areas and the loft space, someone has to give us access, while outside access can be discussed when you book.

Why get it checked now?

Many policies expect damage to be reported promptly. Check the wording and tell your insurer as soon as you can. Our report can then add a clear record. Matching old materials, like handmade tiles or stone slates, can take time to source. That’s one more reason to find defects before they become urgent.

What a survey costs comes down to the roof itself: its size, its height, how many sections it has and how safely it can be seen. Prices start from £150, including VAT.

Storm damage roof reports around Ashlett

Ashlett is within about 1 mile of the coast, so there’s more wind and more salt in the air than further inland. In a coastal gale, rain is driven sideways into laps, verges and flashings, and salt air slowly wears metal fixings. Historic houses like Beaulieu Palace House, about 4.7 miles west, show how far back building in the area around Ashlett goes. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first.

If you live in an older home near Church of All Saints, leaks on older roofs often start at lead flashings, valleys or around old chimney stacks. Anyone responsible for a site like Fawley Infant School will know that tracing a leak on a big roof starts with where the water appears and works back.

What we cannot see

This is not a RICS building survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. It also has these limits:

  • A price for the repairs
  • Whether your insurer will pay the claim
  • What’s beneath slates, tiles or membranes

If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or send us an email and we will point you to the right survey before you book. What a survey covers and doesn’t.
