Thermal roof survey in Halland

On a flat roof, wet insulation holds heat longer than dry insulation. So a wet patch can show as a warmer or cooler area on the camera. This can give an idea of how far water has travelled beneath the membrane, something you can’t usually tell from the surface. We then check those areas with moisture readings. If you’re worried about heat escaping through the roof and cold spots on ceilings under the roof, a survey will tell you what’s going on, on flat roofs, insulated roof spaces and commercial roofs alike.

In a small place like Halland, open ground can mean strong wind. Strong wind or a downpour stops a small drone flying, and calm conditions also suit thermal imaging best. We plan the journey, access and timing around the weather. If the day turns windy or wet, the visit can be moved.

The report does not just list problems. It explains what we found, why it matters and what we recommend, so you can decide what to do next.

What happens on the day

A survey visit follows a simple order: we listen to what’s been worrying you, look at the roof from every safe viewpoint, take photographs as we go and record our findings for the written report. It normally takes between one and two hours for most homes, plus time to check any thermal findings with moisture readings. Around Halland, older homes can have small or awkward roof spaces, so it helps to know whether there is a loft hatch and how easy it is to reach. We only go where it is safe.

  1. We start by discussing the roof, any signs of damp and how the weather may affect the images.
  2. The roof is inspected visually from safe viewpoints.
  3. Thermal images are taken to show differences in surface temperature.
  4. Areas that look unusual on the camera are checked with moisture readings where possible.
  5. The report sets out the images, what they suggest and what we recommend.

Different roofs, different checks

Loft insulation

Heat loss shows most clearly when it is warm inside and colder outside. We explain in the report how the conditions on the day affected what we saw.

Pitched slate and tile roofs

Inside the loft space, thermal images can help with damp around stacks, valleys and roof windows. Findings are checked with moisture readings.

Common questions in Halland

Do you cover smaller places like Halland?

Yes, we do. We work right across London and the South East, from towns to the smallest villages. The journey is planned ahead, so it’s useful to know about access.

Is Halland in the area you cover?

We do. The survey and report are the same in Halland as anywhere else.

Will I get photos?

Yes. The report includes photos of what we found, so you can see each point for yourself.

Can you inspect my roof with a drone?

Yes, where applicable and safe. We are a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID), flying a sub-250g drone. It’s included in the Drone Roof Survey and, where applicable, the Premium Survey.

Which days do you carry out surveys?

Visits run seven days a week in the daytime. Let us know your preferred days when you book.

What does a thermal roof survey show?

A thermal camera shows differences in surface temperature. The patterns can suggest wet insulation, gaps in insulation or heat escaping. We check what it shows with moisture readings.

Will you walk on the roof?

Only where it is safe to do so. We check everything that can safely be seen: from ground level, from windows, from inside the loft space, from the roof where it’s safe and by drone where it applies. The report says if anything couldn’t be seen.

Honest limits

A survey is a close look at the roof, but it can’t do everything. The main limits are:

  • A formal energy assessment
  • Readings unaffected by sun, shade or reflections
  • The condition of timbers we can’t see

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can phone 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll tell you. What our survey covers.

What we look at

  • Pitched roof slopes
  • Commercial roofs
  • Loft conversions
  • Flat roofs
  • Ceilings below the roof
  • Insulated roof spaces

Should I look at the roof myself first?

A DIY look is useful, but it is not a survey. From ground level, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight.

You can learn a lot from ground level. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Never climb onto the roof to look.

Leave it or get it looked at?

Without thermal imaging, the only way to see how far water has spread is often to open up the roof. That helps you and your roofer decide what really needs replacing. Around Halland, older homes often have old roof timbers, and water through a failed covering can rot timber if it’s left.

Thermal imaging and drone inspection (where it applies) come with the Premium Survey, which starts from £400, inc. VAT. We can help you choose the package that fits what you’d like to know.

Thermal roof surveys around Halland

If the drone is used for your survey, the flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. Handmade clay tiles and tile-hung upper walls are typical of older Sussex houses. Some old buildings in Sussex have Horsham stone slab roofs, and oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses are part of East Sussex’s older buildings. Many roofs like these can’t be judged properly from the pavement, and that’s where a view from above or a thermal image earns its place.

Glyndebourne lies about 4.8 miles south-west, so building around Halland goes back a long way. Older roofs nearby can be steep and hard to see from ground level, and a survey by drone or thermal camera does not touch the roof itself. Anyone responsible for a site like East Hoathly CofE Primary School will know that big roofs are where photos from the air and thermal images show the most at once.
