Storm damage roof reports around Quidhampton
A number of Hampshire villages keep thatched roofs on their older buildings. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. The covering and its details give the first clues when tracing where water is coming from. England has around 10,000 conservation areas and about 500,000 listed buildings. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material, so the council is the place to ask.
Take a building like Overton Church of England Primary School: tracing a leak on a big roof starts with where the water appears and works back. The streets around a church like Church of St Mary are often among the oldest in a place, and if yours is one of the older homes nearby, old mortar, worn lead and slipped slates are the usual suspects when water gets in. If you own a rental within reach of Overton station, a tenant living with a leak needs the cause found, not just the stain painted over.

Storm damage roof reports for homes and businesses in Quidhampton
The Financial Ombudsman asks three questions when it looks at storm complaints: whether there were storm conditions around the date, whether the damage fits a storm, and whether the storm was the main cause. We record what the roof shows about the damage and its likely cause. You or your insurer can check the weather for the date. If you are worried about slates and tiles blown off the roof and gutters pulled loose in the wind, a survey will tell you what’s going on, on slate and tile slopes, flashings and gutters and fascias alike.
Being in a small place like Quidhampton makes no difference to how a leak or storm damage is looked at: we simply plan the journey and access ahead. Tell us where the water shows, when it appears and anything you’ve noticed outside, plus any earlier repairs. Photos of the stain and of the roof from outside are helpful too.
The Standard Survey adds moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

What we do, step by step
Safety comes first on every visit. Everything that can be seen safely is inspected, and if part of the roof can’t be seen, the report says so. The survey normally takes about one to two hours on an ordinary house, or half a day or so for a commercial building. Somewhere like Quidhampton needs a little journey planning: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. The roof is looked at from ground level, from windows, from the loft where there is safe access and from the roof where it’s safe.
- We start with what you’ve seen and any temporary repairs.
- We check inside, including the loft where there’s access, for water damage.
- We view the roof from safe positions.
- We record fresh damage and older defects.
- You receive the written report with photos.
How to prepare
- Check pets are kept safely away
- Have keys ready for side gates, garages or roof access doors
- For flats, check roof access has been agreed

Advice
DIY checks: what’s safe
The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery. That’s where a survey comes in.
A lot can be seen from ground level. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Never climb onto the roof to look.
Leave it or get it looked at?
If the damage is partly wear and tear, it is better to know. We record storm damage and older defects, so you know what the roof shows. In a place like Quidhampton, a barn or garage roof left to fail puts whatever is inside at risk. It is worth including them in a survey before a winter does the damage.

FAQs for Quidhampton
Is Quidhampton within the area you cover?
Yes, Quidhampton is on our map. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one, with the route planned beforehand.
How do I find out if my home in Quidhampton is listed?
You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it is in a conservation area. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.
Do you climb onto every roof?
Only when it is safe. Safety comes first, and fragile or steep roofs cannot always be walked on. We use safe viewpoints, the roof space and a drone where applicable.
Does someone need to be in?
Not always. If we only need the outside, we can agree that beforehand, but anything inside needs someone there to give access.
How are storm damage reports priced?
A storm damage report starts from £150. Commercial and larger roofs are quoted on size. Repair costs aren’t part of the report.
Can you tell me if my roof has asbestos?
No. Asbestos surveys and sampling are not something we do. The report may flag materials that could contain asbestos on buildings built or refurbished before 2000, with a recommendation to have a specialist asbestos surveyor check before it’s disturbed.
Will you fly a drone over my roof?
Where it is applicable and safe, yes. We fly a sub-250g drone and we’re a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID). Drone inspection is part of the Drone Roof Survey and the Premium Survey, where applicable.
What this survey cannot tell you
Some things cannot be seen without opening up the roof, and that sets some limits:
- A decision on your insurance claim
- What your policy covers, which depends on its wording
- Repair costs or quotes for the work
If you are not sure which survey you need, phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer. What a survey covers and does not.

Useful tips for Quidhampton property owners
A few practical points come up again and again on our surveys. They apply to most roofs:
- Look at what your policy says about wear and tear
- Take photos from ground level or a window, never by climbing
- Tell your insurer about the damage promptly
- Take photos of stains and damp inside
Questions about the findings are always welcome. Standard Surveys come with a follow-up consultation, and Premium Surveys with an in-person one.
Keep records of roof work and surveys. They can help show the roof was looked after.
