Thermal roof surveys for homes and businesses in Church End

What a thermal camera can show depends a lot on the weather. A sunny day before the survey, a dry roof surface and little wind all help. Rain, a strong wind or heavy cloud can make the images less clear. We will discuss the weather with you when booking, and the report explains how the conditions on the day affected the results. If you’ve noticed damp where roofs meet walls and chimneys and damp patches with no obvious cause, a survey will tell you what’s going on, whatever the roof.

Around Church End, a good many roofs are low enough to see partly from the garden or the street. The parts you cannot see, such as rear slopes, valleys and chimney tops, are where a drone or thermal camera adds detail. The forecast decides the day, as calm, dry conditions suit both. Close-up images often show wear on ridges, verges and flashings that cannot be judged properly from the ground.

How fast the report arrives depends on the package: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day.

Church End: your questions answered

Is Church End within the area you cover?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We cover the whole of London and South East England. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.

Is Church End in the area you cover?

Yes. We survey roofs across London and South East England, and Church End is part of that. You can phone 07833 053749 or send us an email with the address and a few details, and we will talk through which survey suits.

Will you fly a drone over my roof?

Yes, where applicable and safe. We fly a sub-250g drone and we are a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID). It’s included in the Drone Roof Survey and, where it applies, the Premium Survey.

Do you climb onto every roof?

Only if it is safe. We look at everything that can safely be seen: from the ground, from windows, from inside the loft space, from the roof where it’s safe and by drone where it applies. Anything we can’t see is noted in the report.

Is this a RICS survey?

No. We’re experienced roof surveyors, and our survey covers the roof rather than the whole building. If you need a full building survey, you will need a RICS survey as well.

How long is the visit?

Time on site depends on the roof; most visits take about one to two hours for most houses, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. The report is sent afterwards by email.

How fast do I get the report?

Report times are set by the package. Basic: within 48 hours. Standard: 24 to 48 hours. Premium: the same day. Mention any deadline as you book.

Useful tips for Church End property owners

Small things make a difference. Our tips:

  • File the images with your roof records
  • Leave the roof to people with safe access
  • Note where damp appears and after what weather
  • Make sure the loft can be reached safely

Once we’ve been, the thermal images, photos and readings go into a single report. Each image is explained in plain words, with our recommendations. With a Premium Survey, you get the report the same day.

Check loft insulation covers the whole area and hasn’t been disturbed. Gaps often appear after work in the loft.

Common roof problems in Church End

Cold rooms under a roof, or high heating bills, lead some people to ask about heat loss. Gaps in loft insulation and poorly insulated roof areas can show up on the camera, particularly when there’s a clear difference between inside and outside.

A survey makes sense if you’ve noticed:

  • Leaks far from where the stain appears
  • Thin or uneven insulation in the roof
  • Areas losing heat at the eaves and junctions
  • Damp patches with no obvious cause

If you look after a building such as Helena Romanes School and Sixth Form Centre, a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit.

Choosing a roof surveyor

  • Whether any drone flown is registered with the CAA
  • Is there a chance to talk the report through?
  • Whether VAT is in the quoted price
  • What experience they bring

What a roof survey includes

How the survey changes by roof type

Felt and asphalt flat roofs

Built-up felt and asphalt roofs can hide trapped water for a long time. Thermal imaging helps suggest where it is, given suitable conditions on the day.

Single-ply and EPDM roofs

Many single-ply and EPDM roofs sit on insulation boards. Wet boards can show as temperature differences on the images.

What this survey cannot tell you

Every survey has limits, and we’d rather be clear about that before you book. Keep these in mind:

  • A structural engineer’s assessment
  • Insulation values or heat loss calculations
  • Reliable images in rain, strong wind or on a wet roof surface

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we will tell you before booking. The full list of what we check.

Thermal roof surveys in Church End: local notes

Older buildings in Essex often have clay tiles and weatherboarding, with post-war and more recent estates making up much of the newer housing. Older coverings on steep or tall roofs are hard to judge from below, so close-up aerial photos and thermal images help. If your survey includes the drone, the flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first.

If you own one of the older houses in the streets near Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where photos from the air and thermal images help. Horham Hall lies about 4.8 miles north-west, so building around Church End goes back a long way. For older roofs nearby, a look by drone or thermal camera is a hands-off way to check condition.

Church End is about 1 mile north-east of Great Dunmow, in Essex. We survey roofs in Church End and the rest of Essex. Across Essex, we cover Church End and the places around it. Our Chelmsford page covers surveys nearby.

Here we cover the CM6 postcode area for thermal roof surveys. We cover properties on Star Lane, Mill Lane and Barley Lane. We also cover Great Dunmow (1 mile south-west), Little Easton (2 miles north-west), Barnston (2 miles south-east), High Roding (4 miles south-west) and Great Canfield (4 miles south-west). We also work in nearby towns such as Chelmsford (11 miles south-east), Braintree (8 miles east), Harlow (13 miles south-west), Witham (13 miles south-east), Saffron Walden (11 miles north-west) and Halstead (12 miles east).

Around Church End

Locally, jobs take us to homes and businesses close to Dunmow St Mary's Primary School and Angel And Harp Public House and the streets around them. The nearest railway station is Stansted Airport station, roughly 4.5 miles west of the centre. A little further out are Little Easton Moat (1.6 miles west).

What we do, step by step

It helps to start with what’s prompted the survey: buying, a leak, storm damage, new work or just wanting to know where things stand. That way we can focus on what matters to you. Most visits take between one and two hours at a house, including the thermal images, and around 3–4 hours for a commercial roof. In a smaller place like Church End, parking is seldom the issue; lanes, gates and long drives are worth mentioning. On bungalows and lower roofs, much can be seen from ground level, with the loft showing the underside.

  1. We start with the roof, its history and any signs of damp or heat loss.
  2. We check the conditions and note how they may affect the images.
  3. We inspect the roof and take thermal images during the same visit.
  4. Moisture readings are used to check what the camera shows.
  5. The Premium report reaches you the same day, and we go through it with you in person.

How to prepare

  • Move anything stored under the loft hatch
  • Let us know about parking near the property
  • Keep pets in another room

Advice

What you can safely check yourself

Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Water spilling over the edge can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.

You can learn a lot from ground level. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Never climb onto the roof to look.
