Thermal roof survey in Ascott d'Oyley
Flat roofs over extensions, garages, flats and commercial buildings are where thermal imaging often helps most. It can show patterns that point to trapped moisture under the membrane. On pitched roofs, slates and tiles over a ventilated space can hide what’s below, so we combine the camera with an inspection from the loft where there’s safe access. We survey loft conversions, insulated roof spaces and flat roofs, and the problems we’re asked to look at most are cold spots on ceilings under the roof and stains that keep coming back.
In a small place like Ascott d'Oyley, open ground can mean strong wind. Strong wind or a downpour stops a small drone flying, and calm conditions also suit thermal imaging best. We plan the journey, access and timing around the weather. If the day turns windy or wet, the visit can be moved.
What you get is a clear record of the roof on the day we saw it. It is useful straight away, and a good reference for later.

What this survey cannot tell you
Our findings are based on what we can see safely on the day, so some things are outside what a survey can do:
- Whether the deck or roof structure is strong enough
- Readings unaffected by sun, shade or reflections
- An energy rating for the building
If in doubt, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will suggest the right survey. The full list of what we check.
What we look at
- Ceilings below the roof
- Flat roofs
- Loft conversions
- Commercial roofs
- Insulated roof spaces
- Pitched roof slopes
How the survey works
We check the roof from outside and, where it’s relevant and there is safe access, from inside the loft space too. Inside, we look for staining, damp, gaps and signs of movement, as far as the space allows. The whole visit usually takes roughly 1–2 hours at most homes; commercial roofs usually need 3–4 hours. Cottages and farmhouses around Ascott d'Oyley often have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. Each part is looked at from wherever it can safely be seen.
- We start by discussing the roof, any signs of damp and how the weather may affect the images.
- We carry out a visual inspection of the roof from wherever it can safely be seen.
- A thermal camera records how the surface temperature varies across the roof.
- Any patterns of interest are checked with moisture readings where we can reach them.
- You get a report with thermal images, photographs and our recommendations.

Questions from Ascott d'Oyley
Will you come out to Ascott d'Oyley?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We cover the whole of London and South East England. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when you book.
How do I find out if my home in Ascott d'Oyley is listed?
Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.
What happens after the survey?
The report arrives by email. The Standard Survey includes a follow-up consultation, and the Premium Survey an in-person consultation, so you can talk the findings through.
Do I have to be there for the survey?
Someone needs to let us in if we are looking inside or in the loft. Access is agreed with you when booking.
How long is the visit?
It typically takes roughly 1–2 hours on an ordinary house, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. You will then get the report by email, on the timescale of your package.
Does the report include photos?
Yes. Photos are taken throughout the survey, and they go into the written report alongside our recommendations.
Is thermal imaging useful on pitched roofs?
It can be useful, though pitched roofs are usually harder to read. Slates and tiles over a ventilated space can mask what’s below, so we also look from the loft where it’s safe.

Different roofs, different checks
GRP fibreglass roofs
GRP roofs are laid over timber boards, so trapped moisture can affect the deck. The camera can help show where to look.
Loft insulation
Loft insulation is easily disturbed when people store things or run cables. The camera can show where it no longer covers the ceiling.
Drones, thermal imaging and Ascott d'Oyley roofs
With Minster Lovell Hall about 4.3 miles south, Ascott d'Oyley sits in an area with a long building history. If your home is one of the older ones, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof. West Oxfordshire’s older buildings often carry Cotswold stone slates, and a few villages in the county keep their thatch. Slate and clay tile are the usual coverings on older South East houses, with concrete tiles on many later estates. Many roofs like these can’t be judged properly from the pavement, and that’s where a view from above or a thermal image earns its place.

Do you need a thermal roof survey in Ascott d'Oyley?
Some defects simply cannot be seen with the eye. Trapped moisture, missing insulation and hidden heat loss are three examples. A thermal camera adds another way of finding them.
Here are some of the things we see often:
- Heat escaping through the roof
- Damp around chimneys and parapets
- Thin or uneven insulation in the roof
- Cold spots on ceilings under the roof
Take an older house close to Church of the Holy Trinity: older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where close-up aerial shots and thermal images help.
Choosing a roof surveyor
- How long the report takes to arrive
- How they plan to inspect the roof safely
- Do they have a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID for drone work?
