Storm damage roof reports for homes and businesses in Upper Burgate

Storms tend to find the weak points on a roof. Typical damage includes lost slates and tiles, lifted ridges, loose flashings and torn flat roof coverings. Trees and branches can also hit roofs in a storm. We record the damage on your roof and photograph each part. Any older wear we can see is recorded as well. We are often asked to look into roofs hit by falling trees and damaged pots on the stack, on flat roofs, ridges and hips and slate and tile slopes.

In a village or hamlet like Upper Burgate, older cottages and farmhouses often have roofs that have been patched over many years. A new leak may be fresh damage or the latest sign of long-term wear, which matters if you’re thinking of an insurance claim. The report says what was seen and what it points to. Older walls and timbers hold water for a long time, so it is worth finding the cause soon.

You can share the report with anyone who needs it: a seller or estate agent, an insurer, a roofer, a builder or a managing agent.

DIY checks: what’s safe

What you cannot do safely is get up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and a fall can be serious. That’s where a survey comes in, using safe viewpoints and a drone where applicable.

Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.

For landlords and managing agents

Surveys can also be booked by buyers’ agents acting for a client. Reports are emailed, so they’re easy to pass on, photos included.

Letting agents can arrange access with tenants, at a time agreed ahead of time. We survey on any day of the week, which helps when tenants work during the week.

What we can’t see

This is not a RICS building survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. Other limits to bear in mind:

  • A price for the repairs
  • Acting for you with the insurer
  • How your policy defines a storm

If in doubt, ring 07833 053749 or email us and we will suggest the right survey. The full list of what we check.

Upper Burgate questions

Will you come out to Upper Burgate?

We do. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house, with the route planned beforehand.

How do I find out if my home in Upper Burgate is listed?

You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it’s in a conservation area. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.

Is it the same as a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey?

No. This is a survey of the roof only, and it is not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey. It can sit alongside a RICS survey if you want both.

How experienced are you?

We have been surveying roofs for over 20 years and have completed over 5,000 surveys.

Can you tell me if my roof has asbestos?

No. We don’t sample or test for asbestos. The report may flag materials that could contain asbestos on buildings built or refurbished before 2000, with a recommendation to have a specialist asbestos surveyor check before it’s disturbed.

Can you survey a shared roof?

Yes, once whoever controls the roof agrees access. We check the parts we are given access to, and the report makes that clear.

Do you use drones?

Yes, where it’s applicable. Our sub-250g drone is flown by a CAA-registered operator with a Flyer ID and Operator ID, and the airspace and weather are checked before every flight.

How we price storm damage roof reports

Prices always include VAT. What changes the price is:

  • The height of the building and how the roof can safely be seen
  • Features like valleys, chimneys, dormers and parapets
  • How big the roof is
  • The number of roofs, including extensions and garages

Every price we give includes VAT. Our price is from £150, including VAT. We confirm the price for your survey before booking.

Helping us price your survey

There’s no need for technical words. Just let us know:

  • When you need the report by
  • The type of building and roof, such as pitched or flat
  • Photos of the roof, taken safely from the ground or a window
  • Why you want a survey: buying, a leak, a storm or new work

Surveys can be booked for weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays. To find a date that works for you, ring 07833 053749 or email us.

What we do, step by step

Once we’ve finished looking, we write up our findings in a report with photographs. On timing, it normally takes roughly 1–2 hours at a house, and longer if the damage is spread across a large roof. Somewhere as small as Upper Burgate, access is often the only tricky part. Let us know about outbuildings, past repairs and any leaks you’ve noticed. Weekday and weekend visits are available.

  1. We note the date of the storm and the damage you’ve seen.
  2. The roof is inspected from safe positions.
  3. We record and photograph the damage.
  4. The report notes whether the damage fits a storm, older wear or both.
  5. You get a written report to pass to your insurer.

Before the survey

  • For a flat or shared roof, check access with whoever owns or manages the building
  • Note where any stains or damp appear
  • Keep pets inside or away from the areas we’re looking at

Arrange a survey

If you are buying, it’s useful to book soon after your offer is accepted, so you have the findings in time to act on them before you exchange. For any other survey, just call 07833 053749 or use the contact form when you’re ready.

Advice

Storm damage roof reports in Upper Burgate: local notes

Some Hampshire villages still have thatched roofs. Across the South East, older homes tend to have slate or clay tiles, and many later ones concrete tiles. Each of these roof types has its own typical places for water to get in. Historic houses such as Breamore House, about 1.6 miles north, show how far back building in the area around Upper Burgate goes. Older homes in the wider area often have features worth a closer look, such as lead valleys, tall stacks and roofs that have been patched over the years, and the council can say whether a home is in a conservation area.

The streets around a church such as Woodgreen Methodist Church are frequently among the oldest in a place, and if your house is among the older ones nearby, leaks on older roofs often start at lead flashings, valleys or around old chimney stacks.

Common roof problems in Upper Burgate

Gusts work at anything on a roof that’s loose or exposed. Rain can then blow in where slates or tiles have gone. People usually call us after a storm, once they’ve noticed damage or a leak.

Most people get in touch after spotting something like this:

  • Lead lifted at abutments
  • New damp or leaks inside
  • Lifted or missing ridge and hip tiles
  • Gaps where slates or tiles have gone

For site and facilities teams at buildings such as The Burgate School and Sixth Form, tracing a leak on a big roof starts with where the water appears and works back.

What to check before booking
