About our storm damage roof report in Hatfield Hyde

When a storm has damaged your roof, a written record can help you explain it to your insurer. We photograph the damage, describe it and note whether it fits storm damage, older wear or both. We’re not loss adjusters and cannot tell you if your claim will succeed. What we give you is an independent record of the roof. We are often asked to look into cowls or aerials dislodged in the wind and ridge tiles that have come loose, across gutters and fascias, ridges and hips and flashings.

Older cottages and houses around Hatfield Hyde may have roofs with little or no underlay. Without a sound underlay, any gap in the coverings lets water straight through. Finding where it gets in, and whether it is old wear or new damage, decides what comes next. Wet battens and insulation in the loft are frequently the first clue.

It is not only a list of defects. It explains what we found, why it matters and what we recommend.

Checking the roof from ground level

You can learn a lot from the ground. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Never climb onto the roof to look.

What you can’t do safely is get up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way. That part is for a survey, using safe viewpoints and a drone where it applies.

What we do, step by step

There isn’t much for you to do on the day. Show us any stains, drips or problem areas you know about, and we’ll get on with the inspection. The survey itself takes about one to two hours at a typical home, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. Parking around Hatfield Hyde is typically easier than in a town centre, but mention lanes, gates or long drives. On bungalows and lower roofs, much can be seen from ground level, with the loft showing the underside.

  1. First you give us the date of the storm and what you’ve noticed, inside and out.
  2. The roof is looked at from ground level, from windows and from the loft space where it’s safe.
  3. We photograph and record every area of damage we can see.
  4. We check whether the damage fits storm damage, older wear or both.
  5. We send you a written report with photos, ready to give to your insurer.

Preparing for the visit

  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Check we can get to the back of the property
  • Keep pets out of the way during the survey

Common questions in Hatfield Hyde

Is Hatfield Hyde within the area you cover?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We cover the whole of London and South East England. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when booking.

Is my home in Hatfield Hyde listed or in a conservation area?

Your council is the best source, with Historic England’s list for listed buildings. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.

Is it the same as a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey?

No. Our survey is a roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey of the whole building. It focuses on the roof and can sit alongside a RICS survey.

Will my insurer pay out if I get a storm damage report?

That’s not something we can promise. Insurers decide claims on their own policy wording. What we provide is an independent record of the damage.

Are you loss adjusters?

No. Our report is an independent record for you to use. The insurer may send a loss adjuster of its own.

Can I challenge a declined storm claim?

Start by complaining to the insurer. If it isn’t resolved, the Financial Ombudsman Service may be able to help. The Ombudsman asks about storm conditions, whether the damage is consistent with a storm and whether the storm was the main cause.

Will you walk on the roof?

Only if it is safe. We inspect whatever is safely visible: from ground level, from windows and vantage points, from the roof space, from the roof itself where safe and by drone where it applies. The report says if anything couldn’t be seen.

How we price storm damage roof reports

Survey packages start from £150, including VAT. The price for your roof depends on:

  • How big the roof is
  • The type of building, from a house to a block or an office
  • The use of thermal imaging or a drone
  • Features like valleys, chimneys, dormers and parapets

Leaks and storm damage in Hatfield Hyde

Hatfield Hyde is part of Welwyn Garden City, one of England’s garden cities. Its first houses are now over a hundred years old, with later estates and newer homes around them. Older roofs may still have their original coverings, with fixings and underlay that have done a long stint. With Hatfield House about 1.7 miles south-west, Hatfield Hyde sits in an area with a long building history. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first.

Landlords with a home close to Welwyn Garden City station may find that a tenant living with a leak needs the cause found, not just the stain painted over. If you run a business near Howard Centre, water through a ceiling can damage stock and close a sales floor, so the source needs finding fast. Take a building like Creswick Primary & Nursery School: tracing a leak on a big roof starts with where the water appears and works back.

Hatfield Hyde is about 1 mile south of Welwyn Garden City, in Hertfordshire. Roofs in Hatfield Hyde get the same thorough look as anywhere else in Hertfordshire. Our Hertfordshire coverage includes Hatfield Hyde. Our London page covers surveys nearby.

How the survey changes by roof type

Slate roofs

Natural slate can last 100 years or more, but the nails frequently fail first. The report records whether slipped slates look like storm damage or older wear.

Clay and concrete tiles

A missing tile lets rain reach the underlay. We photograph each gap.

Why it’s worth a survey now in Hatfield Hyde

With an independent report, you have something specific to show your insurer. It sets out what we found and the likely cause, so you’re not relying only on your own photos. On a bungalow or cottage around Hatfield Hyde, the roof sits close to the rooms below, so a small leak can mark a ceiling within a few storms. Finding the cause first saves a second job inside.
