Roof by roof
Single-ply and EPDM roofs
On larger commercial single-ply roofs, thermal imaging can help target moisture readings. It focuses the survey on the areas that matter.
Felt and asphalt flat roofs
Water under felt or asphalt can stay hidden for years. The camera can give clues to where it is sitting, given suitable conditions on the day.
Thermal roof survey in Chipperfield
Our Premium Survey, from £400, brings together a full roof inspection and thermal imaging. You also get a drone inspection where it applies, structural analysis and a report on the same day. An in-person consultation and a 12-month follow-up are included too. To book, just ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email with the address and what you’ve noticed. For big commercial roofs, we quote on size and access. We’re frequently asked to look into damp patches with no obvious cause and gaps in loft insulation, across loft conversions, insulated roof spaces and ceilings below the roof.
Somewhere as small as Chipperfield, older roofs are often steep and partly hidden by trees or outbuildings. A drone and a thermal camera each give a view you can’t get from the ground. Both the forecast and the airspace are checked first, and the journey is planned in advance. Steep slopes and tall chimney stacks are where a close-up view adds the most.
It isn’t only a list of defects. For each finding, it explains what it is, why it matters and what we’d recommend.

What we do, step by step
Where it’s relevant and can be reached safely, the loft space is checked as well as the outside. In the loft, the signs we look for are staining, damp, daylight and sagging. All in, the survey normally takes about one to two hours at a typical home, and more on a big or complicated roof. Older rural homes like those around Chipperfield can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints, and anything we can’t see is noted.
- We go through the roof, the problem and the weather expected on the day.
- We look over the roof from wherever it is safe.
- We take thermal images of the roof and of the loft where we can reach it.
- Patterns that stand out are checked with moisture readings.
- Each image is set beside a normal photo and explained in the report.
How to prepare
- If it is not your property yet, arrange access through the agent
- Clear the way to the loft hatch
- Jot down any questions you want answered

Honest limits
This is not a RICS building survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. Other limits to bear in mind:
- A structural engineer’s assessment
- Readings unaffected by sun, shade or reflections
- Hidden layers that need to be opened up to check

What we check
- Pitched roof slopes
- Flat roofs
- Commercial roofs
- Loft conversions
- Ceilings below the roof
- Insulated roof spaces
Should I look at the roof myself first?
The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery, and a fall can be serious. That part is for a survey, using safe viewpoints and a drone where it applies.
It helps to keep a record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Send it with your enquiry and it will help the survey.

FAQs for Chipperfield
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Chipperfield?
Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.
Is Chipperfield in the area you cover?
Yes, Chipperfield is one of the places we work. The survey and report are the same in Chipperfield as anywhere else.
Is this an asbestos survey?
No. We don’t carry out asbestos surveys or testing. If we see materials that could contain asbestos, like cement roof sheets or soffits on buildings from before 2000, we flag them, and recommend a specialist asbestos surveyor checks them before they’re disturbed.
Can a thermal survey trace a roof leak?
It frequently helps show where to look. Water can travel under a covering before it shows inside, and temperature patterns can help follow it. We combine it with a visual inspection and moisture readings, as the camera alone cannot prove a leak.
Which survey includes thermal imaging?
It’s part of the Premium Survey, from £400. You also get an in-person consultation and a 12-month follow-up. Larger commercial roofs are quoted for their size.
How do I arrange a thermal roof survey in Chipperfield?
Just phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email. We will ask a few questions, confirm the price and agree a date.
Do you use drones?
Where it helps and the rules allow, yes. Our sub-250g drone is flown by a CAA-registered operator with a Flyer ID and Operator ID, and every flight depends on the airspace and the weather.
