What affects the cost of storm damage roof reports

We confirm the price for your roof before you book. These are the things that affect it:

  • Extra roofs, like extensions, dormers or garages
  • How big the roof is
  • House, block, shop or office
  • The height of the building and how the roof can be seen safely

Simple, low roofs take less time to survey than tall or complicated ones, and the package matters as well. The price is always agreed first.

Booking your survey

When you call or email, these details help:

  • The kind of building and roof involved
  • The property’s address and postcode
  • Dates you’re working to, such as exchange
  • Whether there is a loft hatch, a shared roof or tricky access

When you are ready to go ahead, call 07833 053749 or email us. From there it’s a case of choosing a package, agreeing the price and fixing a day, weekday or weekend.

About our storm damage roof report in Burkham

Storms tend to find the weak points on a roof. Typical damage includes lost slates and tiles, lifted ridges, loose flashings and torn flat roof coverings. Trees and branches can also hit roofs in a storm. Our report records what has happened to your roof, with photos. Where we also see signs of older wear, the report records that too. Typical surveys look at broken or displaced guttering and lifted or missing ridge and hip tiles, across slate and tile slopes, ridges and hips and gutters and fascias.

Being in a small place like Burkham makes no difference to how a leak or storm damage is looked at: we simply plan the journey and access ahead. Let us know where the water shows, when it appears and anything you’ve noticed outside, plus any earlier repairs. Photographs of the stain and of the roof from outside are helpful too.

Most points in the report come with a picture, so you can see each defect rather than just read about it. If something couldn’t be seen safely, the report is clear about it.

What we do, step by step

The aim of the visit is simple: to look at the roof as closely as is safe and record what we find. Notes and photographs go into the written report. The visit normally takes an hour or two for a house, though large, tall or awkward roofs take more time. For a village or hamlet like Burkham, the journey is planned beforehand: let us know about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. On the day, we inspect everything that’s safely in view, inside and out.

  1. You let us know when the storm was and what damage you’ve seen.
  2. We inspect the roof from safe viewpoints and from the loft where there’s access.
  3. The damage is recorded with photos, area by area.
  4. The likely cause is recorded, along with any evidence of older wear.
  5. You get a written report you can pass to your insurer.

Before we arrive

  • Leave side gates unlocked
  • Jot down any questions you want answered
  • For flats, make sure roof access has been agreed

What a storm damage roof report looks like in Burkham

Some Hampshire villages still have thatched roofs. Older houses in the South East often have slate or clay tile roofs, while many later estates have concrete tiles. Knowing the roof type helps narrow down where water may be getting in. Historic houses like Hall Place, about 1.9 miles south, show how far back building in the area around Burkham goes. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first.

If you own a rental within reach of Alton station, a clear finding on where water gets in helps you brief a roofer straight away.

What happens if roof problems are left?

With an independent report, you have something specific to show your insurer. It sets out what we found and the likely cause, so you are not relying only on your own photos. Older cottages and farmhouses around Burkham can have roof timbers that have been there a very long time, and water through a failed covering can rot timber if it is left.

One thing that affects the price is the package: from £150 for Basic, £250 for Standard and £400 for Premium, with VAT included. Size, height and access can affect the price too.

Questions from Burkham

How do I find out if my home in Burkham is listed?

The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it’s worth checking before planning any.

Will you come out to Burkham?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. Our area covers London and South East England. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route as you book.

Is it the same as a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey?

No. We look at the roof, not the whole building, and it isn’t a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey. It can sit alongside a RICS survey if you want both.

Is this an asbestos survey?

No. We do not carry out asbestos surveys or testing. We flag materials that could contain asbestos, like cement sheets or soffits on pre-2000 buildings and suggest a specialist asbestos surveyor checks them before any work.

Which days do you carry out surveys?

Surveys run on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. To arrange a date, call 07833 053749 or email us.

Can I challenge a declined storm claim?

Start by complaining to the insurer. The Financial Ombudsman Service may look at it if that does not resolve it. The Ombudsman asks about storm conditions, whether the damage is consistent with a storm and whether the storm was the main cause.

I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?

Yes. Shared roofs just need a little more planning. Tell us about it when booking and we’ll explain what’s needed.

What this survey can’t tell you

To be straight with you, a roof survey has limits:

  • How your policy defines a storm
  • Negotiating a claim settlement
  • Repair costs or quotes for the work

If you’re not sure which survey you need, phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer. What a survey covers and doesn’t.

What we look at

  • Flashings
  • Flat roofs
  • Ridges and hips
  • Slate and tile slopes
  • Chimney stacks
  • Gutters and fascias

Checking the roof from ground level

If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.

You can learn a lot from the ground. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Never climb onto the roof to look.

Different roofs, different checks

Ridge and hip tiles

The ridge and hips are among the most exposed parts of a roof. The survey notes loose, cracked or missing ridge and hip tiles.

Lead flashings

Flashings can lift or pull away from walls and chimneys in strong winds. We record which are loose or damaged.
