Different roofs, different checks
GRP fibreglass roofs
Water under a GRP roof can reach the timber deck. Thermal imaging can suggest where that may be happening.
Parapets, valleys and junctions
Junctions where roofs meet walls, parapets and valleys are common places for water to get in. The camera can help show damp around these junctions.
Thermal roof survey in Upperton: what you get
Flat roofs over extensions, garages, flats and commercial buildings are where thermal imaging often helps most. It can show patterns that point to trapped moisture under the membrane. On pitched roofs, slates and tiles over a ventilated space can hide what’s below, so we also look from the loft where we can reach it safely. If you’re worried about moisture around outlets and upstands and ceilings that feel colder in places, we can find out what’s behind it.
In smaller places like Upperton, many homes are bungalows and houses with roofs you can partly see from ground level. The parts you can’t see, such as rear slopes, valleys and chimney tops, are where a drone or thermal camera adds detail. The forecast decides the day. Close-up images often show wear on ridges, verges and flashings that cannot be judged properly from the ground.
The report records the roof as we found it on the day. That makes it useful now and a handy reference later.

What we do, step by step
The visit has one job: to see as much of the roof as can safely be seen and record it clearly. Everything we note and photograph goes into the written report. It normally takes between one and two hours at most homes, and longer for a large or complex roof. Some parts of a survey depend on the weather, so a visit to Upperton is booked with the forecast in mind: drone flights and thermal imaging need the right conditions, while a look from ground level and the loft can go ahead in most weather.
- We go through the roof, the problem and the weather expected on the day.
- We look over the roof from wherever it’s safe.
- Thermal images are taken across the roof and, where there is safe access, in the loft.
- We take moisture readings where the images suggest a problem.
- The report pairs each thermal image with a photo and explains what it suggests.
Before we arrive
- If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building
- Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work
- Clear the way to the loft hatch

What a thermal roof survey does not cover
No survey can tell you everything, and it is better to know them up front. Bear these in mind:
- Whether the deck or roof structure is strong enough
- Hidden layers that need to be opened up to check
- Proving moisture from the images alone
If you’re not sure which survey you need, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we’ll give you a straight answer before you book. What our survey covers.
What we look at
- Loft conversions
- Ceilings below the roof
- Insulated roof spaces
- Commercial roofs
- Flat roofs
- Pitched roof slopes
Questions from Upperton
Is Upperton in the area you cover?
We do. Every survey there gets the same written report with photos, and visits run on weekdays and weekends.
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Upperton?
You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it is in a conservation area. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.
How do I arrange a thermal roof survey in Upperton?
Just ring 07833 053749 or email us. We’ll ask a few questions, confirm the price and agree a date, weekday or weekend.
How long have you been surveying roofs?
Over 5,000 surveys so far, across 20+ years of surveying roofs, and 98% of clients are satisfied.
Can you check my loft insulation with a thermal camera?
The camera can point to heat loss and gaps in insulation. The survey is not an energy rating or a heat loss calculation, but the report shows where to look more closely.
When does the report arrive?
The Premium Survey report comes the same day, the Standard within 24–48 hours and the Basic within 48 hours. All of them come by email.
Do you carry professional indemnity insurance?
Our surveys are covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance. Ask if you need details for a managing agent or building owner.
Why get it checked now?
Thermal images can suggest the extent of wet areas without cutting into the roof. It helps when deciding whether to patch an area or replace the roof. With lower homes, common in places like Upperton, there is little between a roof defect and the ceiling, so water can show inside quickly once it gets past the covering. Catching the cause first saves redecorating as well.
Our price is from £400, including VAT. Packages run from Basic at £150 through Standard at £250 to Premium at £400, inc. VAT.

Flying and imaging in Upperton
Upperton is within about 1 mile of the coast, and wind off the sea can be strong. Clear thermal results need a dry roof and little wind after a sunny day, so the date depends on the forecast. Many older homes in Sussex have handmade clay tiles and tile-hung walls. A few old Sussex buildings still carry heavy Horsham stone slabs, and the county’s older buildings include oast houses and Wealden hall houses. Many roofs like these can’t be judged properly from the pavement, and that is where a view from above or a thermal image earns its place.
The streets around a church like Church of St Mary are frequently among the oldest in a place, and if your home is one of the older ones nearby, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement. If you look after a building like St Thomas A Becket Catholic Primary School, thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof. For hotels and guest houses around Upperton, a roof problem found early is far less disruptive than one found by a guest, so it’s worth knowing the roof’s condition.

What affects the cost of thermal roof surveys
The price reflects the time and kit the roof needs. The main factors are:
- Roof area
- Whether it’s a home or a commercial building
- Height and safe access
- The package you choose: Basic, Standard or Premium
What a survey costs comes down to the roof itself: its size, its height, how many sections it has and how safely it can be seen. Thermal roof survey starts from £400, including VAT.
