How a drone roof survey works in Boxmoor
Before any flight, we check the airspace. Near protected airports like Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and Luton, flight restriction zones mean permission is needed first. Parts of central London have restricted areas too, where NATS permission is needed. If permission isn’t given, we inspect by other means and tell you. Prisons have their own drone restriction zones too. Typical surveys look at blistered or cracked flat roof coverings and chimney tops in poor condition, on tall and steep roofs, chimney stacks and valleys and parapet gutters.
Around Boxmoor, plenty of roofs are low enough to see partly from the garden or the street. Chimney tops, valleys and rear slopes are where close-up or thermal images help most. Both depend on the weather on the day, as calm, dry conditions suit both. Even so, a close-up image often shows wear on ridges and flashings that a view from the ground misses.
The report works through the roof section by section, from the main slopes down to the gutters and outlets. You’ll see the good as well as the bad.

Leave it or get it looked at?
On a tall building, problems are often found only when water comes in. By that stage the damage has spread inside. Looking from above picks up the early signs. Around Boxmoor, leaves and moss in gutters lead to overflowing water and damp walls, especially where trees overhang. Dealing with the cause is simple; drying out a wall is not.
One thing that affects the price is the package: from £150 for Basic, £250 for Standard and £400 for Premium, with VAT included. Size, height and access can affect the price too.

How the survey works
Photographs are taken throughout the visit, so you can see in the report what we found and where. We take close-ups from wherever is safe. Most surveys take between one and two hours for most houses, and more on a big or complicated roof. With a bit of garden around a house, as there often is around Boxmoor, the roof can be viewed from several angles. Let us know if any side is fenced off or hard to reach. The loft, where there’s safe access, completes the picture.
- First, we check whether a drone is the right tool.
- A date is fixed, with a fallback in case the weather turns.
- The roof is photographed from the air, with the camera kept on your property.
- If the loft can be reached safely, it is checked too.
- Everything is written up, with the aerial photos and our advice.
How to prepare
- Agree roof access with the managing agent if it’s shared
- Make sure we can get to the back of the property
- If you’re buying, let the agent know when we are coming

Related advice
Should I look at the roof myself first?
If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.
After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Don’t go up yourself.

Airspace, weather and Boxmoor roofs
Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first, including zones around airports and prisons. Boxmoor is part of Hemel Hempstead, one of the post-war new towns. Homes from the post-war decades are common in the new towns, many with low-pitched roofs in concrete tiles and flat-roofed garages or porches. Low pitches and flat-roofed additions are hard to see from the ground, so aerial and thermal views add detail.
For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Boxmoor Primary School, a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit. If you own one of the older houses in the streets near Church of St John the Evangelist and Attached Church Hall, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where aerial photos and thermal images help.

For landlords and managing agents
If you own several properties, surveys can be booked for more than one address. To arrange surveys for several addresses, call 07833 053749 or drop us an email with the addresses.
We also survey roofs for businesses and commercial landlords. Bigger roofs take more time, so they’re priced to suit.
Different roofs, different checks
Steep slate and tile slopes
Steep roofs are risky to walk on. From the air, every course of slates or tiles can be seen.
Large commercial roofs
Large commercial roofs cover a lot of ground. A drone photographs the whole surface methodically, so nothing is skipped.

Questions from Boxmoor
Are there drone restrictions around Boxmoor?
It depends on the exact address and the weather on the day. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. A small drone can’t fly safely in high wind or heavy rain.
Is my home in Boxmoor listed or in a conservation area?
Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. It is worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.
Which days do you carry out surveys?
We survey seven days a week: Monday to Friday, Saturdays and Sundays. Let us know which days suit you when you book.
Do you take photos of the roof?
Yes, every report has them. Each finding is shown in a picture where possible, which makes the report easy to follow.
Will you check the loft?
Where it is relevant to the survey and there is safe access, yes. A clear path to the hatch helps.
Is it the same as a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey?
No. We check the roof, not the whole building, so it is not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey. It can sit alongside a RICS survey if you want both.
How much does a drone roof survey cost in Boxmoor?
Our price is from £400, including VAT. What you pay for your roof depends on its size, height, access and the package, confirmed before anything is booked.
