Thermal roof surveys for Ridge homes and businesses

Flying and imaging in Ridge

With Wyllyotts Manor about 2.2 miles east, Ridge sits in an area with a long building history. Older homes in the wider area often have features worth a closer look, such as lead valleys, tall stacks and roofs that have been patched over the years, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first. Across the South East, older homes tend to have slate or clay tiles, and many later ones concrete tiles. A drone or thermal camera adds most on the steep, tall and hidden parts of roofs like these.

If you run a business near Spires Shopping Centre, big, flat commercial roofs are where aerial photos and thermal images help most. If you live in an older home near Church of St Margaret, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from the ground, and that is where a view by drone or thermal camera helps. Take a building like St Giles' CofE Primary School: big roofs are where photos from the air and thermal images show the most at once.

Thermal roof surveys for homes and businesses in Ridge

A thermal survey isn’t a quick fix for every roof problem. Sun, shade, reflective surfaces and wind can all change what the camera shows. That is why we check findings with moisture readings and a close visual inspection. The report is clear about what the images show and what they don’t. Where something cannot be confirmed, we say what would help next. We survey flat roofs, ceilings below the roof and pitched roof slopes, and the problems we’re asked to look at most are wet areas near outlets and upstands and gaps in loft insulation.

Some older homes in villages like Ridge are listed or in a conservation area. Neither a drone survey nor a thermal survey involves any work on the roof, which suits a building where any change needs care. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, so check with the council first.

We write the report in plain English, so you don’t need to be a roofer to follow it. Each point is backed by a photo where possible, and recommendations are put in order of urgency where relevant.

Should I look at the roof myself first?

After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Photograph them and note the date, which helps when we look at the roof.

You can learn a lot from ground level. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Never climb onto the roof to look.

Practical tips

A survey works best with a little help from you, before and after. Some tips:

  • Clear a path to the loft hatch before we arrive
  • Ask us about the forecast if rain is expected
  • Check from ground level or a window, never by climbing
  • Take photos of stains as they appear, so we can compare

You can pass the report to a roofer so they can see where the problem areas seem to be. Each thermal image is matched to a normal photo, so the areas are easy to locate.

Check that loft insulation is laid evenly and hasn’t been pushed aside. Gaps frequently appear after work in the loft.

What we do, step by step

After the inspection, everything we found is written up in a report with photos, sent to you by email. As for time on site, most surveys take between one and two hours for most houses, or half a day or so for a commercial building. In a small place like Ridge, access is normally the main thing to plan. Let us know about outbuildings, past repairs and any leaks you’ve noticed. Weekday and weekend visits are available.

  1. First we go over the roof, the problem you’ve noticed and the conditions forecast for the visit.
  2. The roof is inspected visually from safe viewpoints.
  3. Thermal images are taken to show differences in surface temperature.
  4. We check the patterns that stand out with moisture readings where there’s safe access.
  5. We write up the thermal images alongside ordinary photos and recommendations.

Before we arrive

  • Note where any stains or damp appear
  • Leave side gates unlocked
  • Clear the way to the loft hatch

Advice

How the survey changes by roof type

Parapets, valleys and junctions

Junctions where roofs meet walls, parapets and valleys are common places for water to get in. Thermal imaging can help show damp patterns around them.

Loft insulation

Insulation frequently gets moved during work in the loft. Thermal images can show where it has been pushed aside.

Rented homes, blocks and businesses

Where a roof is shared: we need access agreed with whoever owns or manages the building. Mention it when you contact us and we will plan the survey around it.

We also survey roofs for businesses and commercial landlords, including offices, shops and units. Larger roofs take longer, so they’re priced to suit.

What a thermal roof survey doesn’t cover

A survey is a careful look at the roof, but it cannot do everything. The main limits are:

  • An energy rating for the building
  • Clear results when the conditions on the day are poor
  • Structural calculations, which need a structural engineer

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can ring 07833 053749 or email us and we will tell you before you book. What a survey covers and doesn’t.
