Storm damage roof reports for homes and businesses in St Paul's Walden

If your roof has been damaged, stay safe first. Photograph the damage from the ground or a window, and never climb up. Emergency temporary protection, like covering an opening, is a job for a roofer. Our report records the damage so you have an independent record to give your insurer. Hold on to receipts for anything you pay for. Typical surveys look at broken or displaced guttering and damaged pots on the stack, on flat roofs, chimney stacks and gutters and fascias.

Many homes in small places like St Paul's Walden face open ground, where storms hit ridges, verges and chimneys hardest. Damp in old stone, brick or timber walls is slow to dry out, so it pays to find the cause quickly. A record with photographs is useful if you need to show the damage to anyone else.

Where we cannot see part of the roof, the report says so. That way, it’s clear what was covered and what wasn’t.

How the survey works

You do not need to do much on the day. Show us any stains, drips or problem areas you know about, and we’ll get on with the inspection. The survey itself takes about 1–2 hours on an ordinary house; commercial roofs usually need 3–4 hours. Older rural homes like those around St Paul's Walden can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints, and anything we can’t see is noted.

  1. You tell us what happened and whether a roofer has made the roof safe.
  2. Inside, we look for signs of water in the loft and rooms below.
  3. The roof is inspected from ground level, windows and the roof where it is safe.
  4. We record fresh damage and older defects.
  5. The report, with photos, is emailed to you.

Before we arrive

St Paul's Walden roofs and the weather

In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. Knowing the roof type helps narrow down where water may be getting in. With Knebworth House about 2.4 miles south-east, St Paul's Walden sits in an area with a long building history. Older homes in the wider area often have features worth a closer look, such as lead valleys, tall stacks and roofs that have been patched over the years, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first.

For an older house near a landmark such as All Saints Church, the leak may come from a chimney, a valley or tired lead rather than the covering itself. If you look after a building like St Paul's Walden Primary School, water through a big roof can travel a long way before it drips, so the search covers more than the obvious spot.

Common roof problems in St Paul's Walden

Strong winds lift loose or poorly fixed slates and tiles, ridge pieces and flashings. Rain can then blow in where slates or tiles have gone. Most people book a report soon after a storm, when they’ve seen damage or water has come in.

Here are some of the things we see frequently:

  • Roofs hit by falling trees
  • Damaged pots on the stack
  • Slates and tiles blown off the roof
  • Stains appearing after strong winds

Landlords with a home close to Stevenage station may find that finding the cause of a leak fast keeps a tenant’s home dry and the work focused.

What to expect from a roof survey

Can I check my roof myself?

A DIY look is useful, but it is not a survey. From the ground, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight, and those are details a survey looks at closely.

Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Overflowing water can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.

Common questions in St Paul's Walden

Is St Paul's Walden in the area you cover?

We do. Every survey there gets the same written report with photos, and visits run on weekdays and weekends.

How do I find out if my home in St Paul's Walden is listed?

Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it’s worth checking before planning any.

I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?

Yes, once whoever controls the roof agrees access. On a shared roof we can only inspect the parts we are allowed to reach, and the report makes that clear.

My storm claim was turned down. What now?

Start by complaining to the insurer. The Financial Ombudsman Service may look at it if that doesn’t resolve it. The Ombudsman asks about storm conditions, whether the damage is consistent with a storm and whether the storm was the main cause.

Can I check the roof after a storm?

Safely, from ground level or a window. Don’t use a ladder or go onto the roof. With binoculars, you can see a lot from the ground and we will inspect the rest from safe positions.

Is there a set wind speed for storm damage?

It depends on your policy. Many policies treat gusts of about 55 mph as storm conditions, but it varies. Check your policy wording.

How long will you be at the property?

Expect it to take an hour or two for most homes, depending on how much of the roof was hit. The written report follows by email, on the timescale of your package.

What happens if roof problems are left?

The sooner the damage is recorded, the clearer the evidence. Later weather and temporary repairs can make it harder to see what happened. For older village homes like those around St Paul's Walden, the right replacement materials are not always easy to find quickly. That’s one more reason to find defects before they become urgent.

Practical tips

Small things make a difference. Our tips:

  • Tell your insurer about the damage promptly
  • Note the date and time you first saw the damage
  • Arrange temporary cover with a roofer if rain is getting in
  • Take photos from the ground or a window, never by climbing

For repair costs, ask a roofer to quote. They can use our report to see what needs doing.

Clear gutters and outlets before the stormy months. Overflowing gutters can make storm damage worse.
