How a drone roof survey works in Chipperfield
Drone surveys suit tall houses, blocks of flats, steep roofs and large commercial roofs. They’re useful where walking on the roof could damage it or is not safe, such as old slate, clay tiles or cement sheets. You get close-up views without anyone setting foot on the roof. We check the airspace for your address ahead of the visit. If a drone isn’t the right tool, we will say so. We survey flat roofs on upper floors, large and complex roofs and fragile roofs, and common reasons people get in touch are cracked slates and tiles out of sight from below and worn lead at chimneys and walls.
In a village or hamlet like Chipperfield, roofs can be steep, old and hard to see from the lane. Close-up drone photos and thermal images help show what can’t be reached safely. Weather and airspace are checked before the visit, and the journey is planned beforehand. Steep slopes and tall chimney stacks are where a close-up view adds the most.
The report is written in plain words, so you don’t need to be a roofer to follow it. Photographs show what each point refers to, with the urgent items made clear.

Flying and imaging in Chipperfield
In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile, and flat-roofed additions turn up almost everywhere. Steep or complicated roofs are often hard to see from the ground, which is where aerial photos and thermal images help. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions.
For an older house near a landmark such as Church of St Paul, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image. If you look after a building such as Kings Langley School, thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof. Chenies Manor House lies about 2.9 miles south-west, so building around Chipperfield goes back a long way. Close-up aerial shots and thermal images let an old roof be checked without anyone disturbing it.

Different roofs, different checks
Flat roofs on tall buildings
Outlets, edges and roof plant are common problem areas. They’re all captured in close-up, as far as the flight allows.
Valleys and parapet gutters
A butterfly roof drains to a central valley gutter. It is almost impossible to see from ground level, but it is plain to see from the air.

What affects the price in Chipperfield
Several things affect the price of a survey:
- Which survey package you book
- Whether thermal imaging or a drone is needed
- How big the roof is
- The height of the building and how the roof can safely be seen
A Basic Survey starts from £150, inc. VAT. Standard is from £250 and Premium from £400. You will know the price for your roof before booking.
Helping us price your survey
To price your survey accurately, we will ask about:
- Any photos you have, taken from ground level or a window
- Where any leaks, stains or damp patches show inside
- The style of property, from a terrace to a block
- What made you get in touch
Prices start from £400, including VAT. The exact figure depends on the roof and the package, so ring 07833 053749 or send us an email with the details.
What happens if roof problems are left?
Photographing a roof from the air doesn’t touch it. Nothing is cracked or dislodged by footsteps, so the survey doesn’t create new problems. In a place like Chipperfield, a barn or garage roof left to fail puts whatever is inside at risk. A quick look before winter can save a lot.

Chipperfield questions
Do you cover smaller places like Chipperfield?
Yes. Chipperfield is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. Our area covers London and the South East. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when booking.
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Chipperfield?
You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it’s in a conservation area. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.
Will I get photos?
Yes, every report has them. Each finding is shown in a picture where possible, so you can see what we mean.
Does the weather affect a drone survey?
The flight waits for better weather. A small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or a downpour, so a new date is agreed with you, or look from other safe viewpoints if you’d rather.
How soon will I get the report?
The Premium Survey report comes the same day, the Standard within 24–48 hours and the Basic within 48 hours. Each one is emailed, ready to forward.
Will the drone show what’s under the tiles?
No. The drone sees the roof from outside only. The roof space is checked separately, where there is safe access.
How long have you been surveying roofs?
We have more than 20 years’ experience and have carried out more than 5,000 surveys.
How the survey works
On the day, we begin with a quick chat about the roof and anything that is worrying you. After that, we check everything we can see safely. The survey normally takes about 1–2 hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. Somewhere as small as Chipperfield, access is often the only tricky part. Let us know about outbuildings, past repairs and any leaks you’ve noticed. Weekday and weekend visits are available.
- We start by checking the airspace and any restrictions at your address.
- If permission is needed, we ask for it ahead of the visit.
- We assess the wind, the weather and the surroundings before take-off.
- The drone captures close-up photos of the coverings, chimneys, valleys and gutters.
- We email a written report with the photographs and our recommendations.
Preparing for the visit
- Point out any leaks or damp patches
- Clear the way to the loft hatch
- Buyers: confirm access with the estate agent or seller
Book a survey
If you have photos of the roof, send them over. Pictures from ground level or a window are fine; never climb up to get a better view. To send them or to book, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form.
Advice
What this survey cannot tell you
Our survey is not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. Other limits to bear in mind:
- Flights in a restricted zone without permission
- A flight on a day when the weather isn’t safe
- What’s under the slates, tiles or felt
If in doubt, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will suggest the right survey. The full list of what we check.
