South Mimms Drone Roof Survey
Close-up drone photographs of roofs that are hard to reach for South Mimms, from an experienced roof surveyor. You get a clear written report with photos.
- Tired mortar and pots at the top of a stack
- Slipped or missing slates on a high roof
- Plant growth and moss on the roof
How a drone roof survey works in South Mimms
Every flight starts with an airspace check. Flight restriction zones around airports such as Heathrow, Gatwick and London City need permission from the airport or air traffic control. Central London has restricted areas of its own, which need NATS permission. If permission is not given, we inspect by other means and tell you. Prisons have their own drone restriction zones too. If you are worried about wind damage high on the roof and moss building up on slopes and in gutters, we can find out what’s behind it, on valleys and parapet gutters, large and complex roofs and tall and steep roofs alike.
Somewhere as small as South Mimms, older roofs are often steep and partly hidden by trees or outbuildings. Close-up drone photos and thermal images help show what cannot be reached safely. Weather and airspace are checked before the visit. Steep slopes and tall chimney stacks are where a close-up view adds the most.
The written findings come by email, easy to pass on to a roofer, an agent or an insurer. Basic reports come within 48 hours, Standard within 24–48 hours and Premium on the day.

South Mimms: your questions answered
Is drone flying allowed in South Mimms?
Typically it comes down to two things: the airspace at the address and the weather. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions, including zones around airports and prisons. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather.
Is my home in South Mimms listed or in a conservation area?
For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.
Will you go up on the roof?
Only when it’s safe. Most of what we need can be seen from safe viewpoints, the loft and, where applicable, a drone, and the report notes anything we couldn’t see.
What do I do with the report?
The report comes by email, and you decide the next step: raise it with a seller, send it to an insurer, brief a roofer or share it with a managing agent.
Does this replace a RICS home survey?
No. We look at the roof, not the whole building, so it’s not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey. Many buyers have both.
Do you need to get into the loft?
If there is a loft and safe access to it, yes. From inside, the underside of the roof often shows damp, staining or daylight that cannot be seen from outside.
How long have you been surveying roofs?
We have more than 20 years’ experience and have completed over 5,000 surveys.
What we look for on each type of roof
Flat roofs on tall buildings
Leaks often start at outlets, edges and around plant. They’re all captured in close-up.
Steep slate and tile slopes
Widespread slipping on slate normally means nail fatigue. We can see the extent of it from above.
The survey, step by step
When we arrive, we begin with a quick chat about the roof and anything that’s worrying you. We then inspect everything that can be seen safely, from ground level, from windows, in the roof space and by drone where it applies. The survey usually takes between one and two hours at a typical home, rising to roughly 3–4 hours on a commercial building. Older roofs in small places like South Mimms can have low, tight loft spaces, so it is useful to know whether there is a loft hatch and how easy it is to reach. We only go where it’s safe.
- First, we check whether a drone is the right tool.
- A visit is booked for a weekday, Saturday or Sunday, weather permitting.
- We fly over the roof, keeping the camera on the property we are surveying.
- If the loft can be reached safely, it is checked too.
- The report sets out what we found, with photos and recommendations.
Preparing for the visit
- For a flat or shared roof, check access with the building owner or managing agent
- Keep pets out of the way during the survey
- If it isn’t your property yet, arrange access through the agent
Getting a price
We confirm the price for your survey before you book, so you know the cost up front. Prices start from £400, including VAT. For a price for your roof, phone 07833 053749 or email us.
Advice
Flying and imaging in South Mimms
Older houses in the South East often have slate or clay tile roofs, while many later estates have concrete tiles. Many roofs like these cannot be judged properly from the pavement, and that’s where a view from above or a thermal image earns its place. Wyllyotts Manor, about 1.6 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around South Mimms. On older houses around here, roofs often carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material.
If you live in an older home near Church of St Giles, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where close-up aerial shots and thermal images help. For site and facilities teams at buildings like St Giles' CofE Primary School, thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof. Shop and office owners around Spires Shopping Centre may find that a commercial roof can be photographed from above without anyone walking on it.

Checking the roof from the ground
You can learn a lot from the ground. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Please do not climb up for a closer look.
Keep a simple record: dates of leaks, photos from the ground and any work done on the roof. Send it with your enquiry, as it helps us focus the survey.
When you need someone else
Every survey has limits, and it is better to know them up front. Bear these in mind:
- Flying in a flight restriction zone without the airport’s permission
- Photos in conditions too poor to fly
- A structural engineer’s report
If you’re not sure which survey you need, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will give you a straight answer before you book. The full list of what we check.

Tips that help
There’s plenty you can do without going near the roof. What helps most:
- Make sure there is room outside for the drone to take off
- Make sure the loft can be reached
- Tell next door if the drone will be near their property
- Tell us about any leaks or concerns
You get an in-person consultation with the Premium Survey to talk through the photographs and findings. You can ask about anything that is not clear.
Have high or hard-to-reach roofs surveyed every few years. Regular photos make changes easy to spot, and early repairs keep water out.
