Thermal roof surveys near Horseman Side

How a thermal roof survey works in Horseman Side

A thermal camera can help when the cause of damp isn’t obvious. Leaks often run along a roof before they appear on a ceiling, and temperature patterns can help us trace where it may have come from. We combine the images with a visual inspection and moisture readings, so the findings do not rely on the camera alone. We are often asked to look into gaps in loft insulation and stains that keep coming back, across ceilings below the roof, loft conversions and insulated roof spaces.

Older buildings in small places like Horseman Side may be listed or in a conservation area. Neither a drone survey nor a thermal survey involves any work on the roof, so it’s a gentle way to see the condition of an old roof, before anyone decides what work it needs. Check with the council before planning any work on a listed building or one in a conservation area.

The report works through the roof section by section, from the coverings down to the gutters, each with a short note and a photo. It records what’s sound as well as what isn’t.

Drones, thermal imaging and Horseman Side roofs

Where the drone is part of the survey, we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before flying. In Essex, older buildings are often clay-tiled, many with weatherboarding, and plenty of post-war and modern estates besides. Steep or complicated roofs are often hard to see from the ground, which is where close-up aerial shots and thermal images help.

Historic houses such as Hill Hall, about 4.2 miles north-west, show how far back building around Horseman Side goes. For older roofs nearby, a look by drone or thermal camera is a hands-off way to check condition. If you live in an older home near Church of St Paul, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from ground level, and that is where a view by drone or thermal camera helps. Anyone responsible for a site like Drapers' Academy will know that a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit.

Questions from Horseman Side

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Horseman Side?

Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. It’s worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.

Do you cover smaller places like Horseman Side?

We do. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one.

What happens next?

The report comes by email, and you decide the next step: use it with a seller, an insurer, a roofer or a managing agent.

Which days do you carry out surveys?

Surveys can be booked for any day of the week: weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Just tell us the days that suit you.

How does a thermal imaging roof survey work?

The images show how warm or cool each part of the surface is. Unusual patterns can point to trapped water, gaps in insulation or heat escaping, and we check them with moisture readings.

Does the report include photos?

Yes, every report has them. Each finding is shown in a picture where possible.

What will the report tell me?

You get our findings in writing, part by part, with photos. The most urgent items are made clear.

For landlords and managing agents

Roof problems in a rented home affect tenants as well as the building. A survey shows what needs attention, so you can plan the work.

If the property is let, the agent or a tenant can let us in. Surveys run seven days a week, which can make access easier.

Why act early in Horseman Side

A poorly insulated roof loses heat year after year. The camera can point to gaps and thin areas in the insulation, so improvements can go where they’re needed. Outbuildings and barns around Horseman Side are easy to forget, but a failed roof there can spoil what’s stored inside. A quick look before winter can save a lot.

We offer three survey packages: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, with VAT included. The price for your roof depends on its size, access and what you need to know.

What you get with us

  • PI and public liability insurance
  • An independent view of the roof
  • Thermal imaging and drones used where they help
  • Visits on any day of the week

What happens on the day

The aim of the visit is simple: to look at the roof as closely as is safe and record what we find. Notes and photos go into the written report. The visit normally takes between one and two hours at a house, including the thermal images, and around 3–4 hours for a commercial roof. Older rural homes like those around Horseman Side can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. Each part is looked at from wherever it can safely be seen, and anything we cannot see is noted.

  1. We go through the roof, the problem and the weather expected on the day.
  2. We look over the roof from wherever it’s safe.
  3. We take thermal images of the roof and of the loft where we can reach it.
  4. We take moisture readings where the images suggest a problem.
  5. The report pairs each thermal image with a photo and explains what it suggests.

Before we arrive

  • Keep pets in another room
  • Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work
  • Leave side gates unlocked

When you need someone else

It helps to know what a survey won’t do before booking:

  • Hidden layers that need to be opened up to check
  • A structural engineer’s assessment
  • Proving moisture from the images alone

If you’re not sure which survey you need, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email and we will give you a straight answer before booking. What a survey covers and doesn’t.

Roof by roof

Loft insulation

Heat loss shows most clearly when it’s warm inside and colder outside. We explain in the report how the conditions on the day affected what we saw.

Pitched slate and tile roofs

On pitched roofs, slates and tiles over a ventilated space can mask what’s happening underneath. We back up what the camera shows with a look in the loft where we can.
