Chimney Survey in Bury
A survey of chimney stacks, pots, flashings and flaunching around Bury, with findings in writing and pictures to back them up. Weekday and weekend visits available.
- Gaps in the mortar around the pots
- Mortar washing out of the joints
- A stack that appears to lean
Chimney survey in Bury
Our survey covers the structure of the stack and its weathering details. It is not a flue inspection, a chimney sweep or a gas safety inspection. For the flue itself, you’ll need a sweep or, for gas appliances, a Gas Safe registered engineer. We’ll tell you if we see anything that suggests they should take a look. If you are worried about cracked or missing flaunching and a stack that appears to lean, we can find out what’s behind it.
In a village or hamlet like Bury, older cottages and farmhouses often sit alongside barns, outbuildings and a few newer houses. Older roofs may be clay tile, slate, stone or thatch, often with chimneys that have stood a long time. We report on everything that’s safely in view, and thatch is a specialist material. On older roofs, it’s typically the chimneys and lead flashings that need work first.
The written findings come by email, easy to pass on to a roofer, an agent or an insurer. Basic reports come within 48 hours, Standard within 24–48 hours and Premium on the day.

FAQs for Bury
I let a flat near Amberley station. Can you check the roof?
Of course. Let us know whether a tenant or an agent will let us in, and the report can go straight to you or your agent.
Do you cover smaller places like Bury?
Yes. Bury is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We work right across London and the South East. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when booking.
Can you tell me if my roof has asbestos?
No. We don’t sample or test for asbestos. Where a material might contain it, such as old cement sheets on a building from before 2000, the report flags it, with a recommendation to have a specialist asbestos surveyor check before it’s disturbed.
Does someone need to be in?
If the survey includes the loft or the inside of the building, someone needs to let us in. Access is agreed with you when you book.
When does the report arrive?
Report times are set by the package. Basic is within 48 hours, Standard is 24–48 hours and Premium is the same day. Mention any deadline when you book.
Does the report include photos?
Yes. The report includes photos of what we found, so you can see exactly what each finding refers to.
Does the weather affect the survey?
A survey can normally go ahead in light rain. Heavy rain or strong wind can ground a drone and make the roof unsafe, so we will agree a new date if the weather isn’t suitable.
How the survey works
Every roof is different, but as a rough guide the survey takes about 1–2 hours for most houses, while a commercial roof takes nearer three to four hours. If you have questions on the day, just ask. Somewhere as small as Bury, access is frequently the only tricky part. Mention any outbuildings, barns or garages you want included, and anything about the roof you already know. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays.
- You let us know whether any stacks are shared, unused or leaning.
- We check the roof around each stack, including the flashings.
- The top of each stack is checked for cracked flaunching and loose pots.
- Any lean, spalling or worn pointing is recorded.
- You receive a written report setting out what needs attention first.
Before the survey
- If it isn’t your property yet, arrange access through the agent
- Find any records of previous roof work
- Leave a clear route to the loft

Advice
Checking the roof from ground level
Look up at the roof after a storm, from the ground: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Do not go up yourself.
During heavy rain, look at the gutters from the ground or a window. Water spilling over the edge can point to a blockage or a sagging run.
Bury homes and their roofs
Older houses across Sussex often have handmade clay tiles, and many have tile-hanging on their upper walls. A few old Sussex buildings still carry heavy Horsham stone slabs. Whatever the covering, it is often the fixings, flashings, valleys and gutters that give out first. With Bignor Roman Villa about 1.7 miles north-west, Bury sits in an area with a long building history. Older homes in the wider area frequently have features worth a closer look, such as lead valleys, tall stacks and roofs that have been patched over the years, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first.
For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Bury CofE Primary School, its roofs, gutters and any chimneys need the same checks as a house’s, just on a bigger scale. If you own a rental within reach of Amberley station, a roof report helps you deal with small faults before they turn into a call from a tenant. If you live in an older home near The Parish Church of St John the Evangelist, old fixings, lead flashings and tall chimneys are typical of older roofs.

What this survey can’t tell you
It is a careful look at the chimney stack, not the whole story. Its limits include:
- Whether a stack needs rebuilding on structural grounds
- Gas safety checks, which need a Gas Safe registered engineer
- Hidden damage within the stack
If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll recommend the right survey before booking. What a survey covers and does not.
What this survey covers
- Chimney breasts
- Flaunching
- Lead flashings
- Chimney pots and cowls
- Shared and party-wall stacks
- Brick chimney stacks
What happens if roof problems are left?
A leaning stack should be looked at sooner rather than later. We record its condition and recommend a structural engineer where needed, so you know where you stand. Outbuildings and barns around Bury are easy to forget, but a failed roof there can spoil what’s stored inside. A quick look before winter can save a lot.

Before and after the survey
Nothing here needs a ladder. A few suggestions:
- Keep the report to compare against at the next survey
- Check that disused chimneys can still breathe
- Keep track of stains on chimney breasts
- Use a Gas Safe registered engineer for gas appliances
If anything in the report is not clear, just ask us. The Standard Survey includes a follow-up consultation and the Premium Survey an in-person consultation.
Keep an eye on chimney breasts for new damp patches. Early signs are easier to trace.
