Need a storm damage roof report in Northaw Valley?

Before and after the survey

Getting the most from a storm damage roof report starts before we arrive and carries on afterwards. Some tips:

  • Check your policy for how to report damage
  • Get a roofer to make the roof safe if needed
  • Check how your policy defines a storm
  • Keep any slates, tiles or debris that fall, if it is safe to do so

If you’re unhappy with how your insurer handles the claim, you can complain to them first. If that does not resolve it, the Financial Ombudsman Service may be able to help.

Ask a tree specialist about branches over the roof. Branches can hit or scrape the roof in a storm.

Storm damage roof report in Northaw Valley

Many policies treat gusts of about 55 mph as storm conditions, but it varies by policy. Your policy document sets out its own definition. Whether the weather met it is for your insurer. We record the damage and what seems to have caused it. The report includes photographs of each area of damage, and you decide what to send. The claim decision rests with your insurer. Typical surveys look at roofs hit by falling trees and gaps where slates or tiles have gone, across ridges and hips, flashings and slate and tile slopes.

Somewhere as small as Northaw Valley, older roofs have often been repaired many times. That makes it hard to tell new damage from old wear, which matters if you are thinking of an insurance claim. We look at what can safely be seen and set out what we find. Damp in old walls and timbers is slow to dry, so the sooner the cause is found the better.

Every survey ends with a written report, with photographs, emailed to you. It explains the condition of the roof, the defects we found and what we recommend.

The survey, step by step

We photograph the roof as we go, so you can see in the report what we found and where. We take close-ups from wherever is safe. Most surveys take about 1–2 hours at a house, and longer if the damage is spread across a large roof. Around Northaw Valley, older homes can have small or awkward roof spaces, so it helps to know whether there’s a loft hatch and how easy it is to reach. We only go where it is safe.

  1. We start with what you’ve seen and any temporary repairs.
  2. Inside, we look for signs of water in the loft and rooms below.
  3. The roof is inspected from the ground, windows and the roof where it is safe.
  4. We record fresh damage and older defects.
  5. The report, with photos, is emailed to you.

Leaks and storm damage in Northaw Valley

With Wyllyotts Manor about 2.4 miles west, Northaw Valley sits in an area with a long building history. If you own one of the older houses, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material. Older houses in the South East often have slate or clay tile roofs, while many later estates have concrete tiles, and flat-roofed additions turn up almost everywhere. Knowing the roof type helps narrow down where water may be getting in.

If you let a flat or house near Crews Hill station, a clear finding on where water gets in helps you brief a roofer right away. If you look after a shop, office or commercial unit, for example near Spires Shopping Centre, finding where water is getting in quickly keeps disruption down. For an older house near a landmark such as Parish Church of St Thomas A Becket, the leak may come from a chimney, a valley or tired lead rather than the covering itself.

Northaw Valley is about 2 miles east of Potters Bar, in Hertfordshire. We survey roofs in Northaw Valley and the rest of Hertfordshire, as part of our work across London and South East England. We cover towns and villages across Hertfordshire. We also survey roofs in London.

What affects the price in Northaw Valley

Prices vary from roof to roof, and it comes down to:

  • House, block, shop or office
  • The roof’s overall size
  • Chimneys, valleys, parapets and other details
  • Extensions, dormers and garages with roofs of their own

One thing that affects the price is the package: from £150 for Basic, £250 for Standard and £400 for Premium, with VAT included. The roof’s size, height and access matter as well.

Booking your survey

You don’t need to know any roofing terms. It is enough to let us know:

  • Where water is showing inside, if it is
  • Any deadline, like an exchange date
  • Any photos you have, taken from the ground or a window
  • Access details, like a loft hatch or a shared roof

What this survey cannot tell you

No survey can tell you everything, and it’s better to know them up front. Bear these in mind:

  • The work of a loss adjuster appointed by your insurer
  • Damage hidden under coverings or inside the structure, without opening up
  • Your insurer’s view of the claim

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we’ll tell you before booking. What a survey covers and doesn’t.

Why get it checked now?

Once the storm has passed, damage that looked minor can let water in for months. Acting quickly normally means less damage overall. Outbuildings and barns around Northaw Valley are easy to forget, but a failed roof there can spoil what’s stored inside. It is worth including them in a survey before a winter does the damage.

The cost of a survey depends on the roof: how big it is, how high it is, the number of separate roofs and how it can be reached and seen safely. Prices start from £150, including VAT.

Common questions in Northaw Valley

Is Northaw Valley within the area you cover?

Yes, we do. We survey roofs across London and South East England, from towns to the smallest villages. The journey is planned ahead, so it helps to know about access.

Do you carry out roof surveys in Northaw Valley?

Yes, Northaw Valley is one of the places we work. The survey and report are the same in Northaw Valley as anywhere else, and visits run on weekdays and weekends.

Do you climb onto every roof?

Only when it’s safe. Safe viewpoints, the loft space and a drone where applicable cover most of what’s needed, and anything out of sight is recorded in the report.

Do you test for asbestos?

No. Asbestos surveys and testing aren’t part of what we do. We flag materials that could contain asbestos, like cement sheets or soffits on pre-2000 buildings and suggest a specialist asbestos surveyor checks them before any work.

How much is a storm damage roof report?

A storm damage report starts from £150. Commercial and larger roofs are quoted on size. Repair costs are not part of the report.

Will you fly a drone over my roof?

Yes, where it’s applicable. Our sub-250g drone is flown by a CAA-registered operator with a Flyer ID and Operator ID, and the airspace and weather are checked before every flight.

How long have you been surveying roofs?

We have completed more than 5,000 surveys, across 20+ years of surveying roofs, with 98% customer satisfaction.

DIY checks: what’s safe

Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Overflowing water can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.

Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Take a photo and write down when you saw it, as it helps a surveyor trace the cause.
