Drone roof surveys for Felden homes and businesses

Checking the roof from the ground

What you can’t do safely is get up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way. That’s where a survey comes in.

Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Photograph them and note the date, which helps when we look at the roof.

Drone roof survey in Felden: what you get

Every flight starts with an airspace check. Near protected airports such as Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and Luton, flight restriction zones mean permission is needed first. Parts of central London have restricted areas too, where NATS permission is needed. If we cannot fly, we use other safe vantage points instead and tell you. Prison sites also have drone restriction zones. We survey chimney stacks, fragile roofs and flat roofs on upper floors, and the problems we are asked to look at most are moss building up on slopes and in gutters and cracked slates and tiles out of sight from below.

Older cottages and houses around Felden may have little insulation, and some have extensions with their own roofs. A thermal image can show where heat is escaping or where moisture may be trapped, and drone photos show the roof surfaces themselves. Anything that looks like moisture is checked with a meter. Results depend on the weather, so the visit is planned around the forecast.

The written findings come by email, easy to pass on to a roofer, an agent or an insurer. Turnaround is within 48 hours for Basic, 24–48 hours for Standard and same day for Premium.

Drones, thermal imaging and Felden roofs

Slate and clay tile are the usual coverings on older South East houses, with concrete tiles on many later estates, with flat-roofed extensions, dormers and garages common everywhere. Where a roof is steep, tall or hard to see from the ground, drone photos and thermal images add detail. High Elms Manor, about 3.4 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Felden. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first.

If you live in an older home near Church of St Mary, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.

What a drone roof survey does not cover

Our findings are based on what we can see safely on the day, so there are some things a survey can’t cover:

  • What’s under the slates, tiles or felt
  • A structural engineer’s report
  • Flights in a restricted zone without permission

If you are not sure which survey you need, phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we will give you a straight answer. The full list of what we check.

What we look at

  • Valleys and parapet gutters
  • Fragile roofs
  • Tall and steep roofs
  • Chimney stacks
  • Large and complex roofs
  • Flat roofs on upper floors

How it works

Photographs are taken throughout the visit, so the report shows exactly what we saw. Close-ups come from the safest viewpoint available, including by drone where it is applicable and the weather allows. Most surveys take an hour or two for a house, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. In a smaller place like Felden, parking is seldom the issue; lanes, gates and long drives are worth mentioning. Low roofs on bungalows can often be seen well from ground level, and the loft shows the rest, while taller roofs may need other vantage points or the drone where it applies.

  1. You give us the address and let us know about the roof.
  2. Any flight restriction at the address is looked at, with permission requested if required.
  3. Before take-off, the wind, the weather and the launch spot are looked at.
  4. Close-up photos are taken of each slope, chimney, valley and gutter, with the drone always in view.
  5. The findings, photos and recommendations reach you by email.

Advice

How the survey changes by roof type

Ridges and hips

Ridges and hips are the most exposed parts of a pitched roof. A drone shows cracked mortar and loose ridge tiles.

Chimney stacks

The top of a stack is usually out of view. A drone gets close to the pots, flaunching, pointing and flashings, so cracks and gaps are clear.

Do you need a drone roof survey in Felden?

Parapet gutters, box gutters and central valleys sit out of sight. Leaves, silt and plant growth build up unseen, until it causes a leak inside. A drone shows them clearly from above.

Look out for signs like these:

  • Chimney tops in poor condition
  • Debris building up in hidden gutters
  • Slates or tiles shifted by high winds
  • Slipped or missing slates on a high roof

Take a building like Nash Mills Church of England Primary School: thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof.

FAQs for Felden

How do I find out if my home in Felden is listed?

Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.

Are there drone restrictions around Felden?

Typically it comes down to two things: the airspace at the address and the weather. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather.

Do you look in the roof space?

Yes, where the survey calls for it and there is safe access. Inside, we look for damp, staining, gaps and sagging, as far as the space allows.

Does the report include photographs?

Yes. Photos are taken throughout the survey, and the report uses them to show each finding alongside our recommendations.

Is Felden in your area?

Yes. We survey roofs in Felden and the rest of Hertfordshire, as part of our work across London and South East England. To book, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email.

Can you survey in bad weather?

It depends on the weather and the survey. Strong wind or heavy rain can make access unsafe and ground a drone, so we’d move the date with you.

Do you carry professional indemnity insurance?

Professional indemnity and public liability insurance cover our surveys. Ask if you need details for a managing agent or building owner.
