Storm damage roof reports for homes and businesses in Portmore

Our storm damage report starts from £150. It is a written report with photos, sent by email. It isn’t a repair quote and does not include repair costs, so ask a roofer to quote for the work. The insurer may still send a loss adjuster of its own. Our report gives you an independent record of the damage and its likely cause. We survey gutters and fascias, chimney stacks and slate and tile slopes, and the problems we are asked to look at most are roofs hit by falling trees and damaged flat roof membrane.

Roofs in small places like Portmore often stand in the open, so storms hit ridges, verges and chimneys hard. Damp in old stone, brick or timber walls is slow to dry out, which makes finding the cause quickly worthwhile. A written record also helps if you need to explain it to anyone else.

Findings are set out part by part, from the coverings down to the gutters, with a note and a photo for each point. You’ll see the good as well as the bad.

What we do, step by step

Every roof is different, but as a rough guide the survey takes between one and two hours on an ordinary house, and more on a big or complicated roof. You are welcome to ask questions while we are there. Older rural homes like those around Portmore can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. Each part is looked at from wherever it can safely be seen, and anything we cannot see is noted.

  1. We start with what you’ve seen and any temporary repairs.
  2. Inside, we look for signs of water in the loft and rooms below.
  3. We view the roof from safe positions.
  4. Storm damage and older wear are recorded separately where we can.
  5. You receive the written report with photos.

Preparing for the visit

  • Tell us about parking before the day
  • Leave a clear route to the loft

Questions from Portmore

Does being near the coast affect roofs in Portmore?

Often, yes. Within about 1 mile of the sea, as Portmore is, metal fixings wear faster and gales find any loose ridge or slate.

Will you come out to Portmore?

Yes, Portmore is covered. We work right across London and South East England, from towns to the smallest villages. Longer journeys are simply planned in advance.

What if the roof was already worn?

Most policies don’t cover wear and tear. Our report records storm damage and any older wear we see, so you know what the roof shows. How the policy applies is up to your insurer.

My storm claim was turned down. What now?

Complain to your insurer first. After that, the Financial Ombudsman Service may be able to look at it. Our report gives you an independent record of the roof, though we cannot predict the outcome.

How long will you be at the property?

Time on site depends on the roof, but most surveys take about one to two hours for most homes, depending on how much of the roof was hit. The written report follows by email.

How many surveys have you done?

We have more than 20 years’ experience and have completed over 5,000 surveys across London and South East England.

Do you test for asbestos?

No. We don’t carry out asbestos surveys or testing. If we see materials that could contain asbestos, such as cement roof sheets or soffits on buildings from before 2000, we flag them, and recommend a specialist asbestos surveyor checks them before they’re disturbed.

Practical tips

A little preparation and a few simple habits help, both for the survey and for the roof itself. Some pointers:

  • Look at what your policy says about wear and tear
  • Record any water damage in rooms and the loft
  • Hold on to fallen pieces of the roof where you can
  • Keep invoices for temporary repairs

Once we have been, the findings are written up with photos. It sets out what is damaged, the likely cause and any signs of older wear. Turnaround is within 48 hours for Basic, 24 to 48 hours for Standard and the same day for Premium.

Keep gutters and outlets clear so heavy rain can drain away. Blocked drainage can add water damage to wind damage.

Wind, rain and roofs in Portmore

Portmore is within about 1 mile of the coast, and being near the sea means more wind and salt than a roof inland would face. Strong wind lifts anything already loose, and driving rain gets in wherever it can, and salt air slowly wears metal fixings. The wider area around Portmore has a long history of building, with Beaulieu Palace House about 4.5 miles north-east. On older houses around here, roofs often carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material.

The streets around a church such as Saint Nicholas Chapel are frequently among the oldest in a place, and if yours is one of the older homes nearby, lead flashings, valleys and old chimneys are typical places for water to get in. Anyone responsible for a site like Southlands School will know that a leak through a large roof is frequently found some distance from where the water shows inside.

Why act early in Portmore

Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Water spilling over the edge can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.

Common roof problems in Portmore

Strong winds lift loose or poorly fixed slates and tiles, ridge pieces and flashings. Driving rain then gets in through the gaps. People usually call us after a storm, once they’ve noticed damage or a leak.

Problems we come across often include:

  • Damaged flat roof membrane
  • New damp or leaks inside
  • Lead lifted at abutments
  • Damaged ridges and hips

A roof leak in a hotel or guest house around Portmore means lost rooms as well as repairs, so it pays to find faults before guests do.
