Storm damage roof reports in Chalton

How a storm damage roof report works in Chalton

Our storm damage report starts from £150. You get a written report with photos by email. It is not a repair quote and doesn’t include repair costs, so ask a roofer to quote for the work. Your insurer may also send its own loss adjuster. Our report gives you an independent record of the damage and its likely cause. We survey ridges and hips, flashings and gutters and fascias, and common reasons people get in touch are flashings pulled away from walls or stacks and damaged ridges and hips.

In a village or hamlet like Chalton, older cottages and farmhouses often have roofs that have been patched over many years. A new leak may be fresh damage or the latest sign of long-term wear, and the difference matters, particularly to an insurer. We check what can be seen safely and set out what we find. Damp in old walls and timbers is slow to dry, so the sooner the cause is found the better.

With the Standard Survey, you also get moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey goes further, with thermal imaging, drone inspection where it applies, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

Questions from Chalton

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Chalton?

Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.

Is Chalton within the area you cover?

Yes, Chalton is on our map. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one, with the route planned beforehand.

Can you survey a shared roof?

Yes, if the freeholder or managing agent agrees access. On a shared roof we can only inspect the parts we’re allowed to reach.

Do you test for asbestos?

No. Our report may flag materials that could contain asbestos, but only a specialist asbestos surveyor can confirm it. Buildings built or refurbished before 2000 may contain it.

Are you loss adjusters?

No. We write an independent report, and you decide how to use it. The insurer may send a loss adjuster of its own.

What wind speed counts as a storm?

There is no single figure. Many policies treat gusts of about 55 mph as storm conditions, but it varies. Check your policy wording.

Is it the same as a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey?

No. We are experienced roof surveyors, and our survey covers the roof rather than the whole building. If you need a full building survey, you will need a RICS survey as well.

How it works

Every visit follows the same pattern: we listen to what’s been worrying you, look at the roof from every safe viewpoint, photograph what we find and make notes for the report. It usually takes an hour or two at a house, and longer if the damage is spread across a large roof. Somewhere like Chalton needs a little journey planning: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. The roof is looked at from the ground, from windows, from the loft where there’s safe access and from the roof where it is safe.

  1. First we go through when the storm hit and what you’ve noticed.
  2. We look at the roof from wherever it is safe.
  3. Each area of damage is photographed and described.
  4. The report notes whether the damage fits a storm, older wear or both.
  5. You get a written report to pass to your insurer.

Preparing for the visit

  • For a flat or shared roof, check access with the building owner or managing agent
  • Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed
  • Point out any leaks or damp patches

Advice

Storm damage roof reports around Chalton

Some Hampshire villages still have thatched roofs. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. Different coverings let water in at different points, which shapes where the search starts. About 3.2 miles east lies Uppark, a reminder of how long the area around Chalton has been built on. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters.

For landlords with property near Rowlands Castle station, tracing a leak quickly matters when a tenant is living with it. Homes near green spaces such as Ditcham Park can get more leaves in their gutters in autumn, and blocked gutters overflow and soak walls. Take an older house close to Church of St Michael: water on an older roof tends to find its way in at the lead, the valleys or the chimney.

Chalton is about 3 miles north-east of Horndean, in Hampshire. Chalton is part of the area we cover and the surrounding area as part of our work across London and South East England. Our Hampshire coverage includes Chalton. Portsmouth is in our area too.

Landlord and commercial surveys in Chalton

A roof problem in a let property affects your tenants as well as the building. A survey helps you spot issues early and plan the work around your tenants.

Surveys can also be booked by buyers’ agents acting for a client. Reports are emailed, so they’re easy to pass on, photos included.

Useful tips for Chalton property owners

You don’t need to be a roofer to help. What helps most:

  • Record any water damage in rooms and the loft
  • File receipts for anything you pay for
  • Tell your insurer about the damage promptly
  • Photograph the damage safely from below

The report is emailed to you, and you decide what to send to your insurer. We don’t deal with the insurer on your behalf.

Keep gutters and outlets clear so heavy rain can drain away. Overflowing gutters can make storm damage worse.

What a storm damage roof report does not cover

Every survey has limits, and we’d rather be clear about that before you book. Bear these in mind:

  • What your policy covers, which depends on its wording
  • Areas we can’t see safely
  • The work of a loss adjuster appointed by your insurer

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we will tell you. The full list of what we check.

Roof types and parts we check

  • Chimney stacks
  • Flat roofs
  • Slate and tile slopes
  • Gutters and fascias
  • Ridges and hips
  • Flashings

Checking the roof from the ground

Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.

A DIY look is useful, but it isn’t a survey. You will not see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from the ground, and those are details a survey looks at closely.

Why it’s worth a survey now in Chalton

Your policy may say how quickly you need to report damage. Let your insurer know early, and check what your policy asks for. Our report can then add a clear record. Older and listed buildings around Chalton may need consent and matching materials for repairs, so a defect found early gives time to plan the work properly.

Storm damage roof report starts from £150, including VAT. What you pay depends on the size and height of the roof, access and the package you choose.
