Storm damage roof reports for homes and businesses in Grafham
What counts as a storm depends on your policy, though many use gusts of about 55 mph. Your policy document sets out its own definition. We do not decide whether a storm met that test. Our part is recording the damage to your roof and its likely cause. The report includes photos of each area of damage, and you decide what to send. Insurers decide claims on their own policy wording. We survey flat roofs, chimney stacks and gutters and fascias, and common reasons people get in touch are lead lifted at abutments and slipped or missing slates or tiles.
Many homes in small places like Grafham face open ground, where storms hit ridges, verges and chimneys hardest. Damp in old stone, brick or timber walls is slow to dry out, which makes finding the cause quickly worthwhile. A record with photographs is useful if you need to show the damage to anyone else.
It is not only a list of defects. It explains what we found, why it matters and what we recommend.

How the survey changes by roof type
Flat roof coverings
Wind can lift the edges of flat roof coverings or tear them. We record any damage and where it is.
Lead flashings
When flashings lift, water can get behind them. We note where this has happened and any damp inside.
What a storm damage roof report looks like in Grafham
The wider area around Grafham has a long history of building, with Chilworth Manor about 3.8 miles north. If your home is one of the older ones, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material. In Surrey, older roofs are often handmade clay tile, with tile-hanging on many upper walls. Some old buildings in Surrey and Sussex have Horsham stone slab roofs. Different coverings let water in at different points, which shapes where the search starts.
Homes near green spaces like Cucknell's Wood can get more leaves in their gutters in autumn, and blocked gutters overflow and soak walls. If you let a flat or house near Chilworth station, a tenant living with a leak needs the cause found, not just the stain painted over.

Tips from our surveys
Here are a few things we’d tell any owner, before and after a survey:
- Record any water damage in rooms and the loft
- Keep any slates, tiles or debris that fall, if it is safe to do so
- Don’t go onto the roof to take pictures
- Ask a roofer for emergency temporary protection if water is coming in
If you are unhappy with how your insurer handles the claim, you can complain to them first. If that doesn’t resolve it, the Financial Ombudsman Service may be able to help.
Store invoices and reports for any roof work. They help show the roof was in good order before a storm.
Landlord and commercial surveys in Grafham
We survey roofs for letting agents and landlords as well as householders. The report gives you a dated record of the roof, with photographs.
For blocks of flats, a roof survey helps managing agents and residents’ management companies plan ahead. The report sets out what needs attention now and what can wait, which helps when budgeting.
What affects the price in Grafham
Several things affect the price of a survey:
- The package you choose: Basic, Standard or Premium
- The height of the building and how the roof can be seen safely
- How many separate roofs there are, such as extensions, dormers and garages
- How big the roof is
The Premium Survey includes thermal imaging and drone inspection where it applies, from £400 with VAT included. We’ll tell you which package suits the questions you have.
Helping us price your survey
If you can, have these to hand when you get in touch:
- Photos of the roof, taken safely from the ground or a window
- The reason for the survey, like buying, a leak or storm damage
- Where any leaks, stains or damp patches show inside
- The type of building and roof, such as pitched or flat
Our price is from £150, including VAT. What you pay depends on the roof’s size, access and the package, so call 07833 053749 or drop us an email with the details.

Your questions about storm damage roof reports in Grafham
Do you cover smaller places like Grafham?
We do. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house, with the route planned beforehand.
How do I find out if my home in Grafham is listed?
For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.
Is wear and tear covered by insurance?
Most policies don’t cover wear and tear. We note both storm damage and older defects, so it’s clear what we found. Your insurer decides how its policy applies.
How are storm damage reports priced?
Prices start from £150, including VAT. Bigger roofs are quoted on size and access. It does not include repair costs, so you will need a roofer’s quote for those.
Which days do you carry out surveys?
Visits run seven days a week in the daytime. Just say which days work for you.
Do you climb onto every roof?
Not always. Safety comes first, and fragile or steep roofs cannot always be walked on. We use safe viewpoints, the roof space and a drone where applicable.
How experienced are you?
We have completed more than 5,000 surveys, over more than 20 years, with 98% customer satisfaction.
When to book a survey in Grafham
Roofs that were already worn are more likely to suffer in a storm. Corroded nails on slate roofs, worn mortar on ridges and old flashings can all give way. Our report notes both the storm damage and any older wear.
Most people get in touch when they’ve noticed something like this:
- Flat roof edges peeled back
- Slipped or missing slates or tiles
- Loose or broken chimney pots and cowls
- Holes or cracks caused by debris
For an older house near a landmark like Church of St Andrew, lead flashings, valleys and old chimneys are typical places for water to get in.
Before booking any roof surveyor
- How long they’ve been surveying roofs
- How soon the report will arrive
- What happens after the report arrives
- Do they have a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID for drone work?
How the survey works
Photographs are taken throughout the visit, so the report shows exactly what we saw. Close-ups come from the safest viewpoint available. Most surveys take between one and two hours for a house, and longer for a large or complex roof. Cottages and farmhouses around Grafham frequently have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints, and anything we can’t see is noted.
- First we go through when the storm hit and what you’ve noticed.
- The roof is inspected from safe positions.
- We record and photograph the damage.
- The report notes whether the damage fits a storm, older wear or both.
- You get a written report to pass to your insurer.
Preparing for the visit
- If it is not your property yet, arrange access through the agent
- Keep pets inside or away from the areas we are looking at
- Dig out any old roof reports or invoices
