Storm damage roof report in Newbridge

After a storm, safety comes first. Take photos from ground level or from windows, and don’t climb onto the roof. If water is coming in, a roofer can put temporary protection in place. We then record the damage in a report you can pass to your insurer. Keep receipts for any emergency work. If you’ve noticed stains appearing after strong winds and damaged pots on the stack, we can find out what’s behind it, whatever the roof.

For a small place like Newbridge, the inspection is the same as anywhere: we simply plan the journey and access ahead. It is useful to know where the water appears, in what weather, and what you’ve seen outside, plus any earlier repairs. If you have photographs of the water coming in, they help as well.

Where we can’t see part of the roof, the report says so. That way, it’s clear what was covered and what wasn’t, and what we’d suggest next.

How it works

We photograph the roof as we go, so the report shows exactly what we saw. We take close-ups from wherever is safe, including by drone where it is applicable and the weather allows. A typical visit takes between one and two hours at most homes, or half a day or so for a commercial building. Older roofs in small places like Newbridge can have low, tight loft spaces, so it helps to know whether there’s a loft hatch and how easy it is to reach. We only go where it is safe.

  1. First you give us the date of the storm and what you’ve noticed, inside and out.
  2. We view the roof from wherever it can be seen safely, including the loft where there is access.
  3. The damage is recorded with photographs, area by area.
  4. We note the likely cause, including any signs of wear that were there before the storm.
  5. We send you a written report with photos, ready to give to your insurer.

Before the survey

  • If it isn’t your property yet, arrange access through the agent
  • If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building
  • Leave a clear route to the loft

Leaks and storm damage in Newbridge

The coast is about 5 miles or less from Newbridge, where storms can bring strong gusts off the sea. Many policies treat gusts of about 55 mph as storm conditions, but it varies, and the insurer decides the claim. Thatch survives on some older buildings in Hampshire’s villages. Across the South East, older homes tend to have slate or clay tiles, and many later ones concrete tiles. Each of these roof types has its own typical places for water to get in.

If you own a rental within reach of Ashurst New Forest station, a tenant living with a leak needs the cause found, not just the stain painted over. Landford Manor, about 3.8 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Newbridge. Older roofs around here can leak at old repairs as readily as at original details.

Newbridge is about 3 miles west of Totton, in Hampshire. Roofs in Newbridge get the same thorough look as anywhere else in Hampshire. Newbridge is one of the places in Hampshire we cover for storm damage roof reports. Southampton is in our area too.

Every address in SO40 is within our area for storm damage roof reports. If you’re just outside Newbridge, we cover Copythorne (1 mile south-east), Cadnam (1 mile south), Wittensford (1 mile south-west), Winsor (1 mile south-east) and Bartley (2 miles south-east). We also work in nearby towns such as Winchester (14 miles north-east), Eastleigh (10 miles east), Totton (3 miles east), Chandler's Ford (9 miles east), Hedge End (12 miles east) and Lymington (12 miles south).

What a storm damage roof report doesn’t cover

Before booking, it is worth knowing what a survey won’t do:

  • The work of a loss adjuster appointed by your insurer
  • A price for the repairs
  • The outcome of a claim

If you’re not sure which survey you need, phone 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll give you a straight answer. What our survey covers.

Roof types and parts we check

  • Ridges and hips
  • Chimney stacks
  • Flashings
  • Flat roofs
  • Gutters and fascias
  • Slate and tile slopes

What we’re asked to look at in Newbridge

Falling trees and branches can damage roofs in high winds. We record the damage and where it is, backed up with photos.

Look out for signs like these:

  • Stains appearing after strong winds
  • Ridge tiles that have come loose
  • Loose or torn flashings
  • Slipped or missing slates or tiles

If you look after a building such as Copythorne CofE Infant School, water through a big roof can travel a long way before it drips, so the search covers more than the obvious spot.

Before you book anyone

  • Do they have a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID for drone work?
  • Whether you get a written report with photos
  • What happens after the report arrives
  • How they plan to inspect the roof safely

What’s in a roof survey

Newbridge: your questions answered

Is my home in Newbridge listed or in a conservation area?

For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. It matters most if you’re planning to re-roof in a different material.

Does being near the coast affect roofs in Newbridge?

It can do. Within about 5 miles of the sea, as Newbridge is, metal fixings wear faster and gales find any loose ridge or slate.

Is it the same as a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey?

No. Our survey is a roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey of the whole building. It focuses on the roof and can sit alongside a RICS survey.

How long is the visit?

It normally takes an hour or two on an ordinary house, though large, tall or awkward roofs take more time. The written report follows by email.

Can I check the roof after a storm?

Safely, from the ground or a window. Don’t use a ladder or go onto the roof. With binoculars, you can see a lot from ground level and we will inspect the rest from safe positions.

Will you fly a drone over my roof?

Yes, where it’s applicable. We hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID and fly a drone under 250g, and the airspace and weather are checked before every flight.

What do I do if water is coming in?

Call a roofer for emergency temporary protection. Take photos from the ground first if it’s safe. Keep receipts in case your insurer asks for them.

Roof by roof

Clay and concrete tiles

Tiles without fixings can move more easily in wind. We record what we can see of the fixings.

Slate roofs

Natural slate can last 100 years or more, but the nails often fail first. The report records whether slipped slates look like storm damage or older wear.

What affects the price in Newbridge

The price reflects the time and kit the roof needs. The main factors are:

  • The size of the roof
  • The shape of the roof and its details
  • Extensions, dormers and garages with roofs of their own
  • Basic, Standard or Premium

Thermal imaging and drone inspection (where it applies) come with the Premium Survey, from £400 including VAT. We’ll tell you which package suits the questions you have.

Getting in touch

A few details help us recommend the right survey and price. When you contact us, let us know:

  • Access details, such as a loft hatch or a shared roof
  • What’s prompted the survey
  • Where water is showing inside, if it is
  • The type of building and roof, such as pitched or flat

Our price is from £150, including VAT. The exact figure depends on the roof and the package, and you can call 07833 053749 or email us to find out.

Why get it checked now?

Once the storm has passed, damage that looked minor can let water in for months. Acting quickly usually means less damage overall. Around Newbridge, older homes often have old roof timbers, where water from a failed roof can cause rot if it’s left.

Price depends partly on the package: from £150 for Basic, £250 for Standard and £400 for Premium, inc. VAT. Size, height and access can affect the price too.
