Much Hadham Palace, about 1.3 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Green Tye. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters. Where the drone is part of the survey, the flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first.

Thermal roof survey in Green Tye

A thermal imaging roof survey uses a thermal camera to show differences in surface temperature across a roof. Those patterns can point to trapped moisture, missing insulation or heat escaping. The camera doesn’t see water itself, so we check what it shows with moisture readings. Thermal imaging is included in our Premium Survey, from £400. The report also notes the conditions on the day, since they affect what the camera can show. We survey pitched roof slopes, insulated roof spaces and commercial roofs, and the problems we’re asked to look at most are heat escaping through the roof and thin or uneven insulation in the roof.

Villages like Green Tye frequently stand in open country, where wind can be strong. High wind or heavy rain stops a small drone flying, and calm conditions also suit thermal imaging best. The visit is planned around the forecast, along with the journey and access. A change in the forecast can mean moving the visit to another day.

Pictures do a lot of the work in our reports, because a photo of a cracked flashing says more than a paragraph. Anything out of sight on the day is listed as such.

Common questions in Green Tye

Is my home in Green Tye listed or in a conservation area?

We can’t confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. A change of roofing material may need consent in either case.

Do you carry out roof surveys in Green Tye?

Yes, Green Tye is within the area we cover. We cover the whole of London and South East England. You can call 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the address and some details, and we’ll talk through which survey suits.

Can a thermal survey trace a roof leak?

It’s a useful tool for tracing leaks, but not the only one. What it shows depends on the weather and the roof. Where it can’t be pinned down, the report suggests a next step, such as electronic leak detection.

Can you survey at the weekend?

Visits run seven days a week in the daytime. Let us know your preferred days when you book.

Does thermal imaging detect leaks directly?

Thermal imaging shows temperature rather than water. Because wet insulation holds heat for longer, it can show as a different temperature, and moisture readings are used to check it.

Does this replace a RICS home survey?

No. It’s a specialist roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 building survey. It focuses on the roof, so it sits alongside a building survey rather than replacing it.

Can you do a thermal survey in any weather?

Conditions on the day affect the results. A sunny day beforehand, a dry surface and calm air all help. Rain, wind and heavy cloud can weaken the patterns, so we discuss the forecast when booking.

How the survey works

A survey visit follows a simple order: we hear what you’ve seen, inspect the roof from each safe vantage point, take photos as we go and make notes for the report. It normally takes about 1–2 hours for most homes, plus time to check any thermal findings with moisture readings. Older rural homes like those around Green Tye can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. Each part is looked at from wherever it can safely be seen, and anything we can’t see is noted.

  1. We start with the roof, its history and any signs of damp or heat loss.
  2. The weather and surface conditions are recorded.
  3. We inspect the roof and take thermal images during the same visit.
  4. We back up the thermal patterns with moisture readings.
  5. You get the report the same day, with an in-person consultation to follow.

Before the survey

  • Leave a clear route to the loft
  • Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at
  • Keep pets inside or away from the areas we are looking at

Common roof problems in Green Tye

Once a leak has been fixed, people frequently ask whether the roof is still wet. A thermal survey with moisture readings can show whether wet areas remain when the conditions on the day are suitable.

A survey makes sense if you’ve noticed:

  • Missing or slipped insulation
  • Areas of a flat roof that may hold water
  • Leaks far from where the stain appears
  • Damp that repairs haven’t cured

For an older house near a landmark like Church of St Thomas, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where close-up aerial shots and thermal images help.

What to expect from a roof survey

Checking the roof from ground level

Keep a simple record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Send it with your enquiry, as it helps us focus the survey.

The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery, and falls from height are serious. That part is for a survey.

Why act early in Green Tye

Without thermal imaging, the only way to see how far water has spread is often to open up the roof. That helps you and your roofer decide what really needs replacing. Where a roof is exposed, as many are in small places like Green Tye, driving rain gets into any weakness, and damp in older walls is slow to dry out.

Prices quoted always include VAT, and the written report is part of the package. Thermal roof survey starts from £400, including VAT. Size, height and access decide where your roof falls.

Honest limits

Our survey isn’t a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. It also has these limits:

  • Clear results when the conditions on the day are poor
  • An energy rating for the building
  • Structural calculations, which need a structural engineer

If you’re not sure which survey you need, phone 07833 053749 or email us and we will give you a straight answer. What a survey covers and does not.

What this survey covers

  • Loft conversions
  • Ceilings below the roof
  • Flat roofs
  • Pitched roof slopes
  • Insulated roof spaces
  • Commercial roofs

Roof by roof

Pitched slate and tile roofs

Inside the loft space, thermal images can help with damp around stacks, valleys and roof windows. We check any patterns with moisture readings.

Loft insulation

Loft insulation is easily disturbed when people store things or run cables. Thermal images can show where it has been pushed aside.
