Sprat's Down Storm Damage Roof Report
An independent record of roof damage after a storm for Sprat's Down and the rest of Hampshire. We survey on weekdays and at weekends.
- Water coming in after the storm
- Flashings pulled away from walls or stacks
- Slates and tiles blown off the roof
Practical tips
Small things make a difference, both for the survey and for the roof itself. Some pointers:
- Keep any slates, tiles or debris that fall, if it is safe to do so
- Report the damage to your insurer as soon as you can
- Record any water damage in rooms and the loft
- Look at what your policy says about wear and tear
If anything in the report is not clear, just ask us. Standard Surveys come with a follow-up consultation, and Premium Surveys with an in-person one.
Ask a tree specialist about branches over the roof. They can damage the roof in high winds.
Storm damage roof reports for homes and businesses in Sprat's Down
When a storm has damaged your roof, a written record can help you explain it to your insurer. We photograph the damage, describe it and note whether it fits storm damage, older wear or both. We aren’t loss adjusters, and we cannot say whether a claim will be paid. What we give you is an independent record of the roof. Typical surveys look at slipped or missing slates or tiles and gutters pulled loose in the wind, on gutters and fascias, flat roofs and flashings.
Roofs in small places like Sprat's Down often stand in the open, where storms hit ridges, verges and chimneys hardest. Damp in old stone, brick or timber walls is slow to dry out, which makes finding the cause quickly worthwhile. A written record also helps if you need to explain it to anyone else.
Nothing in the report is left vague: where something needs attention, it says so plainly, along with how urgent it is.

What affects the cost of storm damage roof reports

- The type of building, from a house to a block or an office
- The height of the building and how the roof can be seen safely
- The size of the roof
- Extensions, dormers and garages with roofs of their own
What a survey costs comes down to the roof itself: its size, its height, how many sections it has and how safely it can be seen. Storm damage roof report starts from £150, including VAT.

Sprat's Down questions
Do roofs near the sea, like those around Sprat's Down, take more of a battering?
Often, yes. Sprat's Down is within about 2 miles of the sea, and coastal roofs tend to see faster wear on metal parts and more wind lifting loose pieces.
Do you cover smaller places like Sprat's Down?
Yes, Sprat's Down is on our map. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house.
Should I go up on the roof to take photos?
Please don’t climb onto the roof. Take photos from the ground or from windows. Note the date and time, and photograph any damage inside.
Do you test for asbestos?
No. Asbestos surveys and testing aren’t part of what we do. If we see materials that could contain asbestos, such as cement roof sheets or soffits on buildings from before 2000, we flag them and suggest a specialist asbestos surveyor checks them before any work.
Do you need to get into the loft?
Typically, if there’s one and it can be reached safely. The roof space can show things the outside can’t, like damp timbers, staining or daylight.
What do I do if water is coming in?
A roofer should handle temporary protection. If it is safe, take photos before it goes on. Our report then records the roof.
Do you survey on Saturdays and Sundays?
We survey on any day from Monday to Sunday, during the day. Let us know your preferred days when you book.
Can I check my roof myself?
You can learn a lot from the ground. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Never climb onto the roof to look.
After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Take a photo and write down when you saw it, which helps when we check the roof.
How the survey works
We’ll ask a few questions first, like when any problem began and what work has been done before. The inspection then takes an hour or two at a house, and longer if the damage is spread across a large roof. Older rural homes like those around Sprat's Down can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. Each part is looked at from wherever it can safely be seen, and anything we can’t see is noted.
- You tell us what happened and whether a roofer has made the roof safe.
- Inside, we look for signs of water in the loft and rooms below.
- The roof is inspected from the ground, windows and the roof where it’s safe.
- We record fresh damage and older defects.
- You receive the written report with photographs.
Before we arrive
- Leave a clear route to the loft
- Have keys ready for side gates, garages or roof access doors
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street

What happens if roof problems are left?
The sooner the damage is recorded, the clearer the evidence. Further storms and quick fixes can make the picture less clear. Around Sprat's Down, older homes frequently have old roof timbers, and water through a failed covering can rot timber if it’s left.
Thermal imaging and drone inspection (where it applies) come with the Premium Survey, which starts from £400, including VAT. We’ll tell you which package suits the questions you have.

Storm damage roof reports in Sprat's Down: local notes
Sprat's Down is within about 2 miles of the coast, and being near the sea means more wind and salt than a roof inland would face. Driving rain off the sea can be pushed into gaps that stay dry in calmer weather, while salt slowly corrodes metal fixings and flashings. Beaulieu Palace House, about 4.7 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Sprat's Down. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters, and the council can say whether a home is in a conservation area.
If you look after a building such as Fawley Infant School, water through a big roof can travel a long way before it drips, so the search covers more than the obvious spot. If you let a flat or house near Hamble station, tracing a leak quickly matters when a tenant is living with it. The streets around a church such as St George are frequently among the oldest in a place, and if your house is among the older ones nearby, lead flashings, valleys and old chimneys are typical places for water to get in.
