Mislingford questions
Is Mislingford in the area you cover?
Yes, Mislingford is one of the places we work. Every survey there gets the same written report with photographs.
Is my home in Mislingford listed or in a conservation area?
Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.
How many surveys have you done?
We have completed more than 5,000 surveys, over more than 20 years, and 98% of customers are satisfied.
What if my insurer declines the claim?
Raise it with your insurer first. The Financial Ombudsman Service may look at it if that does not resolve it. The Ombudsman asks about storm conditions, whether the damage is consistent with a storm and whether the storm was the main cause.
How strong does the wind have to be for a storm claim?
It depends on your policy. Many use gusts of about 55 mph, but each policy sets its own definition. Your policy document will say.
Will you deal with the insurance company for me?
No. We write an independent report, and you decide how to use it. The insurer may send a loss adjuster of its own.
Which days do you carry out surveys?
We survey on any day from Monday to Sunday, during the day, which suits people who work during the week. Just say which days work for you.
Storm damage roof report in Mislingford: what you get
Most policies do not cover wear and tear. That makes the difference between storm damage and old wear important. Our report records both: recent damage alongside any older defects, like nail fatigue on slates or eroded pointing. We give an honest view of what we see. How the policy applies is for your insurer to decide. Typical surveys look at gaps where slates or tiles have gone and gutters pulled loose in the wind, on gutters and fascias, flashings and chimney stacks.
In a village or hamlet like Mislingford, older cottages and farmhouses often have roofs that have been patched over many years. A new leak may be fresh damage or the latest sign of long-term wear, and the difference matters, especially to an insurer. The report says what was seen and what it points to. Damp in old walls and timbers is slow to dry, so the sooner the cause is found the better.
You receive the findings by email, easy to pass on to a roofer, an agent or an insurer. Basic reports come within 48 hours, Standard within 24–48 hours and Premium on the day.

Storm damage roof reports around Mislingford
Thatch survives on some older buildings in Hampshire’s villages. Across the South East, older homes tend to have slate or clay tiles, and many later ones concrete tiles. Different coverings let water in at different points, which shapes where the search starts. An older home may be listed, or stand in a conservation area. Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the council can say whether a street is in a conservation area. In either case, a change of roofing material may need consent.
Take a building like Swanmore College of Technology: water through a big roof can travel a long way before it drips, so the search covers more than the obvious spot. Landlords with a home close to Botley station may find that finding the cause of a leak fast keeps a tenant’s home dry and the work focused.

The survey, step by step
A survey visit follows a simple order: we listen to what’s been worrying you, inspect the roof from each safe vantage point, take photographs as we go and make notes for the report. Most visits take about one to two hours at a typical home, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. Older roofs in small places like Mislingford can have low, tight loft spaces, so tell us about the loft hatch and any ladder. Only areas that can be reached safely are inspected.
- We start with what you’ve seen and any temporary repairs.
- Inside, we look for signs of water in the loft and rooms below.
- The roof is inspected from the ground, windows and the roof where it is safe.
- We record fresh damage and older defects.
- You receive the written report with photographs.
Getting ready for the survey
- Dig out any old roof reports or invoices
- Move anything stored under the loft hatch
- Note where any stains or damp appear

Tips from our surveys
These tips come from what we see on roofs every week:
- Take photos of stains and damp inside
- Take photos from ground level or a window, never by climbing
- File receipts for anything you pay for
- Ask a roofer for emergency temporary protection if water is coming in
Once we have been, the findings are written up with photos. It sets out what is damaged, the likely cause and any signs of older wear. Basic reports arrive within 48 hours, Standard reports in 24 to 48 hours and Premium reports the same day.
Keep records of roof work and surveys. They can help show the roof was looked after.
What this survey can’t tell you
To be straight with you, a roof survey has limits:
- What’s beneath slates, tiles or membranes
- Acting for you with the insurer
- The outcome of a claim
If in doubt, ring 07833 053749 or email us and we will point you to the right survey. What a survey covers and doesn’t.
What this survey covers
- Gutters and fascias
- Slate and tile slopes
- Ridges and hips
- Flashings
- Chimney stacks
- Flat roofs
Should I look at the roof myself first?
The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and a fall can be serious. That’s where a survey comes in.
You can learn a lot from the ground. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Please don’t climb up for a closer look.
What affects the cost of storm damage roof reports
Several things affect the price of a survey:
- The package you choose: Basic, Standard or Premium
- How many separate roofs there are, such as extensions, dormers and garages
- Whether thermal imaging or a drone is needed
- The size of the roof
Thermal imaging and drone inspection (where it applies) come with the Premium Survey, which starts from £400, with VAT included. We can help you choose the package that fits what you’d like to know.
What to tell us when you get in touch

- Your timetable, such as an exchange date
- Why you want a survey: buying, a leak, a storm or new work
- The property’s address and postcode
- What kind of property and roof it is
