Flying and imaging in Sandwich
Sandwich is within about 3 miles of the coast, and wind near the sea can be strong. The weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead, as a small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or a downpour. We fly a sub-250g drone and are a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID). Flights in the open category stay under 120 m (400 ft), with the drone kept in sight.
If you run a hotel or guest house in or near Sandwich, a roof problem can mean rooms out of use, so it pays to find faults before guests do. Take a building like Sandwich Infant School: thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof. For an older house near a landmark like Sandwich United Reformed Church, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where close-up aerial shots and thermal images help.
Sandwich is about 5 miles north-west of Deal, in Kent. If you are in Sandwich, booking works exactly as it does anywhere else: a call or an email, a price, then a date. Sandwich is one of the places in Kent we cover. You can also see our page for Canterbury.

How a drone roof survey works in Sandwich
Neighbours’ privacy matters on every flight. The camera stays on your roof, not on neighbouring homes and gardens. If your roof is shared, a word with next door beforehand helps. We inspect only what the owner has asked us to. Flights are kept as short as the job allows and focused on the roof in question. Typical surveys look at flat roofs on upper floors that hold water and slipped or missing slates on a high roof, across valleys and parapet gutters, large and complex roofs and tall and steep roofs.
Places like Sandwich can be near small airfields or other airspace restrictions, so every drone flight starts with a check of the Drone Safety Map. Open ground can mean stronger wind, which also affects whether a small drone can fly. Neighbours’ privacy is part of planning each flight, along with the airspace and the weather.
Pictures do a lot of the work in our reports, so you can see each defect rather than just read about it. Anything out of sight on the day is listed as such.

What a drone roof survey does not cover
We only report everything that’s safely in view on the day, so some things are outside what a survey can do:
- Flights in strong wind or a downpour
- Anything inside the loft or under the coverings
- A structural engineer’s report
If you are not sure which survey you need, call 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll give you a straight answer. What a survey covers and does not.

Sandwich: your questions answered
Are there drone restrictions around Sandwich?
The answer turns on the exact location and the conditions on the day. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions, including zones around airports and prisons. High wind or heavy rain also stops a small drone flying.
Is my home in Sandwich listed or in a conservation area?
Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.
How fast do I get the report?
Basic reports arrive within 48 hours, Standard reports in 24–48 hours and Premium reports on the same day. All of them come by email, ready to forward.
Is this a RICS survey?
No. We’re experienced roof surveyors, and our survey covers the roof rather than the whole building. If you need a full building survey, you’ll need a RICS survey as well.
What insurance do you have?
We’re covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance, for every survey we carry out.
How much does a drone roof survey cost in Sandwich?
Prices start from £400, including VAT. Our Basic Survey starts from £150, the Standard Survey from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, all including VAT.
Do you climb onto every roof?
Not always. Some roofs are too steep or fragile to walk on safely. We use safe viewpoints, the roof space and a drone where it applies.
Checking the roof from ground level
Look up at the roof after a storm, from ground level: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Don’t go up yourself.
After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Take a photo and write down when you saw it, which helps when we look at the roof.
What we look for on each type of roof
Valleys and parapet gutters
A butterfly roof drains to a central valley gutter. You can’t see it from the street at all, but it’s plain to see from the air.
Steep slate and tile slopes
Widespread slipping on slate typically means nail fatigue. Close-up photos show how widespread it is.
Why get it checked now?
On a tall building, problems are frequently found only when water comes in. By that stage the damage has spread inside. A drone survey finds them sooner. Homes in smaller places like Sandwich can face more weather, so a loose ridge or verge soon lets rain in. Each storm lifts it a little further, and water follows.
Every price we give includes VAT, and the written report is part of the package. Our price is from £400, including VAT. Size, height and access decide where your roof falls.

Tips that help
Getting the most from a drone roof survey starts before we arrive and carries on afterwards. Tips:
- Allow time for permission if you are in a flight restriction zone
- A word with neighbours beforehand helps
- Allow for a change of day in poor weather
- Clear a spot on the drive or lawn
Your report arrives by email, including the close-up photos taken by the drone. Findings are set out in plain English, with recommendations prioritised by urgency where relevant.
Have leaves and moss cleared from gutters, valleys and outlets, especially in autumn. On tall buildings, use a professional with the right access equipment. Many leaks start with a blocked outlet.
The survey, step by step
Photographs are taken throughout the visit, so the report shows exactly what we saw. Close-ups come from the safest viewpoint available, including by drone where it’s applicable and the weather allows. Most surveys take about one to two hours for a house, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. Being in a smaller place like Sandwich doesn’t change how the visit works: we look from the ground, from windows, from the loft and from the roof where it’s safe. It helps to show us anything you’ve already noticed.
- You give us the address so we can check the airspace.
- Where a flight restriction zone or restricted area applies, we seek permission first.
- We assess the wind, the weather and the surroundings before take-off.
- The drone captures close-up photos of the coverings, chimneys, valleys and gutters.
- You receive a written report with photos and recommendations.
Before the survey
