About our storm damage roof report in Tangley

High winds normally affect the parts of a roof that are already exposed or loose. Typical damage includes lost slates and tiles, lifted ridges, loose flashings and torn flat roof coverings. Trees and branches can also hit roofs in a storm. Our report records what has happened to your roof, with photos. Where we also see signs of older wear, the report records that too. We survey chimney stacks, ridges and hips and flashings, and common reasons people get in touch are damaged gutters and fascias and damage from fallen branches or debris.

For a small place like Tangley, the inspection is the same as anywhere: we simply plan the journey and access ahead. It helps to know where the water appears, in what weather, and what you’ve seen outside, along with any repairs done before. Photos of the stain and of the roof from outside are helpful too.

It isn’t only a list of defects. It explains what we found, why it matters and what we recommend.

What we cannot see

No survey can tell you everything, and we’d rather be clear about that before you book. Keep these in mind:

  • A decision on your insurance claim
  • Your insurer’s view of the claim
  • Estimates of repair costs

If in doubt, call 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will point you to the right survey before booking. The full list of what we check.

Common questions in Tangley

Do you cover smaller places like Tangley?

We do. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one, with the route planned beforehand.

Is Tangley in the area you cover?

Yes, Tangley is within the area we cover. Our area covers London and South East England. You can ring 07833 053749 or send us an email with the address and some details.

How many surveys have you done?

We’ve been surveying roofs for over 20 years and have completed over 5,000 surveys.

Can I challenge a declined storm claim?

Raise it with your insurer first. The Financial Ombudsman Service may look at it if that does not resolve it. The Ombudsman looks at whether there were storm conditions, whether the damage fits a storm and whether the storm was the main cause.

What’s the best way to book?

To arrange a survey, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email with the address, the type of property and what’s prompted the survey. We’ll confirm the price and find a day that suits.

How long does the survey take?

That depends on the size and shape of the roof; most visits take between one and two hours on an ordinary house, or half a day or so for a commercial building. The written report follows by email.

Do you test for asbestos?

No. Asbestos surveys and sampling aren’t something we do. The report may flag materials that could contain asbestos on buildings built or refurbished before 2000, with a recommendation to have a specialist asbestos surveyor check before it’s disturbed.

How the survey works

Where it is relevant and can be reached safely, the loft space is checked as well as the outside. In the loft, the signs we look for are staining, damp, daylight and sagging, as far as the space allows. The whole visit typically takes roughly 1–2 hours for most houses, while a commercial roof takes nearer three to four hours. Cottages and farmhouses around Tangley frequently have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints.

  1. You let us know what happened and whether a roofer has made the roof safe.
  2. We check inside, including the loft where there is access, for water damage.
  3. We view the roof from safe positions.
  4. Storm damage and older wear are recorded separately where we can.
  5. You receive the written report with photos.

How to prepare

  • Find any records of previous roof work
  • Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed
  • Keep pets inside or away from the areas we’re looking at

Advice

Before and after the survey

A few practical points come up again and again on our surveys. They apply to most roofs:

  • Keep fallen slates or tiles as evidence if safe
  • Tell your insurer about the damage promptly
  • Photograph the damage safely from below
  • Keep a note of the date of the storm

If you are unhappy with how your insurer handles the claim, you can complain to them first. After that, you may be able to take it to the Financial Ombudsman Service.

Store invoices and reports for any roof work. They help show the roof was in good order before a storm.

Landlord and commercial surveys in Tangley

Letting agents frequently book on a landlord’s behalf, with the report sent to whoever needs it. Access is agreed with the tenant beforehand.

Roof problems in a rented home affect tenants as well as the building. A survey shows what needs attention, so you can plan the work with less disruption.

Storm damage roof reports in Tangley: local notes

Older buildings may be listed or sit in a conservation area. Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the council can say whether a street is in a conservation area. In either case, a change of roofing material may need consent. A number of Hampshire villages keep thatched roofs on their older buildings. Older houses in the South East often have slate or clay tile roofs, while many later estates have concrete tiles. Each of these roof types has its own typical places for water to get in.

If you live in an older home near Church of St Thomas of Canterbury, lead flashings, valleys and old chimneys are typical places for water to get in. If you let a flat or house near Andover station, a clear finding on where water gets in helps you brief a roofer right away.

Slate roofs

Slates often outlast the nails that hold them. The report records whether slipped slates look like storm damage or older wear.

Lead flashings

Flashings with older defects often fail in high winds. We record what looks recent and what looks older.
