FAQs for Burkham

Do you cover Burkham?

Yes. We work right across London and South East England, and Burkham is part of that. Just phone 07833 053749 or send us an email and let us know about the property.

Is Burkham within the area you cover?

Yes, we do. Our area covers London and the South East, from towns to the smallest villages. Longer journeys are simply planned ahead of time.

Can you survey at the weekend?

Surveys can be booked for any day of the week: Monday to Friday, Saturdays and Sundays. Just tell us the days that suit you.

When should I book new roof snagging?

Before the final payment is best, while the roofer is still on hand. If that is passed, book before any defects or warranty period ends.

Will you fly a drone over my roof?

Yes, where it applies and safe. We fly a sub-250g drone and we are a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID). Drone inspection is part of the Drone Roof Survey and the Premium Survey, where it applies.

How long have you been surveying roofs?

More than 5,000 surveys over 20+ years, across London and South East England.

Can you settle a dispute with my builder?

No, our role is to record the roof’s condition. Any dispute stays between you and your roofer or builder, and you may want legal advice for that.

About our new roof snagging in Burkham

Roof work often leaves debris behind. We look for broken tiles, offcuts and nails left in gutters and on lower roofs along with any damage to other parts of the property. Each item is photographed. Debris left in gutters and valleys can block them and damage to lower roofs can let water through. Finding these early makes them easier to raise. We survey loft conversions and dormers, flashings and valleys and replacement roofs, and common reasons people get in touch are offcuts and broken tiles left behind and loose or badly finished ridge tiles.

Being in a small place like Burkham makes no difference to the inspection itself: it just means planning the journey and access beforehand. If there are outbuildings with roofs you want checked, mention them when booking. Buyers and owners of new roofs get the same approach as anywhere. Weekday and weekend visits are both available.

Every survey ends with a written report, with photos, emailed to you. It sets out the condition of the new roof, any defects and our written recommendations.

For landlords and managing agents

If you own several properties, you can book surveys for several addresses. To discuss a number of properties, phone 07833 053749 or email us with the addresses.

Letting agents frequently book on a landlord’s behalf, with the report sent to whoever needs it. We agree a time with the tenant beforehand.

Buying a home or a new roof in Burkham

With Hall Place about 1.9 miles south, Burkham sits in an area with a long building history. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material. A number of Hampshire villages keep thatched roofs on their older buildings. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. Each material has its own typical faults, which is what a buyer or the owner of a new roof needs to know about.

Burkham is about 4 miles north-west of Alton, in Hampshire. We cover Burkham and the rest of Hampshire, as part of our work across London and the South East. Burkham is one of the places in Hampshire we cover. You can also see our page for Reading.

What happens on the day

The visit typically starts outside and finishes in the loft: first the slopes, edges and gutters from every safe viewpoint, then the roof space where it can be reached. All told, expect about 1–2 hours at most homes, and longer for a large or complex roof. Older roofs in small places like Burkham can have low, tight loft spaces, so tell us about the loft hatch and any ladder. Only areas that can be reached safely are inspected.

  1. You let us know what work was done and when.
  2. The new coverings and roof edges are inspected as far as can be seen safely.
  3. We look at valleys, flashings, gutters and the underlay at the eaves.
  4. The roof space and the rest of the property are checked for problems.
  5. Snags are listed in a report with photographs.

Before we arrive

  • Keep pets inside or away from the areas we are looking at
  • Find any records of previous roof work
  • Leave a clear route to the loft

Advice

Can I check my roof myself?

After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Take a photo and write down when you saw it.

What you cannot do safely is get up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way. That part is for a survey.

Tips from our surveys

Nothing here needs a ladder. Our suggestions:

  • Look for debris left in gutters from the ground
  • Check before your warranty period ends
  • Keep the contract and invoices together
  • Raise snags in writing with your roofer

Report times depend on the package: within 48 hours for Basic, 24–48 hours for Standard and the same day for Premium. That is worth bearing in mind if a payment date is close.

Keep paperwork for the new roof together. Add the snagging report to it.

Different roofs, different checks

Flashings

Flashings close the gap where the roof meets walls and stacks. We check they’re dressed, fixed and pointed where they can be seen.

Slate roofs

Natural slate can last 100 years or more, so the laying matters. Cracked, slipped or uneven slates are noted.

Common roof problems in Burkham

Vents can be left out, or insulation pushed against the eaves. Poor ventilation can lead to condensation in the loft.

These are some of the problems a survey can pick up:

  • Underlay ending short at the eaves
  • Gutters or fascias damaged during the job
  • Untidy or loose verge details
  • Loose or badly finished ridge tiles

For landlords with property near Alton station, a survey before purchase, or before signing off a new roof, saves surprises once a tenant moves in.
