Leave it or get it looked at?

Before temporary repairs, photograph the damage from ground level if it’s safe. Those photos show the damage as it was. Older cottages and farmhouses around Ellingham can have roof timbers that have been there a very long time, and water through a failed covering can rot timber if it is left.

We offer three survey packages: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, all including VAT. What your roof costs depends on its size, access and what you want to find out.

Why us?

  • Two decades and more of roof surveys
  • A photo-illustrated written report
  • More than 5,000 surveys completed

Storm damage roof reports for homes and businesses in Ellingham

After a storm, it’s useful to have a clear record of what happened to your roof. Our report shows the damage in photos and says whether it looks like storm damage, wear and tear, or a mix. We aren’t loss adjusters, and we can’t say whether a claim will be paid. What we give you is an independent record of the roof. Typical surveys look at damaged gutters and fascias and torn or lifted flat roof coverings, across chimney stacks, flashings and slate and tile slopes.

Roofs in small places like Ellingham often stand in the open, so storms hit ridges, verges and chimneys hard. Damp in old stone, brick or timber walls is slow to dry out, which makes finding the cause quickly worthwhile. A written record also helps if you need to explain it to anyone else.

The report is yours to share with whoever needs it: a seller or estate agent, an insurer, a roofer, a builder or a managing agent.

Storm damage roof reports in Ellingham: local notes

If your home is older, it’s worth knowing whether it is listed or in a conservation area before planning roof work. Listed building consent covers changes to a listed building’s special interest, and an Article 4 direction can bring extra controls in a conservation area. Some Hampshire villages still have thatched roofs. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. Different coverings let water in at different points, which shapes where the search starts.

Anyone responsible for a site like Ringwood School Academy will know that on a building that size, finding the source of a drip means looking well beyond the stain. If you live in an older home near Church of St Mary and All Saints, old mortar, worn lead and slipped slates are the usual suspects when water gets in.

Can I check my roof myself?

During heavy rain, look at the gutters from the ground or a window. Water spilling over the edge can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.

The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery. That part is for a survey.

Before and after the survey

Some practical points come up on survey after survey. They apply to most roofs:

  • Report the damage to your insurer as soon as you can
  • Keep receipts for any emergency work
  • Hold on to fallen pieces of the roof where you can
  • Ask a roofer for emergency temporary protection if water is coming in

If you are unhappy with how your insurer handles the claim, you can complain to them first. If that does not resolve it, the Financial Ombudsman Service may be able to help.

After a storm, look at the roof from the street or garden. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or lifted ridges. Do not go up a ladder to look.

What a survey costs

When we price a survey, we consider:

  • Which survey package you book
  • Commercial roofs and larger buildings
  • Roof area
  • Whether thermal imaging or a drone is needed

Our price is from £150, including VAT. What you pay depends on the size and height of the roof, how it can be seen safely and the package you choose.

Helping us price your survey

When you call or email, these details help:

  • Pictures of the roof from a safe spot, if you have them
  • Access details, such as a loft hatch or a shared roof
  • Why you want a survey: buying, a leak, a storm or new work
  • The style of property, from a terrace to a block

Unsure which package suits your roof? It’s easiest to call 07833 053749 or email us and describe the roof and what’s worrying you. We will explain the options and the price.

Rented homes, blocks and businesses

For a freeholder or residents’ company, a roof report is a sound basis for a maintenance plan.

Surveys can also be booked by buyers’ agents acting for a client. Reports are emailed, so they’re easy to pass on, photos included.

What we do, step by step

Photographs are taken throughout the visit, so you can see in the report what we found and where. We take close-ups from wherever is safe, including by drone where it’s applicable and the weather allows. A typical visit takes about 1–2 hours for most houses, and more on a big or complicated roof. Rural addresses near Ellingham can be hard to find from a postcode alone, so a few directions, or a note of a nearby landmark, help us arrive on time. The visit itself is the same as anywhere else.

  1. We note the date of the storm and the damage you’ve seen.
  2. We check the roof from wherever it is safe.
  3. Each area of damage is photographed and described.
  4. We note the likely cause and any signs of older wear.
  5. You get a written report to pass to your insurer.

How to prepare

  • Move anything stored under the loft hatch
  • Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work
  • If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building

Your questions about storm damage roof reports in Ellingham

Is Ellingham within the area you cover?

Yes. Ellingham is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We survey roofs across London and the South East. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when you book.

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Ellingham?

We can’t confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. A change of roofing material may need consent in either case, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.

Can you put a tarpaulin over the damage?

Emergency cover over a damaged roof should be arranged with a roofer. Take photos from ground level first if it’s safe. Keep receipts in case your insurer asks for them.

How long have you been surveying roofs?

We have been surveying roofs for over 20 years and have completed over 5,000 surveys across London and the South East.

My storm claim was turned down. What now?

The first step is a complaint to your insurer. If you’re still unhappy, you may be able to take it to the Financial Ombudsman Service. An independent report can add to your evidence, but we cannot say how it will turn out.

Do I need to be at home?

Not necessarily. An outside-only look can be arranged beforehand, but the loft and any rooms with damp need someone to let us in.

Will you deal with the insurance company for me?

No. We aren’t loss adjusters and don’t act for you with the insurer. We give you an independent report of the damage, which you can pass to your insurer.
