Wind, rain and roofs in Southington
A number of Hampshire villages keep thatched roofs on their older buildings. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. Where water gets in depends a good deal on what the roof is made of and how it’s detailed. Before planning roof work on an older home, find out whether it is listed or in a conservation area. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, and councils can also use Article 4 directions to control changes in conservation areas.
If you let a flat or house near Overton station, tracing a leak quickly matters when a tenant is living with it. If you live in an older home near Church of St Mary, the leak may come from a chimney, a valley or tired lead rather than the covering itself. Anyone responsible for a site like Overton Church of England Primary School will know that on a building that size, finding the source of a drip means looking well beyond the stain.

How a storm damage roof report works in Southington
Wear and tear is normally excluded from home insurance. So it matters whether the damage came from the storm or from a roof that was already worn. We note signs of each: recent damage alongside any older defects, like nail fatigue on slates or eroded pointing. We give an honest view of what we see. Your insurer then decides how its policy applies. We’re often asked to look into loose or torn flashings and damage from fallen branches or debris, on gutters and fascias, flat roofs and chimney stacks.
Somewhere as small as Southington, older roofs have often been repaired many times. A new leak may be fresh damage or the latest sign of long-term wear, and the difference matters, especially to an insurer. The report says what was seen and what it points to. Older walls and timbers hold water for a long time, so it’s worth finding the cause soon.
How fast the report arrives depends on the package: the Basic Survey within 48 hours, the Standard Survey in 24 to 48 hours and the Premium Survey on the same day.

What a survey costs
A few things affect what a survey costs:
- How complicated the roof is, with its valleys, chimneys and parapets
- Height and safe access
- The type of building, from a house to a block or an office
- The use of thermal imaging or a drone
A small, low roof with good viewpoints takes less time than a tall, complicated one, and the package matters as well. We will give you the figure before anything is booked.
Helping us price your survey
A few details help us recommend the right survey and price. When you get in touch, it’s useful to mention:
- What made you get in touch
- Any photos you have, taken from ground level or a window
- Where water is showing inside, if it is
- The type of building and roof, like pitched or flat
We confirm the price for your roof before booking, so you know the cost up front. Storm damage roof report starts from £150, including VAT. To book, phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form.
Rented homes, blocks and businesses
With a portfolio of properties, you can book surveys for several addresses. To arrange surveys for several addresses, phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form.
Businesses and commercial landlords can book us too, including offices, shops and units. Larger roofs take longer, and they’re priced for the size.
Roof by roof
Chimney stacks
Flashings around stacks can lift in strong winds. We photograph any we find.
Clay and concrete tiles
Older tiles held only by nibs, without nails or clips, can lift more easily. We record what we can see of the fixings.
Leave it or get it looked at?
A few slipped slates can soon lead to wet timbers. Acting quickly normally means less damage overall. In a place like Southington, a barn or garage roof left to fail puts whatever is inside at risk. A quick look before winter can save a lot.
Prices start from £150, inc. VAT, for a Basic Survey. Standard is from £250 and Premium from £400, both with VAT included. You will know the price for the job before booking.

Your questions about storm damage roof reports in Southington
Is Southington within the area you cover?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. Our area covers London and the South East. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when booking.
Is my home in Southington listed or in a conservation area?
The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. It is worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.
Will my insurer pay for an old roof?
Wear and tear is not typically covered. We describe what looks like fresh storm damage and what looks older. The claim decision is your insurer’s.
Does this replace a RICS home survey?
No. Our survey is a roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey of the whole building. It focuses on the roof and can sit alongside a RICS survey.
Will you go up on the roof?
Not unless it’s safe. Safe viewpoints, the loft space and a drone where applicable cover most of what’s needed, and anything out of sight is recorded in the report.
Do you use drones?
Where it’s applicable and safe, yes. We’re a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID), flying a sub-250g drone. Drone inspection is part of the Drone Roof Survey and the Premium Survey, where applicable.
Can you tell me if my roof has asbestos?
No. Our report may flag materials that could contain asbestos, but only a specialist asbestos surveyor can confirm it. Buildings built or refurbished before 2000 may contain it.
The survey, step by step
You do not need to do much on the day. Show us any stains, drips or problem areas you know about, and we will get on with the inspection. A typical survey takes about one to two hours for most homes, depending on how much of the roof was hit. Cottages and farmhouses around Southington frequently have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints, and anything we can’t see is noted.
- You let us know when the storm was and what damage you’ve seen.
- We view the roof from wherever it can safely be seen, including the loft where there’s access.
- Each area of damage is photographed and described.
- We note the likely cause, including any signs of wear that were there before the storm.
- We send you a written report with photos, ready to give to your insurer.
Preparing for the visit
- Show us where any leaks or stains appear
- Find any records of previous roof work
- Leave side gates unlocked
