Storm damage roof reports for homes and businesses in The Frenches

After a storm, it’s useful to have a clear record of what happened to your roof. We photograph the damage, describe it and note whether it fits storm damage, older wear or both. We are not loss adjusters and can’t tell you if your claim will succeed. What you get is an independent view of the roof’s condition. We survey slate and tile slopes, flashings and chimney stacks, and the problems we’re asked to look at most are gutters pulled loose in the wind and ridge tiles that have come loose.

In a village or hamlet like The Frenches, older cottages and farmhouses often have roofs that have been patched over many years. That makes it hard to tell new damage from old wear, which matters if you are thinking of an insurance claim. The report says what was seen and what it points to. Damp in old walls and timbers is slow to dry, so the sooner the cause is found the better.

It is not only a list of defects. It explains what we found, why it matters and what we recommend.

What affects the price in The Frenches

Prices always include VAT. What changes the price is:

  • Any need for thermal images or a drone flight
  • The shape of the roof and its details
  • Commercial roofs and larger buildings
  • How tall the building is and how easy the roof is to see

We offer three survey packages: the Basic Survey from £150, the Standard Survey from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, all including VAT. What your roof costs depends on its size, access and what you want to find out.

Getting in touch

If you can, have these to hand when you get in touch:

  • What made you get in touch
  • When you need the report by
  • Whether there is a loft hatch, a shared roof or tricky access
  • Your postcode, so we can check access and travel

Buyers should book once an offer has been accepted, so there’s time to use the report before exchange. For any other survey, just call 07833 053749 or use the contact form when you are ready.

Roof by roof

Ridge and hip tiles

The ridge and hips are among the most exposed parts of a roof. The survey notes loose, cracked or missing ridge and hip tiles.

Clay and concrete tiles

Strong gusts can lift and break tiles. We record which are damaged and where.

Checking the roof from the ground

Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Take a photo and write down when you saw it, which helps when we check the roof.

If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.

What happens on the day

A survey visit follows a simple order: we hear what you’ve seen, look at the roof from every safe viewpoint, photograph what we find and make notes for the report. Most visits take roughly 1–2 hours on an ordinary house, and more on a big or complicated roof. In a hamlet or village like The Frenches, a postcode doesn’t always lead to the right gate, so a few directions are welcome. The visit itself is the same as anywhere else.

  1. We note the date of the storm and the damage you’ve seen.
  2. The roof is inspected from safe positions.
  3. Each area of damage is photographed and described.
  4. We note the likely cause and any signs of older wear.
  5. You get a written report to pass to your insurer.

Before the survey

  • Keep pets in another room
  • Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed
  • Agree roof access with the managing agent if it’s shared

FAQs for The Frenches

Is my home in The Frenches listed or in a conservation area?

We cannot confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. A change of roofing material may need consent in either case.

Will you come out to The Frenches?

Yes. The Frenches is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We cover the whole of London and South East England. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there as you book.

Can you tell me if my claim will be paid?

We cannot say whether a claim will be paid. The decision rests with your insurer and its policy. What we provide is an independent record of the damage.

Can you survey a shared roof?

Yes. A shared roof needs access agreed first, with the freeholder or managing agent. Mention it when you get in touch and we will explain what’s needed.

Is this a RICS survey?

No. Our survey is a roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey of the whole building. It focuses on the roof, so it sits alongside a building survey rather than replacing it.

What wind speed counts as a storm?

It depends on your policy. Many use gusts of about 55 mph, but each policy sets its own definition. Your policy document will say.

Should I go up on the roof to take photos?

Stay off the roof. Photograph the damage from below or from a window. Note the date and time, and photograph any damage inside.

Tips from our surveys

Here are a few things we’d tell any owner, before and after a survey:

  • Take photos from the ground or a window, never by climbing
  • Note the date and time you first saw the damage
  • Keep invoices for temporary repairs
  • Take photos of stains and damp inside

For repair costs, ask a roofer to quote. They can use our report to see what needs doing.

Have overhanging branches looked at by a tree surgeon. Branches can hit or scrape the roof in a storm.

Landlords, agents and block managers in The Frenches

Shared roofs need a little more planning: access has to be agreed with whoever owns or manages the building. Tell us about it when booking and we will plan the visit with that in mind.

If you own several properties, surveys can be booked for more than one address. To discuss a number of properties, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email with the addresses.

What a storm damage roof report looks like in The Frenches

Thatch survives on some older buildings in Hampshire’s villages. Across the South East, older homes tend to have slate or clay tiles, and many later ones concrete tiles. The covering and its details give the first clues when tracing where water is coming from. With Mottisfont Abbey about 3.1 miles north, The Frenches sits in an area with a long building history. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first.

The streets around a church such as Church of All Saints are often among the oldest in a place, and if your home is one of the older ones nearby, leaks on older roofs often start at lead flashings, valleys or around old chimney stacks. Landlords with a home close to Mottisfont & Dunbridge station may find that a tenant living with a leak needs the cause found, not just the stain painted over.
