About our storm damage roof report in Hardwick

High winds usually affect the parts of a roof that are already exposed or loose. Slates and tiles slip or blow off, ridge and hip tiles lift, flashings pull away and flat roof coverings can tear. Falling branches can cause damage too. Our report records what has happened to your roof, with photos. Any older wear we can see is recorded as well. We survey chimney stacks, ridges and hips and flat roofs, and common reasons people get in touch are cowls or aerials dislodged in the wind and flat roof edges peeled back.

Many homes in small places like Hardwick face open ground, where storms hit ridges, verges and chimneys hardest. Once water gets into older walls, it takes a long time to dry, so it pays to find the cause quickly. A written record also helps if you need to explain it to anyone else.

We write the report in plain English, so you do not need to be a roofer to follow it. Photos show what each point refers to, with the urgent items made clear.

Before and after the survey

You do not need to be a roofer to help. What helps most:

  • Write down when the storm hit and when you noticed damage
  • Record any water damage in rooms and the loft
  • Photograph the damage safely from below
  • Tell your insurer about the damage promptly

You will need a roofer’s quote for the repairs. The report gives them a clear list of the damage.

A well-maintained roof stands up to storms better. Have loose slates, tiles and flashings seen to promptly.

Signs you need a storm damage roof report in Hardwick

Landlords and building managers often need a written record after a storm. The report can be shared with owners, tenants or insurers.

A survey can pick up problems such as:

  • Lifted or missing ridge and hip tiles
  • Loose or broken chimney pots and cowls
  • Holes or cracks caused by debris
  • Slipped or missing slates or tiles

Take an older house close to Church of St Mary: the leak may come from a chimney, a valley or tired lead rather than the covering itself.

Choosing a roof surveyor

Questions from Hardwick

Do you carry out roof surveys in Hardwick?

We do. Every survey there gets the same written report with photographs, and visits run on weekdays and weekends.

Is Hardwick within the area you cover?

Yes, Hardwick is on our map. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house.

Do you need to get into the loft?

Typically, if there’s one and it can be reached safely. From inside, the underside of the roof frequently shows damp, staining or daylight that cannot be seen from outside.

How many surveys have you done?

We have been surveying roofs for over 20 years and have completed over 5,000 surveys.

Will you fly a drone over my roof?

Yes, where it is applicable. We hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID and fly a drone under 250g, and every flight depends on the airspace and the weather.

Which days do you carry out surveys?

Surveys run on any day of the week. To arrange a date, call 07833 053749 or email us.

What’s the best way to book?

To book, phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the address, the type of property and what’s prompted the survey. We will confirm the price and find a day that suits.

How the survey works

On the day, we start by asking what you’ve noticed and what you want to find out. We then inspect everything that can safely be seen, from ground level, from windows, in the roof space and by drone where applicable. Most surveys take roughly 1–2 hours for a house, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. For a village or hamlet like Hardwick, the journey is planned beforehand: tell us about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. The roof is looked at from ground level, from windows, from the loft where there is safe access and from the roof where it is safe.

  1. You let us know what happened and whether a roofer has made the roof safe.
  2. We check inside, including the loft where there is access, for water damage.
  3. We view the roof from safe positions.
  4. We record fresh damage and older defects.
  5. You receive the written report with photographs.

Getting ready for the survey

  • Show us where any leaks or stains appear
  • Buyers: confirm access with the estate agent or seller
  • Agree roof access with the managing agent if it is shared

DIY checks: what’s safe

Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Photograph them and note the date, as it helps a surveyor trace the cause.

It helps to keep a record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Send it with your enquiry and it will help the survey.

Leave it or get it looked at?

Your policy may say how quickly you need to report damage. Let your insurer know early, and check what your policy asks for. An independent report can follow. For older village homes like those around Hardwick, the right replacement materials aren’t always easy to find quickly. Spotting a problem early leaves room to find them.

Hardwick roofs and the weather

Before planning roof work on an older home, find out whether it’s listed or in a conservation area. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, and councils can also use Article 4 directions to control changes in conservation areas. Older buildings in west Oxfordshire frequently have Cotswold stone slate roofs, and some Oxfordshire villages still have thatch. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. Where water gets in depends a good deal on what the roof is made of and how it’s detailed.
