Storm damage roof report in Netley Marsh
If your roof has been damaged, stay safe first. Take photos from the ground or from windows, and do not climb onto the roof. If water is coming in, a roofer can put temporary protection in place. Our report records the damage so you have an independent record to give your insurer. Keep receipts for any emergency work. If you are worried about broken or displaced guttering and lead lifted at abutments, we can find out what’s behind it.
For a small place like Netley Marsh, the inspection is the same as anywhere: the journey and access are just planned in advance. It helps to know where the water appears, in what weather, and what you’ve seen outside, along with any repairs done before. If you have photos of the water coming in, they help as well.
Every survey ends with a written report, with photos, emailed to you. It explains the condition of the roof, the defects we found and what we recommend.

How we price storm damage roof reports
Every roof is different, so prices are confirmed before you book. This is what makes a difference:
- The type of building, from a house to a block or an office
- How big the roof is
- How complicated the roof is, with its valleys, chimneys and parapets
- How tall the building is and how easy the roof is to see
Every price we give includes VAT, and the written report is part of the package. Our price is from £150, including VAT. Where your roof sits in the range depends on its size, height and access.
Booking your survey
Here’s what helps us most when you contact us:
- The kind of building and roof involved
- How the loft is reached, if there is one
- Why you want a survey: buying, a leak, a storm or new work
- Any stains, drips or damp patches you’ve seen indoors
When you’re ready to go ahead, ring 07833 053749 or email us. We’ll suggest a package, agree the price and find a date, weekday or weekend.
What we do, step by step
Expect us to ask a few questions before we start, about the roof’s history, any leaks and past repairs. Then the inspection itself takes about 1–2 hours for most homes, depending on how much of the roof was hit. Cottages and farmhouses around Netley Marsh frequently have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints, and anything we cannot see is noted.
- We start with the details: when the storm hit and what damage you can see.
- We inspect the roof from safe viewpoints and from the loft where there is access.
- The damage is recorded with photos, area by area.
- The likely cause is recorded, along with any evidence of older wear.
- The findings are written up with photographs for you to share with your insurer.
Getting ready for the survey
- If it isn’t your property yet, arrange access through the agent

Tips from our surveys
Nothing here needs a ladder. Our suggestions:
- Keep invoices for temporary repairs
- Keep a note of the date of the storm
- Report the damage to your insurer as soon as you can
- Photograph the damage safely from below
If anything in the report is not clear, just ask us. Standard Surveys come with a follow-up consultation, and Premium Surveys with an in-person one.
Ask a tree specialist about branches over the roof. They can damage the roof in high winds.

How the survey changes by roof type
Lead flashings
Flashings with older defects often fail in high winds. Our report separates fresh damage from older wear where we can.
Ridge and hip tiles
The ridge and hips are among the most exposed parts of a roof. We record any that have lifted, cracked or come away.
Netley Marsh roofs and the weather
Netley Marsh is within about 3 miles of the coast, so there’s more wind and more salt in the air than further inland. Wind lifts loose slates, tiles and ridge pieces, and driving rain finds any gap they leave. Older buildings may be listed or sit in a conservation area. To find out, check Historic England’s list and ask the council about conservation areas. In either case, a change of roofing material may need consent.
If you live in an older home near Church of St Matthew, old mortar, worn lead and slipped slates are the usual suspects when water gets in. Anyone responsible for a site like Netley Marsh Church of England Infant School will know that water through a big roof can travel a long way before it drips, so the search covers more than the obvious spot. If you let a flat or house near Ashurst New Forest station, a tenant living with a leak needs the cause found, not just the stain painted over.

Netley Marsh questions
Will you come out to Netley Marsh?
Yes, Netley Marsh is on our map. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house, with the route planned beforehand.
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Netley Marsh?
Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it is worth checking before planning any.
What does a storm damage report cost?
Our reports start from £150. Larger roofs are quoted for their size. Repair costs are not part of the report.
Can you put a tarpaulin over the damage?
Call a roofer for emergency temporary protection. Take photos from ground level first if it is safe. Keep receipts in case your insurer asks for them.
What if the roof was already worn?
Insurers typically exclude wear and tear. We describe what looks like fresh storm damage and what looks older. The claim decision is your insurer’s.
Will you check the loft?
If the survey needs it and the loft space can be reached safely, yes. A clear path to the hatch helps, and if the loft can’t be reached safely, the report says so.
What if my insurer declines the claim?
Start by complaining to the insurer. If it is not resolved, the Financial Ombudsman Service may be able to help. The Ombudsman asks about storm conditions, whether the damage is consistent with a storm and whether the storm was the main cause.
Why it’s worth a survey now in Netley Marsh
A clear, independent record helps you explain the damage to your insurer. It sets out what we found and the likely cause, alongside any photos you took yourself. Older cottages and farmhouses around Netley Marsh can have roof timbers that have been there a very long time, and water through a failed covering can rot timber if it is left.
The cost of a survey depends on the roof: how big it is, how high it is, the number of separate roofs and how it can be reached and seen safely. Prices start from £150, including VAT.
