What happens on the day

Photographs are taken throughout the visit, so the report shows exactly what we saw. Close-ups come from the safest viewpoint available. A typical visit takes roughly 1–2 hours for most homes, plus time to check any thermal findings with moisture readings. Around Whippendell Bottom, older homes can have small or awkward roof spaces, so it helps to know whether there’s a loft hatch and how easy it is to reach. Only areas that can be reached safely are inspected.

  1. We start with the roof, its history and any signs of damp or heat loss.
  2. We check the conditions and note how they may affect the images.
  3. A full inspection and thermal imaging are carried out together.
  4. Moisture readings are used to check what the camera shows.
  5. You get the report the same day, with an in-person consultation to follow.

Preparing for the visit

Advice

How a thermal roof survey works in Whippendell Bottom

Wet insulation under a flat roof covering holds heat for longer than dry. So a wet patch can show as a warmer or cooler area on the camera. This can give an idea of how far water has travelled beneath the membrane, something you can’t normally tell from the surface. Moisture readings are then used to check what the camera suggests. If you’re worried about damp patches with no obvious cause and possible trapped moisture under a flat roof covering, a survey will tell you what’s going on.

Somewhere as small as Whippendell Bottom, older roofs are often steep and partly hidden by trees or outbuildings. Close-up drone photos and thermal images help show what cannot be reached safely. Both the forecast and the airspace are checked first. Older roofs with steep slopes and tall chimneys are where the extra view helps most.

The report records the roof as we found it on the day. That makes it useful now and a handy reference later.

What we cannot see

Without opening up the roof, some things stay hidden, and that sets some limits:

  • A structural engineer’s assessment
  • Proving moisture from the images alone
  • Readings unaffected by sun, shade or reflections

Thermal roof surveys around Whippendell Bottom

Across the South East, older homes tend to have slate or clay tiles, and many later ones concrete tiles, with flat-roofed extensions, dormers and garages common everywhere. Steep or complicated roofs are frequently hard to see from ground level, which is where aerial photos and thermal images help. Where the drone is part of the survey, we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before flying.

Chenies Manor House, about 3.4 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Whippendell Bottom. A drone or thermal survey does not involve any work on the roof, which suits older buildings. Take an older house close to Church of St Paul: tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement. Take a building like Kings Langley School: a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it.

Whippendell Bottom is about 3 miles south of Hemel Hempstead, in Hertfordshire. Whippendell Bottom gets the same service as everywhere else we work: a proper look at whatever is safely visible, photos and a clear written report. Whippendell Bottom is one of the towns and villages in Hertfordshire where we work. There’s also a page for London.

We survey roofs across WD4 for thermal roof surveys and the streets around it. If you’re just outside Whippendell Bottom, we cover Chipperfield (1 mile west), Rucklers Lane (1 mile north-east), Kings Langley (1 mile east), Felden (2 miles north-east) and Nash Mills (2 miles north-east). Before and after the survey

Here are a few things we’d tell any owner:

  • Ask us about the forecast if rain is expected
  • Don’t climb onto the roof to look for leaks yourself
  • Photograph damp patches with the date
  • Clear a path to the loft hatch before we arrive

Many people send the report to roofers, who can then quote for the areas shown. Each thermal image is matched to a normal photo, so the areas are easy to locate.

Keep outlets and gutters clear so water drains off the roof quickly. Less standing water means less chance of it getting under the covering.

Different roofs, different checks

GRP fibreglass roofs

GRP surfaces can be shiny, which affects thermal readings. We allow for reflections and confirm findings with moisture readings.

Single-ply and EPDM roofs

Thin membranes can show patterns from the layers beneath. Reflections from shiny surfaces can affect readings, which we allow for.

Why act early in Whippendell Bottom

A damp patch that keeps coming back usually has a cause that hasn’t been found. Combining the camera with moisture readings can help find it, rather than more guesswork. Around Whippendell Bottom, older homes frequently have old roof timbers, and water through a failed covering can rot timber if it is left.

A small, low roof with good viewpoints takes less time than a tall, complicated one, and the package you pick makes a difference too. We’ll give you the figure before anything is booked.

FAQs for Whippendell Bottom

How do I find out if my home in Whippendell Bottom is listed?

Your council is the best source, with Historic England’s list for listed buildings. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.

Do you cover smaller places like Whippendell Bottom?

We do. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one, with the route planned beforehand.

Will the survey show heat loss through my roof?

It can show temperature patterns that point to missing or thin insulation. The difference is clearest when the building is heated and it’s colder outside. We look from the loft as well, where there is safe access.

Will I get photos?

Yes. Photos are part of every report, so you can see exactly what each finding refers to.

Will you go up on the roof?

Not unless it is safe. Safe viewpoints, the roof space and a drone where it applies cover most of what’s needed.

How long does the survey take?

It normally takes between one and two hours for most houses, while a commercial roof takes nearer three to four hours. The written report follows by email, on the timescale of your package.

Which survey includes thermal imaging?

Our Premium Survey, from £400, includes thermal imaging. You also get an in-person consultation and a 12-month follow-up. Larger commercial roofs are quoted for their size.
